Hart of Dixie Review: The Break Up

by at . Comments

We all saw this coming, didn't we?

On "Where I Lead Me," Zoe and Wade broke up. After a dramatic out-of-character (OOC) twist on last week's Hart of Dixie, all of those decisions came to a head and no amount of begging from Wade could save this relationship.

On a lighter note, though, we were given more Wanda and Tom on their wedding day in Bluebell. These two saved the hour for me.

Annabeth & Lemon Arrive

I might as well get the negative out of the way. Here's the gist of what happened: the writers needed a reason to end the Wade and Zoe relationship. Their conclusion? Making Wade OOC by having him sleep with a woman who wasn't Zoe Hart.

This is where my problems begins. In my review last week, I blew up and scorned the writers for doing this. Now that we've reached this far in Hart of Dixie Season 2, it seems like this was the writers intentions all along. Every week has brought a new problem for the couple; the pattern has been obvious and irritating, as they argue over something or hurt each other's feelings and then quickly make up for 10 minutes before another issue arises.

If this was the plan, HoD team, then why did you waste most of this season catering to this couple?!? I will admit that I'm the kind of viewer who watches this happen and says, "it's all apart of their character journey" and continues to enjoy the story. But it's hard for me to wrap my head around the OOC and "dark place" Wade was put in just to break him and Zoe up.

I can't say I'm looking forward to seeing how the bitterness is swept under the rug. It's not like Zoe can forgive him anytime soon and be back with him. If she did, then she'd be OOC.

On to the positive! Debra Jo Rupp was wonderful in this episode! I want her back for more because, honestly, who wouldn't want more of that lovely lady? She also said, "YOLO!" Ha! So come back Kitty!

Speaking of Wanda, her and Tom's wedding was absolutely adorable. What I would have given to have an invite to that event! I would have dressed up as a Droid or something. Nerd heaven! At least love is working out for one couple on Hart of Dixie.

I truly hope we continue to have more Tom and Wanda! Ross Philips and Mallory Moye are underused in the show.

Finally, after OOC Lemon last week, she came to her senses and forgave Annabeth. I spoke to Kaitlyn Black recently and she made a good point: I need to look at it from Lemon's perspective. She said that Annabeth was the most constant thing in Lemon's life and she had been hurt by AB. That's very true and I'm more forgiving of OOC Lemon than I am of OOC Wade now.

It's nice to see that the bond of two friends is strong enough to make it through this. I definitely ship Annabeth and Lemon as best friends forever!

Overall, this episode brought back the funny and picked the show off the floor after last week's disaster. It's time for us Dixie fans to move on and accept the journey the writers are taking us.

(continued) The writers had gold there with Zoe and Wade but now, it's all just a mess and has left viewers unsure about those who call the shots behind the scenes.

Just to add, the honest and strange truth is - I just don't know if all the viewers could get past this extreme character choice (myself included). Yes, it's a TV show but we want to cheer on the people we relate to, or just like. In reality, not all viewers themselves would be swayed to stay, return, or support a guy that cheated on her, or her friend, or relative because that trust in their character is gone. So even the best TV writing can't shake that niggling feeling some viewers will now have. There's also the issue with the writers and trusting that they have your most loved characters in their care. This isn't Game of Thrones where one character you adore can be killed off but never mind because three others have just stolen the limelight with their own storyline. Hart of Dixie is a small cast, a light-hearted show, with simplified storylines. The writers had gold there with Zoe and Wade but now, it's all just a mess and has left viewers unsure about those who call the shots behind the scenes.

I just feel like your comment is spot on Seema. "I just read the comments on another site that mention (and I think ppl might have mentioned this here already too) how Tansy told Zoe in season 1 that it would be "her loss" if she didn't get with Wade. Why would she have come back to bluebell and built up Wade like that if he was really a cheater all along? If she knew about his "car battery" excuse from when they were together, then the season 1 thing didn't make sense. Wade did always seem like while he had vices, he was a man with integrity who rly cared about people in his life (his father, etc.) I'm now officially on the bandwagon of "these writers are terrible" because continuity and character growth seem to be real problems for them to illustrate." !!!!! Whole heartedly agree.

I disagree with the article, I thought Wade cheating was totally in character. He was wild before he started dating Zoe, and he has tried to be a better person for her, but he backslid, which is not terribly surprising.

Thats the thing, the break up is not whats upsetting.
Its the way it happened that has made everyone upset. Why would anyone want Zoe to take Wade back after he has cheated on her? I know I dont.
There are million different ways that Wade could have been made to "grow up" or have a "moment of clarity" but it didnt have to be by having him sleep with another woman.. REALLY? Could he not have wrecked Zoe's car and lost her, drunkenly almost burned down his house, or something just as dramatic but with less "angry fan" ramifications. The couple is now ruined, it will never be the same and I can not root for Zade as a couple again.

I've never commented on this site before but I felt I HAD to because I am so frustrated with the stupid writers who seem to want their own show to end. Very disappointed with this episode and the overall writing in general. It's like they have the ingredients for something great, but the writers ALWAYS go for the laziest option. To me, it seems like the characters often act OOC. If this show doesn't improve soon, I won't continue to watch it.

The break-up needed to happen, as much as it broke my heart to watch i think it will help wade to grow up, he was known as a tom-cat in season one, now he will realise how much he has hurt himself and zoe, remember ross and rachel (friends) that went on for years and they got together in the end, i want the same for zoe & wade, im not so sure wade knew how he felt about zoe and this episode has made him realise how much he really loves her,i will keep waching HoD with the hope that zoe will forgive wade for what happened give him another chance and grow as a couple... wade is the original bad boy he needs zoe to make him the man can be.

No Marisa it did not make the viewers more passionate. It made passionate viewers HATE what the show has done and not want to watch. I now have no reason to watch anymore. It completely ruined the show for us. Its not that Zoe and Wade broke up, its the way they did it. I hope the writers understand they just signed the shows death certificate.

This episode killed me. The scene on the bench with Rachel Bilson and Wilson Bethel was so emotional and well done. I hate that they broke up, but I'm hoping it means Wade will try and win Zoe back in the season finale or something. I still don't know if the cheating was out of character or not: one the one hand, we saw last season when Lavon tried to help Wade get a loan for his bar, he totally self-sabotaged it, which makes this seem more believable. On the other hand, this season we saw him commit to Zoe, plan romantic nights/trips to a cabin for her, and even think about a life with her in NY. There were definitely roots for his indiscretion, but it still seems like a cheap way to make the inevitable Zade breakup come about.
