The Mentalist Review: Poker Anyone?

at . Comments

There seems to be a poker theme in The Mentalist season 5 - and "Red in Tooth and Claw" kept it going. With this many bluffs and turns, who needs Red John... or is it all just a metaphor for the game the infamous serial killer has been playing with Patrick Jane?

There were so many wonderfully funny and mildly flirty moments tonight that I hope I remember them all.

Rigsby's Class Trip

First, who would have guessed that Lisbon would pass out over flesh eating bugs? She's probably witnessed hundreds of dead bodies in various stages of decomposition but the bugs were particularly gross. The best part was the Patrick went to catch her as she fell. I don't think he even saw that one coming.

Jane did a great job of dissecting the subconscious of the scientists based on what they chose to study. As he told the doctor in one of many great The Mentalist quotes

Nobody picks what they dedicate their life to by accident. It says something. | permalink

From the dark thoughts of primates to the tenaciousness of the woodpecker to... moths? Deciding to spend your life studying moths should have been a dead giveaway but then again I've always been annoyed by those particular flying creatures.

Paul killed LInda over a moth. Yes, I know it was about his career and losing his job and blah, blah, blah, but he stabbed a women in the neck to steal her moth! That's simply pathetic.

Linda's colleagues were all out for themselves. Megan enjoyed watching her pain, Paul was insanely jealous of her success and Sonya was only happy about Linda's successes because she felt it made her look good. Linda worked with some really horrific human beings.

I've always loved it when Jane visits his memory palace and this was no exception. It's one of those quirky Janeisms that I've grown to enjoy.

I also loved that Jane brought everyone gifts from the museum shop, but did he bring something back for Lisbon? The gifts sparked one of the funniest conversations between Rigsby and Cho that we've ever witnessed.

Rigsby: How can you like Triceratops more than T-Rex?
Cho: T-Rex are losers. Little arms. It's chicken with teeth. | permalink

And it only got better with Cho calling out Rigsby on his feelings for Grace. Cowards don't get to say goodbye when they want. If Rigsby wants the girl it's time to man up. Of course the best he could do in that moment was watch Cho walk away and mutter…

Rigsby: You date pregnant hookers and your dinosaur eats grass. | permalink

I couldn't stop laughing.

Even with all of that, the best was yet to come. I found it ironic that Jane put on his white hat and rode to the rescue to get Bertram to authorize the funding for Grace's White Hat training. He's always had a soft spot for her.

Then Jane used his wedding ring to ward off the doctor's advances and it's not the first time he's done that. I suppose keeping that ring on comes in handy from time to time.

Of course, the best scene of the night was having Jane challenge Lisbon to some poker using gummy dinosaurs. Any fans of Castle would remember a similar scene from season one, but it's taken Jane and Lisbon to season five to get to that level of flirting although it makes it no less fun to watch.

Here's to more funny, flirty episodes of The Mentalist in our near future.

@entwife. i think patrick hallucinated a strait jacket because they had indeed strapped him down with leather straps while they pumped his stomach. perhaps he wore a strait jacket when he was institutionalized but it just could have been an image he generated since he obviously thought there was something very wrong about seeing charlotte. he turned cho into a sort of madhouse warden. he thought he or the world was crazy so he put himself in a strait jacket or maybe thought that the evil cho had strapped him in.

@km best sentence i've seen in a long time? gnomes were visible from the street. just tickles me. great title for an autobiography (mine, maybe): gnomes were visible from the street.

Thanks, huisclothes. @Entwife,
Gnomes were visible from the street. Easily seen when Jane parked his car. Any of the team may or may have not noticed them. I notice those things.

@km really enjoyed your comment on paddy.
@rationalgal that's how i saw jane's early exposure to angela. the girl who came around sometimes. wonder what happened to his father? the giant elephant handler in cackle bladder blood said he couldn't believe it, a jane working with the police, so he knew at least the father and maybe there were more janes. the ruskins, at least angie and danny were part of the carnival's daily life.

I just watched Devil's Cherry. Jane's subconscious was telling him he loves Lisbon (that was as clear as anything gets), yet he still misses his family so match he drank poison tea to hallucinate his daughter again. (What a heartbreaking scene!) Also (thru Charlotte) he wants to quit chasing RJ. So he's torn a lot of ways. As for Angela, her grandparents owned the big rides but she didn't hang around the carnival much. Apparently she showed up only occasionally and finally connected with Jane. He was conflicted between his caring nature and the need to make a living as a con artist, the only thing he knew how to do and he loved it, just not where it hurt kids. He has always had a thing about kids. His sleaziness was probably a reflection of his conflict and Angela showed him the way out of it, but not entirely. He was still a sleazy psychic (tho more polished) when his family was murdered.

i've often wondered how early patrick and angela got together. hope he had more girlfriends first. and that she had boyfriends. for both their sakes. i've said this before but it would be interesting if they weren't such a happy couple. fighting, cheating. makes his guilt even greater. what if he finds out, say this week, that she was divorcing him? that'd give us all a nosebleed. i believe at this point, the hunt for rj is about his pride and obsessiveness. doubt he can actually miss them day to day. can miss the idea of them. can miss being happy but it was a long time ago. he can't quit because that would mean he'd wasted his life on this. so he has to keep plowing ahead even if it's just throwing good money after bad. that's why his giving up in red rover was so strange. lisbon was dumbfounded when he said he'd put it behind him. i think he'd be so humiliated. he'd rather die.

Entwife: Stop teasing me with your Devil's Cherry ep. I still have to wait 'til 21.00. It's only 19.30 here (7.30 p.m.)! But I'll watch out for the gnome scene!

He just breaks my heart, his face when Charlotte leaves and his plaintive, But you're coming back? And then at the end, his haunted expression as he drinks the belladonna tea, trying to get his daughter to come back to him. Someone on the original episode link suggested he do marijuana instead. But he's going to stick with what already brought him what he wanted. This has to be resolved, soon!

Now I see why I confounded the straitjacket. He has one on in the hospital hallucination with Charlotte while he's getting his stomach pumped, but when the scene switches back to reality, he's in his vest and shirt. So what made him hallucinate a straitjacket? I'm thinking probably his experience in his hospitalization with Dr. Sophie, although it's not shown then. When we see the two of them talking, it's probably after the crisis and he's out of the jacket. I really can't get how if Jane was on the floor the whole time, Lisbon says when they see the gnomes, You must have hallucinated the couple when you came up this path and saw the gnomes. Huh? Bilocation?

@bonaduz- I know I couldn't do it. I would have moved far away and started a new life. Hannigan was insensitive, but he actually gave Jane good advice in Red Dawn. Luckily, Jane didn't take it - otherwise there would be no show!

The Mentalist Season 5 Episode 14 Quotes

Bertram's suppose to be this real smooth player but he loses a couple of hands of poker and he has to bum everybody else out.
