Castle Season 5 Report Card: A-

at . Comments

With a long, hot summer looming ahead, TV Fanatic is going back and grading the best - and worst - of the 2012-2013 season.

Having submitted our report cards for The Mentalist Season 5 and Once Upon a Time Season 2, we're taking out our proverbial red pen and moving on. It's time to grade this season of Castle.

Did Kate and Rick's romance work for you? Did the season finale leave you yelling at your TV? Check out our report and then tell us what you thought about Castle Season 5.

Caskett Sighting

Best Episode:  "Still"  Yes, it was a clip show but is was the best damn clip show ever! Watching all of the love, laughs, and drama from all five seasons was a treat. Having Castle stand by Kate even as a the bomb ticked down was a bonus. Finally hearing Beckett tell him she loved him and that they were just beginning…sigh. I'll be rewatching this episode all summer long.

Worst Episode:  "Swan Song" While there were some fans that enjoyed this episode's unique mockumentary style, I felt the entire concept fell flat. Watching Castle and Esposito mugging for the cameras while Beckett and Ryan shyly tried to avoid them worked…for about the first ten minutes. Then it quickly became an annoying gimmick and I found myself wishing it would all be over.

Biggest Improvement:  Caskett. After four long seasons of its audience wishing, hoping, and begging, the show finally made our dynamic duo an official couple.  Nothing was better than watching these two smile at one another over their coffees…while in bed. It's about damn time.

Most Frustrating Moment:  Plenty, I'm afraid. The most annoying thing about this show is that these two incredibly intelligent, likable characters rarely talk to one another.  At times it feels as though every important conversation gets interrupted never to be finished. Like in "After Hours" when Castle begins to address Kate's concerns about them being so different only to be cut off.  And did anyone else have their fingers crossed during "Significant Others" hoping that Kate would find out that Meredith cheated on Castle during their marriage?  It's the missed opportunities on Castle that make me crazy.

Character We Saw in a Whole New Light:  Detective Kevin Ryan. Yes, Ryan has always been adorable and good at his job. We love his bromance with Esposito and his relationship with Jenny, but "The Wild Rover" was a revelation.  Who knew Kevin Ryan could be such a bad ass? In one episode he went from sweet sidekick to an undercover cop with a dangerous streak. Seriously hot!

Character We Need to See More Of:  Dr. Lanie Parsh. It's been five seasons. Why don't we know more about this sassy, sexy lady besides she's Kate's best friend and Esposito's on again/off again booty call?  Lanie Parish is far too dynamic to be kept in the background.

Hopes for 2013:

  • Less Fear:  Or at least have them deal with their fears together. I have loved Kate Beckett since Castle's season one premiere but even I found her frustrating over the last few episodes. Deep down, Kate is afraid that the moment she's all in, Castle will get bored and leave. And Castle has kept things status quo all season because he's terrified that if he pushes for more he'll scare her off. I get it…but that doesn't make it fun to watch.  No matter what the answer is to the proposal at the end of "Watershed" I'm hoping it pushes these two to open up and face their fears…together.
  • More Down Time:  Yes, I know Castle is a crime procedural but to be honest, I don't tune in for the murder of the week. It's the characters that keep me coming back for more and the scenes I love the most are the casual scenes outside of the precinct. Let's see the gang hanging out at the Olde Haunt or another poker game at the loft where Martha can flirt with Esposito.  Those type of scenes from season 1 were huge fun and I miss them.
  • More Romance:  There were some episodes where we didn't even see our favorite couple holding hands and more kisses were cut short than completed.  Thankfully things picked up over the last few episodes and I hope that's a trend going forward. I'm not asking for sex scenes (although I honestly wouldn't complain) but it's the small, intimate moments that make this show and this couple such a joy to watch.

I loved the Science fiction episode. so many in-jokes ( for a trekkie) and the ending was a scream. johnathon frakes as an autograph hunter was a scream as well!

So: Best/Still
Worst/TSTQ (I can't even bring myself to spell it out) Back to Back and Swapped in Sequence Just saying....

Truth be told, I hadn't seen much written about TSTQ and was wondering whether anyone shared my disgust. I only responded to this thread when I saw Swan Song suggested as Worst Episode and felt a need to voice my distaste for that episode. Let's just say I'm glad, I'm not the only one, and I agree with all, and there were things I didn't even write about that I also found distasteful. Thanks for joining the I Hate TSTQ Support Group!! Like I said- not only worst episode of the season, but of the series!!

Tonya, he needs YOU on his team!! On Meredith , Beckett came across as very naive almost stupid. We know Meredith was unfaithful and she is an almost compulsive liar. Surely a detective should have spotted some of that,

Notrampis, I agree that Kate needs to be the one to bring up Castle's marriages. It is no secret that it can be a relationship killer when someone talks too much about their own past relationships. I'm certain that Castle would be happy to tell her anything she wants to know. I was disappointed in Beckett when she stooped to asking Meredith about what happened, knowing how manipulative she could be. And of course, Meredith didn't tell her the truth! I hope Mr. Marlowe does read some of this fan commentary. I wonder if he got a boat load of hate mail after TSTQ? I have not seen one comment anywhere that was good about that episode. It has been universally hated by fans.

wow, I am in agreement with all this as well. Why has Beckett never asked Castle abut his two marriages and why they failed? Marlowe read this thread!!!!!

I agree with the comments of Danny G, Tonya, Rotwang 10 and any others who were disgusted with TSTQ. I have been a fan of Castle since the first show. I endured the occasional angst (2x24 for example) but it fit with the story being told, hard as those angst filled episodes were to watch. I thought the whole final arc this year was poor and I did not like Human Factor and Watershed at all but TSTQ was just offensive to everything I had ever come to believe I knew about the character of Kate Beckett. I don't want to repeat all the criticism noted by all of you. I will just say I agree 100%. I will add that I found her gullibility of what Vaughn was trying to do in that hotel room mind boggling. Also, the whole episode began with a false premise. Police departments are not in the habit of pimping out their female officers. I am sure they would never send a female officer to a hotel room with a male under protection. To me, TSTQ was the very worst of the series by far. I could write a book on this but that is enough.

Tonya, Rotwang 10- I am glad you share my disgust for TSTQ- really, really awful. I actually rewatched it again to make sure I hated it as much as I did. I did. Tonya- I like your list- some are already kind of Castle classics, but I like that you included Undead Again. I only got into Castle a few months ago. I caught it on occasion- not really into it, but when I was away for a long weekend I caught the few episodes ending with The Limey on TNT. I must have seen Always and was very curious to see how that got from The Limey to Always. Undead Again- especially the therapy revelations at the end helped a lot in figuring out that puzzle. That's when I got curious to see how the writers handled the whole relationship start to finish. I really am afan of the writing as much as anything else.

This would have been a great episode to bring out the fact that Meredith cheated on Castle and that this ended their marriage. It would have helped to explain some of Castle's insecurity and lack of trust. Also, why do they allow Castle to forgive Beckett for lying to him AGAIN. I mean kudos to Castle for being the most forgiving man on the planet, but I for one am tired of it. Wow, I better stop myself. That episode just bothered me terribly. It is definitely #1 in the most hated episode list. On the best episode list are #1 Still, #2 tie between Knockdown and Always, #3 Undead Again. The zombie episode was a perfect balance of relationship stuff, Castle goofiness, murder solving, and great supporting staff.

I was also very unhappy with Lanie. She actually tries to get Kate to cheat on Castle with Vaughn!! All that did was make me think that Lanie is a slut. The reduction of Castle to a buffoon man-child was aggravating. I was angry with Gates too. This episode was supposed to come after Still, so Gates knew that Castle and Beckett were together and she allowed it anyway. They should have at least showed Gates praising Castle for solving the murder in record time! A agree that Kate telling Castle, I won't lie to you, just one second after she lied to him about Vaughn stumbling, was crazy. Castle should have replied, "You don't want to lie to me? Seriously Kate, because you just finished lying to me. Why stop now?" He should have walked out on her at this point.

Esposito: So you're going full hipster now.
Ryan: Have you started jarring artisanal pickles yet?
