The Mentalist Review: Poker Anyone?

by at . Comments

There seems to be a poker theme in The Mentalist season 5 - and "Red in Tooth and Claw" kept it going. With this many bluffs and turns, who needs Red John... or is it all just a metaphor for the game the infamous serial killer has been playing with Patrick Jane?

There were so many wonderfully funny and mildly flirty moments tonight that I hope I remember them all.

Rigsby's Class Trip

First, who would have guessed that Lisbon would pass out over flesh eating bugs? She's probably witnessed hundreds of dead bodies in various stages of decomposition but the bugs were particularly gross. The best part was the Patrick went to catch her as she fell. I don't think he even saw that one coming.

Jane did a great job of dissecting the subconscious of the scientists based on what they chose to study. As he told the doctor in one of many great The Mentalist quotes

Nobody picks what they dedicate their life to by accident. It says something. | permalink

From the dark thoughts of primates to the tenaciousness of the woodpecker to... moths? Deciding to spend your life studying moths should have been a dead giveaway but then again I've always been annoyed by those particular flying creatures.

Paul killed LInda over a moth. Yes, I know it was about his career and losing his job and blah, blah, blah, but he stabbed a women in the neck to steal her moth! That's simply pathetic.

Linda's colleagues were all out for themselves. Megan enjoyed watching her pain, Paul was insanely jealous of her success and Sonya was only happy about Linda's successes because she felt it made her look good. Linda worked with some really horrific human beings.

I've always loved it when Jane visits his memory palace and this was no exception. It's one of those quirky Janeisms that I've grown to enjoy.

I also loved that Jane brought everyone gifts from the museum shop, but did he bring something back for Lisbon? The gifts sparked one of the funniest conversations between Rigsby and Cho that we've ever witnessed.

Rigsby: How can you like Triceratops more than T-Rex?
Cho: T-Rex are losers. Little arms. It's chicken with teeth. | permalink

And it only got better with Cho calling out Rigsby on his feelings for Grace. Cowards don't get to say goodbye when they want. If Rigsby wants the girl it's time to man up. Of course the best he could do in that moment was watch Cho walk away and mutter…

Rigsby: You date pregnant hookers and your dinosaur eats grass. | permalink

I couldn't stop laughing.

Even with all of that, the best was yet to come. I found it ironic that Jane put on his white hat and rode to the rescue to get Bertram to authorize the funding for Grace's White Hat training. He's always had a soft spot for her.

Then Jane used his wedding ring to ward off the doctor's advances and it's not the first time he's done that. I suppose keeping that ring on comes in handy from time to time.

Of course, the best scene of the night was having Jane challenge Lisbon to some poker using gummy dinosaurs. Any fans of Castle would remember a similar scene from season one, but it's taken Jane and Lisbon to season five to get to that level of flirting although it makes it no less fun to watch.

Here's to more funny, flirty episodes of The Mentalist in our near future.

@ Huisclothes Thank you for your very concise description of "blueballs"! :-) I get the picture, Entwife! I'm with you, on the "Looney Toons" side. Just don't have enough imagination for all these scenarios. But it's a lot of fun to juggle them all around in my head.
Is Currie Graham (Mashburn) mentioned anywhere in the upcoming eps?

Avatar

Mashburn was definitely on Jane's boiled down list of handshaking suspects. It was the one name that stuck out with me; the others were insignificant in the series. I really think we are on to something here. If Mashburn shows up one more time - OR is mentioned in a small conversation that, yes, Jane had sex with Lorelei but Lisbon had sex with Mashburn. Best part is that one or both realize Mashburn is RJ and get horrified that Lisbon had sex with him unaware. But is that any worse than Jane having sex with RJ's minion? Lots and lots of dramatic possibilities here. Now I'm going to watch the new ep very very closely for more clues. One and a half hours to go!

Looks like @rationalgal and @huisclothes are both homing in on Mashburn as RJ right now. And for the excellent reasons you present. Wish I was good at the whodunit part, but I'm always the Looney Toons character that goes, "That sounds logical." *snicker* @bonaduz-- @huisclothes generalized the term blueballs to include persons of any gender in that condition of frustration. For me, waiting for Jisbon is like that. *sigh*

@bonaduz blueballs is what a guy would describe himself as having when a woman he was dating hadn't as yet agreed to have sex with him. his balls are blue from the tension and discomfort of holding back his sexual passion. also implies the woman is teasing him a bit. at least, according to him. it is a rather coarse phrase.
i'm saying that if rj calls his victims his wives, then angela who was patrick's wife and rj's victim was one of rj's wives.
along with all the other women he killed. including charlotte. yeah entwife. the young psychopaths. shudder.

Yes, I've always thought your Mashburn theory was one of, if not the best RJ theories out there, @huisclothes. And the wives and psychics part is really the clincher on that theory for me. Sure makes a lot more sense than dragging up CBI Ron or dredging Plotnick up again, even if they are Waldo-y, especially Ron. Rope is a terrific film. Totally creepezoid. And the creepy part is not so much there's a dead body in the box but the young psychopaths who think it's a great joke. Monsters in our midst. Other characters may know various things, but what a great kick if we know and suddenly we start seeing who knows what while others are in danger. Be yelling, "Watch out!"

Avatar

@ Huisclothes So, you are saying, that Angela was Mashburn's wife at one point?
And what does "blueballs" mean? I don't know this expression.

Avatar

re: blueballs. wonder how old that expression is? will research. as i described before, it could be good if they declare themselves or do it and then, can't continue for any number of delicious plot conceits. i was thinking about mashburn a zillion pages ago because he identified patrick as a psychic and said one of my wives was into psychics. linus wagner's note in the pilot refers to red john's victims as wives, if this use of the term wife is accurate, (and certainly patrick thought the note sounded like red john) that could easily be angela jane who was very into one particular psychic. `

@entwife glad you like the "we know before they do" scenario. very hitchcock. is it one of the first of his movies, rope, where two young men strangle a guy and put him in a box. they then proceed to throw a party where the two guys and the audience know there's a body in the box? but none of the guests?
patrick knows things before we do. but they're usually revealed to us very quickly. we know stuff lisbon doesn't know. she knows stuff the team doesn't know. does she know stuff jane doesn't know? the truth about hafner, maybe? minelli knows stuff neither lisbon or patrick knows. stiles knows stuff no one knows. he knows stuff only patrick knows. lorelei knows stuff no one but patrick knows. we know the most of anyone.
key to many movies is who knows what when. pillow talk and the apartment are great examples.

Avatar

@bonaduz Wow, you're lucky, 16 minutes. I've got 2 1/2 hours to wait! my little scenarios are mainly threats just now, hahahaha, frustration about being strung along for so long. and @huisclothes wants it to go longer lol!

Avatar

@ Entwife are we ever going to read any or your notes for steamy Jisbon scenarios, or is it strictly 18+? ;-D
