Freddie Smith has been a major player on Days of Our Lives since 2011, having come on board years ago in the key role of Sonny Kiriakis.

But the actor will be at the center of a landmark event this week on the NBC soap opera, as his character exchanges vows with Guy Wilson’s Will Horton in the first-ever wedding between two men in daytime drama history.

In anticipation of this special ceremony, TV Fanatic contributor Jim Halterman spoke to Smith on behalf of The Backlot and asked for a preview of what's on tap.

"There’s going to be a little drama, but what I loved the best is they really made a beautiful wedding," Smith says. "I remember being so emotional and for some of these speeches just crying my eyes out."

Smith emphasizes that the drama is really just a “backdrop” on the upcoming episode and that the focus of the nuptials is “positive" overall. Don't expect any shockers or twists.

“It’s important to have [this] kind of wedding,” the actor says. “I’m so glad [the writers] had it go smooth.
