The Vampire Diaries Review: Compulsive Behavior

On your marks... get set... CURE!

The Vampire Diaries finally returned after a lengthy hiatus this week, airing an "After School Special" that featured the return of Rebekah, harsh truth from Elena, a transformation for Tyler, sides being chosen in a race for the elusive elixir and, unfortunately, a rather lame writing crutch to get everyone there.

Who knew compulsion could make everything so easy?

Questions for Stefan

It was a pleasure to see Claire Holt back in my living room (or as close as she'll ever get to my living room... damn), as Rebekah can always be relied on to bring the perfect combination of pain and pity, revenge and bitterness.

She lashes out because she's lonely, she turns her sorrow into rage. Can you blame her? Considering all she's been through with Klaus as a brother?

Rebekah is a terrific character, but simply locking everyone in the library and forcing the truth out of them was far from a terrific move for the show. Didn't we learn in Writing 101 to show and not tell? It doesn't make for mesmerizing television to have characters sitting around a table, reciting dialogue to move the story forward.

Not to mention how this just adds another chink in the paper thin armor of that whole sire bond thing. Why didn't Damon just have Klaus compel Elena before? If there's a way for her to be forced to come clean about her feelings... why didn't that come up before?

When we left The Vampire Diaries Season 4 in December, Damon ordered Elena away. Fast forward fewer than one episode and now she's certain that she loves him and that's enough for him to invite her back to the cabin for some naked bedroom action (if you know what I mean!). Please, pretty, pretty please with sugar and Bonnie's magic salt on top - can we be done now?

Can Elena and Damon just be together without all this contrived back-and-forth?

Of course, the main takeaway here is that Stefan now knows the truth. But he won't accept the truth. That's why he wants to team up with Rebekah and find that cure in order to turn Elena human again and find out - no, really, truly, seriously find out! - if she's in love with Damon. No wonder Elena feels like a "broken toy," a sad/apt description for how Stefan has been looking at her.

I feel the guy's pain, but it's rather clear at this point: she loves Damon. Move on, Stef. May I recommend the gorgeous blonde blood-sucker standing right in front of you?

Out in the woods, meanwhile... it's AWESOME! Jeremy is jacked, Klaus is turning humans into vampire prey, Matt is wearing a varsity letter jacket. We need to dedicate a lot more time to this storyline (enter The Vampire Diaries promo for next week's episode. Yes!). I'm all in on Jeremy and his mark and Klaus' being a total bad ass and double pepperoni pizza and the idea that some immortal dude named Silas can raise the dead.

This is fun Vampire Diaries lore and mythology, a lot more fun than Elena's oscillating, supposedly sired feelings.

Finally, in the Totally and Completely Random News Department:

  • Bonnie's father has been elected temporary Mayor, even though he's never actually around and has been referenced about three times in four seasons.
  • Kol is back!
  • April is ping-ponging back and forth from Rebekah's secretary to Bonnie's partner in witch crime to town tattle tale. Sorry, Katherine, you're no longer the show's most obvious plot device.

So, yes, The Vampire Diaries is back, but so are some of the problems that have plagued its past few episodes. Still, I maintain hope!

Team Stelena vs. Team Delena has been replaced with Team Rebekah/Stefan vs. Team Klaus/Damon vs. Team Shane/Bonnie. Who will get to the cure first? What will that squad do with it at that time? And who are YOU rooting for, TVD Fanatics?

what i AM happy about though is that we did get a lot of questions answered, it looks like Stefan is finally moving on and damon and elena can go be annoying together.

I didnt mind rebekah torturing the truth out of them, and finding out about what went on.. but seriously ? why are they dragging on this love triangle !! i was hoping elena and stefan would just be at peace with each other at the end, and that he looks to the cure for more selfish reasons.. for himself... i have a feeling hes going to do that, but its taking SO long. Dont like how melodramatic this entire situation is becoming.

Damon deserves some happiness .he has been there for Elena through everything .the reason he didnt leave was because Elena became a vampire and again he wanted to be there for her .he has rescued her and stood by her and was honest with her about Stefan not once but a number of times .he shows again and again how much he only wants the best for Elena .

Nobody wants dames and Elena together that shit is so fucking corney how she going to cheat on Stephen with his own brother

@nelly YEAH to stay and help Elena NOT sleep with her. What kind of scum does that. Also it is immature for Stefan to do that but it also shows how much pain hes going through, its unbearable for him. Honestly you people act like it wouldn't suck to be in love with someone thinking they are the one yet you know they have feelings for your sibling then finds out they slept together. Immature? Yes, but its also painful and an obviously unbearable pain. Whats more immature though is stefan wanting the cure to see how she really feels. Guy needs to move on and writers need to end this triangle.

I loved your posts and I wholeheartedly agree with everything you wrote. OMG the phone call scene was the best scene so far in this season, maybe the best of the whole series. I cried my eyes out, Ian was so great in that scene. The scene, the music by Snow Patrol in the background, I died, it was too much for me to handle. I can't believe that Elena told him that she loves him and that it is the most real thing she has ever felt in her life. I thought we wouldn't get any DE scenes in this episode, I wasn't expecting this at all. It was such a beautiful scene, we had to wait four seasons for this, but it was definitely worth the wait. I'm crying happy tears, Delena will be the death of me;)

Damon wanted to leave town in 4x03 but Stefan told him to stop being dramatic and to stay, according to Stefan the deal they made in 3x22 was off because Elena's transition changed everything. As for Stefan wanting to forget. I feel sorry for Stefan but that's not the way to deal with heartbreak. If you really love someone you will treasure your memories of your time together even if it hurts, because that's all you have left. IMO it's totally immature to want your memories to be erased, it's the easy way out. I can't understand that at all.

@Sunshine you're whole essay was so off. The deal where one brother stays and the other leaves was to both of them. Elena chose Stefan at the time, did Damon leave? F no, seriously watch the show. Also i am MORE than sure Damon has walked away from Elena before on top of all the **** Damon has done to Jeremy and the rest of her friends. What WTF is wrong with Stefan wanting to forget?!?Literally EVERYONE said that Stelena was this epic love but obviously it was only one way and for Stefan to find out is F'ing painful ESPECIALLY when its you're brother. I'm so sick of praising one Salvatore while talking about the other. They are BOTH flawed. Seriously im no Stelena or Delena fan but idiotic posts like that are....idiotic.

Yes! I can't believe Elena finally told Damon she loves him. They are perfect for each other. I just hope her feelings for him are completely real. I'm so happy TVD decided to go there with them so early in the series.

5/ I really loved the scene where Damon shot klaus and said "That's for Carol Lockwood" for two reasons: 1st it was a really beautiful and admirable gesture from Damon's part toward Carol's death knowing that Klaus could rip his heart out within one second but that's Damon when you mess with the people that he cares about, 2nd it showed for the 1000000thtime (even more) how intuitive he is knowing that Klaus is the one who killed her when he wasn't even in MF and how naive Stefan is asking Caroline:"You think he (Klaus) killed her".
