The Mentalist Review: The Broken Memory Palace

by at . Comments

"Red, White, and Blue" was a standard filler episode for The Mentalist. But an enjoyable one nevertheless.

Jane's Memory Game

The murder investigation highlighted some serious issues facing today's military. The first was sexual harassment against its female members. The ability to file an anonymous claim certainly seemed to have as many drawbacks as advantages. In the end, if no one is willing to officially come forward, then the claim goes nowhere.

I really appreciated that Cho took the lead in this part of the investigation because he's the person on the team with a military background. As he was quick to remind Hawkins in this The Mentalist quote

The next time you ask someone in this unit to watch your back you might want to remember how you watched hers. | permalink

Considering one woman under Hawkins command was killed and another was sexually harassed, it appeared he needed to take a little more responsibility for what was going on in his unit.

The other issue was the number of soldiers coming back with traumatic brain injuries and PTSD. I was amazed by Pete's battle to get through every day.

Of course Jane was the perfect person to go to for anything concerning memory.  I was relieved when Jane finally got around to telling Pete about his memory palace. I felt like I'd waited the entire episode for him to get to that moment.

But Jane was great in several scenes, my favorite of which was when he thanked the soldiers for their service in his own very Patrick Jane way.

The other was when he hypnotized Pete so he could sleep. I loved it when Jane uses his skills for good instead of evil and, even though he tricked Pete, in the end it was for the greater good. Not to mention the poor man finally got some decent sleep.

The killer was such a selfish, arrogant, jackass. He thought slashing some innocent woman's throat was the appropriate response to having to pay alimony to his ex-wife.  Well, that and covering up his illegal prescription drug side business but off course that was his ex's fault too.

The best line of the night went to Rigsby who told the good doctor…

Look on the bright side. In prison you won't have to pay for dates. | permalink

@watcher well now you're being intelligent and practical. where's the fun in that? :D just think it would be crazy and ifun to think about. even if the whole office knows she's thinking about it and in the end asks cho or mashburn. or decides to just freeze eggs leaving everyone guessing who the father might be when she decides to act on them mashburn probably gets extorted all day by women wanting his money. not that teresa would be doing that but he might think differently about her. i'd go cho. don't know if cho would go for it. i had this weird thought that maybe grace would come back and want wayne's sperm but not wayne. she should go for cho i guess. but imagine how pretty the product of jane and grace would be. or cho and lisbon. and meanwhile patrick is saying "what am I chopped liver? i'd take jane because i would want the most beautiful baby he world had ever seen. i don't care what it costs,, how durable, just how stunning.

hey huisclothes, I'm catching up on the comment, don't worry about the make over, take your time well you don't even have to tell me either it's fine. I'm losing weight so hopefully I'll be able to wear more stuff again.

Or avoid the whole awkward in vitro thing altogether and do it the old fashioned way like one of my friends did...have a fling with a cute Australian tourist while on vacation in Greece and keep the baby. No fuss, and you get to enjoy the process.

@huisclothes -I would not ask Jane for sperm if I were her because if he agreed and she had a child immediately, it would become a RJ target (of course, RJ would know Jane is the father.) If she froze embryos to wait until RJ is dead, there would be a very good chance that Jane would be in prison based on how things stand right now. I can't see her implanting embryos knowing Jane is in prison for life and knowing she would have to tell the child that someday. What kind of mother would want to drag her child to visiting day at the prison constantly if they had any choice in the matter? Better to ask Cho or go to a sperm bank. Or better yet, ask Mashburn!!!

ooh-ooh this is my brain foaming at the mouth. what if next season, lisbon decides to become a single mother and asks jane for sperm?

@rationalgal, entwife &km the one thing we haven't seen is lisbon being the proactive one in hunting down red john. she may be starting to connect the dots that until he's gone, she's stuck. it's always been jane's red john situation that has to be resolved. but if she looked at it as teresa's red john situation which has to be resolved or patrick jane can't move on and if patrick can't get on with his life, neither can she -- that changes the paradigm.
both patrick and teresa knows teresa loves him. she doesn't know if patrick loves her but she's never gonna get a real crack at him while rj walks the earth. that would piss me off big time. at this point, at her age, i would, A) freeze some eggs B) hunker down in my own thinking room and see if i could generate some other rj strategies. her mind works differently. she's super motivated. she might crack it or at least get them further along.

Yes, KM, Lisbon definitely is an angry little princess. Actually, she and Jane want the same thing. That was the whole point of the Red Snapper ep. Both Jane and Lisbon showed by the yearning in their eyes when they looked at ex-boyfriend's family that that was what they wanted. Can't have it yet. First have to get rid of RJ. Both know that. Meanwhile Lisbon gets satisfaction taking down bad guys. It makes up for the crap she had to deal with when she was a teenager. Remember the time she ran after one perp, leaped on him, took him down, cuffed him, and said, "Ohhh, that felt GOOD!"

Huisclothes

@entwife that's how i'd feel. i'd want to kill him quick and get on with the hunt for patrick jane.

Because that would be totally awesome!!
