    I think the new mythology is excellent. Dean and Sam are still hunters and always will be, but that doesn't mean they can't use what they've inherited as the last of the Men of Letters, nor that they can't appreciate what their grandfather and their paternal family line was.

    The Men of Letters were basically a group of Bobby's. Guys who did research, but far more in-depth than Bobby ever did, and gathered lore and shared it with a select group of hunters that used that lore to fight monsters. They were a secret society that supported the hunters, even if they looked down on them. Henry explains it all in the episode.

    The actual line in that episode is "Say hey to your old man for me." So it's likely that it was just John's foster/adoptive father.
