The Mentalist Review: An Odd Little Town

at . Comments

It was a "Red Letter Day" on The Mentalist, as the oddities spread from the town of Percy, California to Jane's attic. The latter had to do with Agent Bob Kirkland.

Jane's Wild West

Lisbon and Kirkland shared the most uncomfortable cup of coffee I've ever witnessed. What's the opposite of chemistry? Repulsion? Teresa looked as though she couldn't flee the scene fast enough.

Just when I thought Kirkland couldn't get any creepier, he did. As Jane and Lisbon mentioned in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: Don't you think it's odd, Homeland Security's fascination with a California serial killer?
Lisbon: Everything about Bob Kirkland is odd. You can add that to the list. | permalink

But it just got odder. It was no surprise that he had his agents break into Jane's attic to see what he had on Red John... but what was his purpose? Was it to let Red John know what Jane had on him? Is he actually Red John and just admiring Jane's handiwork? I'm really not sure.

Percy, California turned out to be just as odd as the man who owned it. When Hollis snarled at his son that he should have known Julianna was his sister, I could completely understand why he snapped and killed him. What a horrible nightmare.

The best part of the Wild West setting was that it allowed Jane to sharpen his skills and relive a bit of his carnie days. I could only laugh when Jane told Kevin that his magic sucked eggs. It seemed so odd to hear those words come out of the normally more eloquent Patrick Jane.

Another highlight was allowing Rigsby to use his arson skills to crack the case of the cabin fires. It's always nice to be reminded that there is a smart investigator behind that Wayne Rigsby blank stare.

Even better was having Cho call out Rigsby for being dense when it came to Grace.

You're still in love with her but instead of telling her you bought her a plant. | permalink

That about summed it up. Of course the moment Wayne got the nerve to tell her how he felt I knew what was coming. The new boyfriend walked off the elevator.

Do you think Duncan will be another Red John minion? Perhaps the next Jack the Ripper? Married with a secret family? Knowing Grace's luck with love it could be all of the above.

Does Wayne have a chance with Grace? What's your theory on Kirkland's end game? And what will Patrick do now that he knows his fortress of solitude has been compromised? Tell me your theories before the next The Mentalist.

I don't care what else happens on the finale... that crazy harpy had better be dead. This had better be a video tape or a flashback of some type. If she is still alive I am turning my TV off immediately and through with the show forever. They already fooled me once with the fake Red John dying at the end of season 3. If they bring Lorelei back I am through. I need to be able to trust at least some of what I see on my screen. If everything is a lie, what is the point in even trying to figure anything out.

@Entife - just this: "that's so nice of you to say. Thank you, Ana." Like I said, I'm pathetic! I'm inclined to think Lorelei will appear in a flashback or video. I really hope she is dead. I want her to be dead. I don't think poor Lisbon would take much more at this point.

It also makes her more likable. I had a small soft spot for her as a character. Really thought that she had been mistreated by her mom, and that RJ knew that he'd have to destroy Lorelei's joy (reuniting with her sister) to twist her so completely. That cat like turn of her head and her crushed little girl face when she learned the truth, was sympathetic to me. I thought that at some level she was redeemable, that when RJ's control evaporated that good within her would propel her to act. Could be a fantasy wish on my part, though.

And a video would leave the field wide open, too. It always nagged me how pristine Lorelei's coloring when she was laid out dead in the warehouse. Her mascara was still totally intact, not runny or smudging dark circles under her eyes. It gave me a creepy Snow White feel. But I had to believe she was dead. More likely that she is really dead. We don't want the second coming!

That would be a great development, @KM! Perfect! And it saves us the pain and disgruntlement of having Lorelei still around, especially to possibly lure Patrick. Urgh! She could remain really most sincerely dead.

Another possibility is a video recording. What if Lorelei decided during those two weeks that she wanted to give herself some peace, that should she fail at killing RJ herself, then she will have succeeded in betraying him by leaving a video. Not unlike the mom did in "Redemption". Or an audio CD/recording like Billy left Madolyn to stick it to Colin Sullivan in "The Departed". I did not go to Lorelei is alive, but that she left a plan B to be used.

That's terrrific @estatica! What did he say?

My brain's turned to mush at this point. Plus, still trying to avoid fangirling hysterically over the fact that Michael Gaston replied to one of my tweets and used my first name. I'm pathetic.

Thanks for posting that @estatica! Double believable, since he killed Lennon, that Kirkland could have set up Lorelei's fake death to fool Jane, while Kirkland has her in double-secret custody. The question is, what does he gain by keeping Lorelei when he killed Lennon? Each knew who Red John is. Maybe Lorelei is how Kirkland knew who Red John is and so didn't need that info from Lennon. Of course if it's unknown flashback Lorelei, the field's wide open!

omg. Lorelei isn't dead after all? I always had to save back it was a set-up. Just too pat and convenient -- and, run by Kirkland! Although, it could be flashbacks of things she said or did with Patrick that we don't yet know about. That would be her 5th appearance, as we originally thought she would do. Brett Partridge again. Twice this season. hmmmmm *shiver*
