The Vampire Diaries Review: A Dirty Rotten Shane

by at . Comments

Sorry, Damon Salvatore. You may have a handsome behind, but you are one giant liar.

To conclude last week's strong Vampire Diaries episode, you uttered these inspiring words: Here we go. But the show didn't go very far at all on "Into the Wild," burying itself in far too much drivel from Atticus - yes, Atticus! - Shane and dragging the hour down with an over-reliance on exposition.

Yes, we learned a great deal.

About why Shane manipulated the Pastor to commit group suicide. About what his end game is for The Cure. About Bonnie's relationship to a witch with a really complicated name. But if Shane's history classes are anything like the way this information was doled out - talking, talking and then even more talking - I can't imagine why anyone would sign up.

Shane on the Island

This was really one of the more boring episodes of The Vampire Diaries in recent memory, which is slightly understandable because it clearly served as a transition to next week's official introduction of a new hunter and what hopefully will be a final showdown between Shane and, well... everyone else.

But, for all the answers given, the installment really didn't accomplish much at all.

Is anyone surprised that Shane has an ulterior, evil motive? Anyone taken aback that he was training Bonnie for his own nefarious purposes? We were clearly headed here all along. I doubt many viewers thought Shane was simply a well-meaning father figure who would bring out the best in our resident witch.

The Elena-Damon divide over taking The Cure has grown old, as well. My feelings on the sire bond nonsense have been made clear over the course of The Vampire Diaries Season 4 (spoiler alert: I don't like it!) and it's tiresome to watch these two continually debate whether her feelings are real.

Moreover, what do they/we even know about The Cure? Is it an injection? Are there gallons' worth? Can one vampire take it? Two? Three dozen? The group would have been better served if they stopped discussing the pros and cons of taking it - and instead focused on the shady dude who promised it could be found.

Know how else the group would have been better served? If it stopped splitting up! Sheesh! Do these people not watch any horror movies?

Back in Mystic Falls, meanwhile, we had a Tyler and Caroline sighting for the first time in three weeks. But the return wasn't welcome for this couple, as Caroline quickly suffered a bite at the mouth of her occasional, quasi paramour.

Now, I adore these characters. And I love the actors portraying them. But it's unclear what point this mini storyline served. We should all understand Klaus by now: he's cruel, but he also possesses a softer, vulnerable side and it stems from how he's been hurt in the past and... yadda, yadda, yadda. Caroline calling on his humanity in order to be saved was really just pointing out the obvious.

Maybe his love for C -Money has now been solidified? Perhaps he'll really try to fight for her heart now? But it's hard to see how much mileage that angle would get, considering Caroline also called him out for killing Jenna and Tyler's mother, among many other victims. She ain't falling for his serial-killer-with-a-wounded-heart-of-gold act.

So we're left with a wasted trip into the wild. There was far too much telling and not nearly enough showing this week. I watch The Vampire Diaries for the occasional heart-to-heart, sure, but not to watch one guy just spout his history for minutes on end. The pressure is now on, new hunter dude.

You better bring it next Thursday night. What did everyone else think?

Who knows when the cure will be found and how much of it there will be to fix any vampires out but I mostly want the show to run normal again once it's found because these crazy random couples feel completely out of whack. ;P

Did I miss something? When and how did Shane get out of jail?

I hated last week's episode too. Most of it was a waste of time and even the heart to heart moments between the characters were boring and they were repeating things. What's annoying too is how they all just assume that everyone can take the cure like it's a fountain with never ending stuff.
Even the Delena moments were not as breathtaking as usual.
By the way I'm totally a Delena fan but I don't see Damon as the innocent guy who does nothing wrong in fact all the wrong things he does in the moments where his fierce passion takes over and he kills someone or when he pulls someone's heart out from their chest with an astonishing coldness. These are the things that make him interesting and exciting. We as regular people are always aware of morals and we would never be with someone like that in real life but that's why they made TV and that's why people call it a guilty pleasure because we live out our immoral fantasies by watching and imagining ourselves inside these stories loving someone who kills with an ice cold heart and loves with a burning passion.

honestly, the only reason i watch this show anymore is for klaus and caroline. the damon-elena-stefan love triangle is really getting on my nerves. at this point, i could care less about who she ends up with.

I finally got around to watching season 4 and I wouldn't care less about damon and Elena, they crossed a line and all because stefan left to save his stupid brother from the werewolf bite. Pls keep Elena away from stefan, he made his fans proud this past 2 episodes, pls get over Elena,I like him around rebecca, she has grown. How can they just kill kol and all his innocent blood line(felt sad for the originals) , Elena should stop pretending, she is no worse than any of d originals. Caroline and klaus I like.

One of the most boring, flawed, incorrigible episodes to date. The characters were intensely boring, aggravating and pointless, truth be told.
The actors delivered as if all of them are children saying "This is mine, this is yours, go away or I want it." Intensely poor dialogue. Everything just gave off the steam of horrible writing, plot and environment.
It looks like the ideas department for a decent, well written plot is unforeseeable with this show.

Queenbee94

Julie Plec has obviously watched too many LOST reruns... Seriously people!!! A deserted island, magic caves, traps in the jungle, "others" trying to kill the protagonists, mysterious whispers, flashbacks, and don't forget Ian Somerhalder's lovely behind. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Silas turns into black smoke next episode...

@Amie. I know you're right, but I just wanted to get my two cents in. The thing is that I'm not trying to hate on Damon, but simply call it what it is and that's something that some of DE shippers can't or should I say will not acknowledge because they are so star eyed over Damon, not Elena, but Damon. It's rather sickening.

Matt I agree, where the hell did they hear that they would all be taking the cure, huh ?! Seriously ! And Caroline and Tyler, bringing them back for this...stunt ! WTF !!!! Oh and if they put blood in the well, who are gonna see ? Jenna, Alaric? I miss them...BUT enough with ghosts... I so knew they were coming back, ghosts...

the episode was just crap> after such a great one the week before, to deliver this total failure, nah, I don't even know what to say... I still had question even before the half of the episode came.... I hope next week's gonna be better than that ! The only spark was the hunter at the end...
