The Mentalist Review: The Ghoul at Sea

by at . Comments

"Red Lacquer Nail Polish" wasn't as much fun as I had hoped it would be. Perhaps my expectations were what left me disappointed.

Investigating an Heiress

The creepy, overgrown mansion had so much potential. Even the security guard seemed freaked out just being there. When Jane slyly told Lisbon, "Ladies first" as they entered the house worthy of a horror movie, I found myself hoping the CBI team would be forced to spend a lot more time there. Unfortunately that didn't happen.

With the entire body burned to ash, the coroner began explaining how a human being can be turned into a fatty wax candle. When he proclaimed, "Isn't that awful" he had a strange but gleeful smile on his face. Jane was right. The guy was a ghoul.

The investigation quickly turned to Elise's nephew. Although he wasn't actually guilty of anything, I disliked Curtis the moment he referred to the men and women at the Soldier's Home as mentally unstable war veterans. He didn't seem to care much for the place which made his turn around at the end hard to swallow.

Lissie Calhoun was the obvious red herring all along as we never got to see her. That almost never happens. If they kept talking about her, I knew she had to have some significance, although I didn't guess that she was the actual burned body until the end.

Jane was lucky he didn't set the whole darn boat on fire when he threw that lit flare into the cabin. Then out popped Elise Vogelson, who turned out to be even odder than anticipated. How could someone who dedicated her life and her family's fortune to helping veterans kill a woman who was a nurse in Vietnam as though she was doing her a favor?

From there, Elise out and out mocked Casey at how easy it was to gain her trust and manipulate her. No wonder this strange woman ended up alone for so much of her life.

With all of its twists and turns, this story never really hooked me. It felt like a bunch of aberrant pieces that never quite fit together.

Cho's attempts to push Rigsby into moving on from Grace were amusing. He certainly knows his partner as he asked Wayne in this The Mentalist quote

 So have you actually made any dates or are you just hesitating and second guessing yourself like you usually do? | permalink

No, Rigsby made the dates. He just didn't show up for any of them. How funny was it that they all looked like Grace?

I'm assuming it won't be long until we see him make another play for VanPelt, but won't that leave them with the same obstacle? CBI rules state that coworkers can't date one another. Unless they're willing to hide the relationship or have one of them transfer, they'll end up right back where they started.

Another favorite revelation was Jane's love of the sea and Lisbon's inability to see the appeal. Lisbon saw nothing romantic about sailing as she told Jane…

 Stuck on that thing in the middle of the ocean. It's like being in a prison cell with a chance of drowning. | permalink

Perhaps these two should stick to the beach.

With a Red John case looming ahead, what did you think of this serial killer-free episode?

The sound on these dvds is very nice. I have a set of Cerwin-Vega speakers, 3-ways with 15-inch woofers, about 3 1/2 feet high. A little old-fashioned these days, I guess, but they can handle anything without giving themselves the shivers. Anyway, nice to have a great audio channel.

@Entwife, you are right, that was a horror show! You know, when I first saw the promo, I actually thought Jane was responsible for that surprise, since I couldn't imagine Rigsby or any other member of the team to have the guts to actually hire a stripper. I assumed he was going to play like in Red Hot, when he announced with a bravado Lisbon and Mashburn as a couple. But I guess he learned his lesson by now and knows how much it stings seeing her with other men. I was a bit disappointed that he didn't remember it was her 10th year anniversary and that he didn't try to surprise her with a pony kind of gift. I suppose is beyond that kind of stuff now, he thinks mainly of Red John these days :/

Oh yes, the ice cream cone scene with the boy is very poignant, @bonaduz, says so much about Patrick Jane. And it's the first time we see how tuned in and wonderful he is with children very touching.

@Entwife
I was refering to 1x02, not the stripper!!!! LOL

@Entwife
I love that scene. Lisbon knows exactly, that Jane wrote this letter - they are his words, his thoughts! And it almost looks like she supports him, when they walk away.
I also like the scene earlier, when Jane is in the Restaurant with the boy, sharing an ice cream with him (Jane seems to like ice cream, btw.), explaining to the boy that everybody dies, but to really feel sorry for one's actions is way worse. "It hurts" Jane says. Jeeesh, makes my heart go out to him!

Yeah, Jane is definitely uncomfortable in the party scene, @estatica. I think the discomfort has distaste, but underlying that seems to be anxiety, very uncomfortable. I don't know about for Jane, but it's the first time we've ever seen the CBI acting like this and it's pretty inappropriate to have a stripper guy humping after your boss like that at what is essentially a bureau gathering. I'd be anxious, too. Jane is the one at her side, sort of fending off the guys he knows and helping her prepare for the Approach of the Humping Stripper (could be a horror show all right). He knows she can handle it, but he quickly takes an opportunity to relieve his anxiety by getting out of there with Cho. That scene is full of stuff.

Hi there @Waseemayob
As far as I know, Rigsby's son Benjamin is fine. Rigsby and what's her name split up and I guess they share custody. He hasn't been mentioned for a while.
Somebody is going to get hurt tonight, yes. We'll have to wait and see who it is.

Avatar

Entwife, have to do that again! hi Wasemayob, I dont think Lisbon will get killed! and if so, not now anyway.
about Risgby's son, nothing happened, not that I know?
If you live in Europe, the episode will be online tomorrow shortly after it has been broadcast in the US but as we are 9 hours ahead, itll be morning for us while it'll still be evening for them.

Guys I'm really worried that Lisbon or someone will die at the end .... The upcoming episode tonight will only be online tomorrow so will watch it. Red John is left handed I seen an episode where he drinks tea with left hand .... I'm really stressed that the director is going to do something we don't like. Kill someone I'm guessing .... Please inform me wat happen to rigsby's son? I can't remember ?
