The Mentalist Review: An Odd Little Town

at . Comments

It was a "Red Letter Day" on The Mentalist, as the oddities spread from the town of Percy, California to Jane's attic. The latter had to do with Agent Bob Kirkland.

Jane's Wild West

Lisbon and Kirkland shared the most uncomfortable cup of coffee I've ever witnessed. What's the opposite of chemistry? Repulsion? Teresa looked as though she couldn't flee the scene fast enough.

Just when I thought Kirkland couldn't get any creepier, he did. As Jane and Lisbon mentioned in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: Don't you think it's odd, Homeland Security's fascination with a California serial killer?
Lisbon: Everything about Bob Kirkland is odd. You can add that to the list. | permalink

But it just got odder. It was no surprise that he had his agents break into Jane's attic to see what he had on Red John... but what was his purpose? Was it to let Red John know what Jane had on him? Is he actually Red John and just admiring Jane's handiwork? I'm really not sure.

Percy, California turned out to be just as odd as the man who owned it. When Hollis snarled at his son that he should have known Julianna was his sister, I could completely understand why he snapped and killed him. What a horrible nightmare.

The best part of the Wild West setting was that it allowed Jane to sharpen his skills and relive a bit of his carnie days. I could only laugh when Jane told Kevin that his magic sucked eggs. It seemed so odd to hear those words come out of the normally more eloquent Patrick Jane.

Another highlight was allowing Rigsby to use his arson skills to crack the case of the cabin fires. It's always nice to be reminded that there is a smart investigator behind that Wayne Rigsby blank stare.

Even better was having Cho call out Rigsby for being dense when it came to Grace.

You're still in love with her but instead of telling her you bought her a plant. | permalink

That about summed it up. Of course the moment Wayne got the nerve to tell her how he felt I knew what was coming. The new boyfriend walked off the elevator.

Do you think Duncan will be another Red John minion? Perhaps the next Jack the Ripper? Married with a secret family? Knowing Grace's luck with love it could be all of the above.

Does Wayne have a chance with Grace? What's your theory on Kirkland's end game? And what will Patrick do now that he knows his fortress of solitude has been compromised? Tell me your theories before the next The Mentalist.

our guess for the 7 suspects: Asher Maclean, Judge Manchester ( hubby's pick for red john),Markam Shankar, Gabe Mancini, Walter Mashburn, Ellis Mars (my pick for red john) and Max Winter...

The guy that Theresa Elizabeth is talking right on season 4 he could be Red John ask him what his nic name I think that Patrick Jane should go to the cafe and told tell this guy might be red John he is Robert something he might be red John Patrick Jane should Get some DNA test result if this guy might be red John and ask him what is name is ask him what he nic name and I think that Patrick should watch out for him I think that he might red john he is the one that killed his wife and daughter he should be in jail he should pay what he don to them. Patrick Jane do not kill him I kwon if he is red john

@Feint Gale Bertram and Mashburn are too tall.
Minelli and Cooper are too old. I think Dean Harken, Ray Haffner, Det. Marco Francis...CBI Ron...are possible suspects.

My vote is Ellis Mars... Mars aka "the red planet!?"

A part of me thinks Kirkland is a high up Red John minion while another part of me thinks that he may be doing his own investigation of Red John for personal reasons. Maybe Patrick wasn't the only one burned by Red John and out for revenge

@ Feint,
Interesting idea.

KM: It has a lot to do with how powerful Red John is. The big idea behind the theory is that Red John doesn't do any of his killings himself, but controls a number of minions from a safe place, in this case prison. It's basically a double buff; he alters his style a little(although you could argue the killings in Pilot were real RJ style) to seem like a copycat and gets caught so he can't really be a suspect anymore. Basically that would mean Jane is chasing Red John and he doesn't know he caught him already, making all his efforts worthless. Alternatively, it could turn out to be a story similar to the movie Copycat(1995).

@ Feint,
Wagner is an interesting choice. To be RJ he would have to either 1) have a doppelgänger in prison as he was arrested in 2008, or 2) have escaped prison and his escape has not been mentioned (we know he or his doppelgänger was in prison in season 3), or 3) he commands his minions from death row (if Lisbon has not yet pleaded on his behalf per her deal in "Ball of Fire") or life imprisonment. Options 2 and 3 seem a tad like a copycat of Fox's "The Following", though. I suppose one could argue that The Following, which began in 2013, is a bit of a The Mentlist copycat, in a sincere form of flattery way.

As far as my own list of 7 suspects goes, and I believe they will all be on Jane's final list of 7 too... Gale Bertram
Robert Kirkland
Walter Mashburn
Brett Partridge
Jason Cooper
Linus Wagner
Virgil Minelli The last two will most likely be in the last 10 suspects to be revealed in a week. I'd put my money on Linus Wagner being Red John IF Red John is indeed someone on the list(and if Linus Wagner makes it to the list). I would be very surprised if his list of suspects turned out to be accurate, though...

So we got another 10 suspects a while ago! Week 1: Bret Stiles
Don Henderson
Dean Harken
Asher Maclean
Gale Bertram
Doc Dugan
Judge Manchester
Paul Fricke
Glen (Glennda)Snow
Donny Culpepper Week 2: Markham Shankar
Gabe Mancini
Robert Kirkland
Max Winter
Sheriff Mcallister
Walter Mashburn
Tommy Volker
Brett Partridge
Jason Cooper
Ellis Mars This is some serious stuff, woah. Only Linus Wagner and Virgil Minelli missing and I got all my suspects covered.
