The Mentalist Review: The Alien Lizard Vibe

at . Comments

That nurse wasn't kidding. Agent Kirkland definitely has an alien lizard vibe to him. It's as if we spent "Behind the Red Curtain" waiting for him to rip off his mask and show what he was hiding underneath.

Rigsby is Thrilled

Though Jane has obviously had his suspicions of Kirkland, does he now know he's an agent of Red John? And, if so, can he convince Lisbon?

Kirkland injecting the IV almost made me feel sorry for Jason. The poor guy just woke up from a coma to remember being shot by Lorelei and then had his life snuffed out a moment later. He was still so weak and helpless from his injuries there was nothing he could have done to stop it.

Lisbon was the one who confused me in all of this. She seemed more than happy to hand their one link to Red John over to Kirkland. Was she that worried about her career? Was she actually not suspicious of the creepy federal agent? I was at a loss to the reasoning behind her apparent naivete.

But the best part of the entire episode was Jane enlisting LaRoche to help uncover the scheme of the nonexistent investor. It was awesome watching these two complex, quirky characters work together as Jane cajoled him in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: You spend your days chasing paperclip thieves. When do you ever get the chance to nail a killer? | permalink

If LaRoche isn't Red John (and I hope he's not), I'd love to see him help Patrick take him down and I beg the writers to give us more of these two in the future.

Jane seemed right at home at the theater. I'd guess that actors are a bit similar to carnie folk. They're all putting on some sort of a show.

Jane sitting in the back of the theater listening to Deandra sing was just so him. Lisbon walked right by him and never saw him there.

Deandra's story was downright heartbreaking. That her colleagues gossiped about her drinking while she was really suffering with multiple sclerosis was depressing. That she was reunited with her biological daughter only to have her permanently torn away over a silly financial scheme was tragic.

Lastly, the beautiful Grace Van Pelt was back at the CBI and it's been far too long. Now the question becomes: will Rigsby find the guts to make a play for her?

Were you surprised Kirkland took out Jason? Is Lisbon being naive and do you think Jane now knows that Kirkland works for Red John?

@hc- I disagree. I think if he did know, that plays even better. It makes more of an impact because it shows how far Jane has fallen and how desperate to find RJ he is. If he was willing to knowingly break his 9 year celibacy (I am putting aside any questions I have about whether he slept with Sophie Miller) and sleep with a woman who works for the man his killed his wife and child...WOW! That to me is much more interesting than down and out guy seeks a moment of comfort with a slutty cocktail waitress/hooker.

@rationalgal understand what you're saying. but i'm sticking to my story. jane didn't know. as he said to lisbon in the church, "that's what makes the joke work." in that case, that he really was broke and in a lot of trouble. in this case, he really was needy and lonely and took comfort in the arms of a very forward girl in a town of forward girls looking for a guy. if he's on to her from the start, "it doesn't play nearly as well, does it?" - as jane said in the pilot. i have faith in bruno that showing another layer of the character and making patrick's predicament more unnerving is the way he'd choose to go. imho.

thanks for the trailer!! Red John again, I read that many people are already sick of the story. The writers better come with a good plot for the next season.
One thing is for sure.RJ is after all the people Patrick loves and cares about.....these include Theresa Lisbon. But our dear Theresa will kick RJ's ass for what he did to Bosco!:))))end of story!

@rationalgal. 100%. Even down to the little headshake before he downed the liquor in the airplane bottle in his motel room. Same expressive headshake when he decided to make tea in devil's cherry.

Back with one opinion before watching tonight's TM: Jane was faking his breakdown from start to finish. Got fired deliberately, ran off to Vegas and set himself up as a depressed derelict, knew RJ was tracking him so he acted the part all the way, even in private (drinking that airplane bottle of vodka in his motel room). No doubt took up with a hooker or two (carried condoms) to make his act look good. Waited for a sign from RJ and saw it in Lorelei. She was too interested, he talked in a way to turn off a real hooker, but Lorelei stayed around. When she showed up with soup and said she had bailed him out he knew she was from RJ. Had sex because he had to to be believable. Played it up the next day, and smiled shen Lorelei left. Plan worked! Got back to Lisbon with the happy news. Told her it had all been an act! She was hurt that he hadn't let her in on it. It's all there in the videos.

@watcher yeah i know, i have a friend who thinks he might be just using her. I am more of a happy ending girl though haha

@hc- I don't think it was about keeping score or teaching him a lesson, I think she genuinely thought that not bailing him out was helping him. Clearly, she had tried to reach out many times...he ignored her calls and texts. If he was ready to accept her help, he would have used his one phone call to call her. He didn't. Lisbon took the hint that he still was not ready to accept her help. She knew the best thing to do was let him work through his issues on his own. She would be there when he reached out. It makes no sense to force yourself on somebody who is clearly signaling that they want no contact with you.

yes, not the best moment to leave him alone. she was worried about him for 6 months, she reached out several times and no reply.this is the first she heard of him in a long time. He burns RJ files, runs away, does not return her calls, gets arrested. People change, she probably dint know what to do, hence the smug response when she found out. She had the right to give herself a breather and stop for a second before jumping on a plane and begging him(AGAIN) to let her help him.

@neha- I do believe Jane genuinely cares about Lisbon. But to play devil's advocate, Jane knows nobody else would let him get away with stuff like Lisbon does. If he is using her, it is in his best interests to get her job back and keep her out of jail. Somebody else running the team would rein him in or fire him. And it is his job to help close cases...he should help her with Volker. He is paid to do so and has to do so to keep his place on the team. I don't think anybody thinks he actually dislikes Lisbon. Even if he is using her, he would probably do his best to help her out when he payment for all she does for him, or to keep her hooked if you are really cynical. And people in this camp can point to many things Jane has done to hurt her or cause problems for her...they might say if he really cares about her, why doesn't he treat her better. It can be argued either way.

@neha i can see what you're saying but i don't think it was time for a teaching moment. and i don't think she proved anything by it. i don't think he will take more or less advantage of their bond. it actually has very little to do with him and a lot to do with her. if i loved him, i wouldn't worry about who was keeping score. who won or who lost. who learned their lesson or not. she was worried about him and should have acted accordingly; not prayed for guidance.
