Bones Review: Blood Diamond

by at . Comments

Caroline Julian might be one of the most under-used extra characters on Bones. She's boisterous, witty and always on point. There are at least three squints I would gladly trade to have more of her in my life. Fisher, Daisy, and probably Finn, in case you were wondering.

Even with her googly eyes and suggestive comments to the goofy filmmaker, which I found to be more than slightly silly, I still love her. Can we start a campaign to keep her around?

Aside from just about every aspect of the "let's make a documentary" angle of tonight's episode, "The Blood From the Stones" wasn't terrible. Maybe this means I've finally resigned myself to the stand-alone format the series has adopted on Bones Season 8.

The Diamond Connection

Besides Caroline Julian, here's what worked about tonight's case:

It allowed Booth to be Booth.

Booth started the case willing to give the deceased the benefit of the doubt, but as the evidence began to pile up against him, Booth could no longer defend the man as good, despite the reassurances from the commanding officer that the deceased hadn't been a bad cop. Where the evidence leads, Booth goes. As it happened, the evidence led him to the victim's wife, the woman for whom he had planned to smuggle the diamonds.

Booth is a moral guy. Cops are good guys. Bad guys are, well, bad guys. And because he's so moral when it comes to good and bad, bad cops are among the worst offenders in the land. In his mind one bad cop spoils the bunch. They all become untrustworthy and their reputations are all sullied when a good cop goes bad. Even if the good cop goes bad for love.

I like Booth and I liked seeing him work tonight's case more than I've liked watching him work many of the cases this season. He wasn't campy or cheesy. He didn't have to play a silly role or go into the lab like a squint.

Booth got to be an agent and do his job well.

Similarly, what also worked was that Brennan had a moment of clarity regarding her personality, and it wasn't an easy revelation to have.

The board of directors brought Clark in to temper Brennan's harsh and critical nature for their documentary, which forced her to introspection and the realization that she comes across as cold and unfeeling. Mean, even. This particular revelation reminded me of the episode where she was testifying in court and she was told they would lose the case because of her lack of emotional connection to her testimony.

There are times when Brennan looks inward and sees herself as others see her and from there she grows as a character. Tonight was one of them and it was a good moment for Brennan.

Another good moment, one that I thoroughly enjoyed despite its being used as the promo for this episode, was watching Booth and Brennan at the diamond dealer's store. Dancing around the question of what they are to one another was fun and a bit sly.

Booth is more than her boyfriend, but not her fiance'. Brennan doesn't believe in the institution of marriage but struggles to define their relationship.

Bones: [to jeweler] We have a deal that he will never ask me to marry him. And when the time comes to marry, which I do not foresee, he believes that I will ask him. | permalink

There was something glimmering in Booth's face during that exchange. He knows that he's right about the two of them. That one day, she'll propose and he'll have been right all along.

Booth is already there and would've married her long ago. He's just waiting for Brennan's head to catch up to her heart.

What did you think of "The Blood in the Stones"? Which squint would you trade for Caroline, if any? Do you think Booth and Brennan will head to the altar before Bones ends?

*I've maintained since the first season that Brennan has been consistently honest and the character with the most integrity on the show. and this cannot be said about anyone else on the show. Everyone from Booth to the squinterns regularly make fun of her and take personal and hurtful jabs at her while I can't recall her ever doing so to any one, intentionally. She's the best in her field and the squint squad are there BECAUSE of her. Remember when she left and they disbanded? Like the reviewer in GMMR said, this putting down Brennan has become a trend lately and needs to stop. And yes, more Caroline please. I'll give you Finn, Sweets, Clark and the new weirdo guy for her and yes, Arastoo too, now that he's with Cam. I like Fisher and this season's Daisy and of course, VNM, though Zack will always have a special place. I do like these standalone episodes, which seems to be the hallmark of Bones now. I'm guessing we're going to get more of these until they try to stuff as many cliffhangers as they can into the finale and leave us hanging till next season.

Good episode and I loved the B&B interaction. I felt like giving myself a high-five and yelling 'they're back, baby!' after the last scene, but restrained myself because knowing this show, it'll only be short lived. Old school Booth kicking down the door, hustling Brennan out of her office only that they kiss now too, Hodgins' King of the Lab!, Sweet only appears once, ONCE!, Brennan wearing her old Rolex!! All of it gave me flashbacks to the good old days when Bones was excellent. I liked this episode. Yes, we all already know that Booth is 'perfect', move on already HH! I don't think that Brennan's introspection was a good thing. I felt that once again Brennan is shown as someone that everyone just tolerates and that there's another aspect of her that just isn't 'normal'. Giving her these ridiculous fits of jealousy with Clark (it's getting old now) and having total strangers make fun of her while her own team laughs behind her back is what's cruel and mean. I've maintained since the first season that Brennan has been the most consistently honest and the character with the most integrity on the show. Everyone from Booth to the squinterns regularly make fun of her and take personal and hurtful jabs at her while I can't recall her ever doing so to any one. Well, Debbiestan, if you could spell, I might attach more credence to your comments. I enjoyed this episode greatly! Loved Caroline's scenestealing moments as always! I could lose Fisher, Arastoo and Daisy in favor of more of Caroline any day! This filmmaker is not someone I would necessarily see for Caroline, but their interchanges were quite entertaining. And the scene in the jeweler's was truly a delicate little dance. Loved Brennan's discomfort and Booth's little grin over her discomforture. I agree that Booth would have gladly married her long ago. That man has to be the most patient wooer on the face of the planet! His sweet comforting of Brennan at the end was so like Booth. When she starts to doubt herself and her worthiness to be loved, he is always there to reassure her of his love. He's such a great guy! And I always love seeing his FBI Booth moments as the sharp investigator and man of action.

I love Caroline too, and greatly enjoyed Vincent Nigel-Murray! If I worked there and weren't married, I'd have a *massive* crush on him! I hope Brennan keeps seeing how cold she is.

I love Caroline, and wish she was in the show more! I would gladly give up Daisy, or Fisher for her to be in it more! Loved the scene in the jewelery store and seeing Brennan get flustered by all the questions from the jeweler was awesome..I think before the series ends we'll see a B&B wedding.. but I don't think that will be for a while

I really enjoyed this episode-the case was interesting and I didn't suspect the wife as being the murderer. Many humoruos momemnts too- from the documentary being filmed at the Jeffersonian (and everyone's reactions to this "intrusion") to Caroline and Jursic making "goo goo eyes" at each other. Totally loved Booth and his tough huy persona when questioning suspects and Brennan kissing him at the crime scene and saying she loved him-wow! Loved the ending scene with B&B! Can't understand why one poster said it was the worst ep ever-were we watching the same show? Obvi not!

Caroline Julia has been my favorite tv lawyer since the end of Perry Mason.

I liked the episode. The case was interesting and B&B acted like a couple. Good show.
