The Vampire Diaries Review: A Lump of Kol

by at . Comments

So THAT's where the saying Kol in your stocking comes from!

On this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, "Catch Me If You Can," this Original blood sucker made his random presence felt, urging Jeremy not to go after the cure; nearly killing Rebekah; and compelling Damon to take out the hunter who could awaken Silas and apparently bring an end to the entire world.

If you believe in scary stories, that is.

Jeremy v. Elena

My overall reaction to the episode? Blah. It wasn't terrible, but it was certainly a letdown after a fast-paced opening few minutes. I don't feel like we ended someplace especially different from where we started.

Let's start with the same complaint I had a week ago: compulsion, schmul-pulsion. This storyline crutch has got to go. It's far too easy to have Originals just compelling their inferior vampires left and right. In this case, granted, it led to a very cool save of Damon by Stefan (you might say he arrived at breakneck speed, eh? Eh?!?), and Damon being locked in the dungeon is at least a twist in the storyline... but can one actually recognize when one is being compelled?

Damon actually warning Jeremy to run while chasing after him was incredibly lame. I'm not sure of the rules of compulsion and I'm not sure if the show is either. The writers just seem to use this whenever it's convenient.

Elsewhere, let me get this straight: Sheriff Forbes went out of her jurisdiction to take Shane in for questioning... then simply let a town citizen interrogate him... because the temporary Mayor (who had never been seen in Mystic Falls before) said it was okay?!?

Yes, we suspend our disbelief when it comes to the overarching idea of supernatural beings on TVD, but is it too much to ask for a realistic, competent police force? My eyes still hurt from rolling so often at the notion of Bonnie playing any role in the questioning of Shane.

Still, like so much on this show, the end result was intriguing: Bonnie Bennett, witch prodigy. Will she use her powers for good or grow into a ticking time bomb of pure evil?

One more complaint before I move on to the positives: Where was Caroline Forbes? Where, Julie Plec?!? What have you done with her and when will we see here again?!?!?!?

A Shady Shane?

As for what I did like about "Catch Me If You Can?"

  • Sarcastic, uncaring Stefan. Correction: I LOVED this. It's a logical step for the character, it's a dynamite portrayal by Paul Wesley and this is one of the best Vampire Diaries quotes of the series: You don't know what I look like when I'm not in love with you.
  • Red. Hot. Strebekah. Sex.
  • The mystery of a new team in the race. As I've written about before, the general through-line of multiple teams competing for the cure is fascinating and enjoyable. It's been bogged down by sire bond nonsense and now an over-reliance on compulsion. But I'm all in on new alliances being built and new relationships being spawned as a result. So... who do you think that suicidal chap in the professor's office was working with?
  • Poor Matt, Least Valuable Player. It's the jacket, dude. You've gotta ditch that jacket.
  • An Elijah mention!

We're left with Bonnie once again flirting with dark magic; Elena actually coming up with a decent plan to off Kol and therefore his bloodline; Damon locked up; and Stefan and Rebekah getting down.

What was your favorite development from the episode? And should we really be trusting Rebekah with that headstone?

2/ I feel sorry for Bonnie and I hope that she get the help to get control on her power before it's too late, plus is professor creepy using hypnosis on her or something? And I’m curious to know who’s the mystery new team in the race for the cure.
3/ I loved Damon/Jeremy/Matt scenes it was really awesome to see Damon protecting the kids : Matt twice, Jeremy multiple times and how he stepped in between Jeremy and Kol as he did with Elena in Klaus' presence. And even that some people says that compulsion is an old method which is true it's also the originals most powerful tool against vampires and humans so why wouldn't they use it to get what they want ?

This was a brilliant crazy awesome episode for me, it's like the plot line get crazy with Bonnie losing control, Damon/Jeremy vs each other, the disagreement or lack of trust between teams members and between teams.
1/ I find Stefan more interesting this way:smart, having fun in two words loosen up which is something he never was with Elena, but I don't love to see him mean and emotionless toward his brother & Elena, even if they're not in good terms for now they still the two most important people for him and even that I understand that he's hurt I can't understand his harsh and childish attitude toward them. Plus I really loved his line: "You don't know what I look like when I'm not in love with you" which is a 100% true, he and Elena never knew or been their true self around each other.

....(the second post)
Elena`s choise. And Damon`s death will be presented like he deserve it (even if they will make us crying allot), no matter his changed by his love for Elena and Elena`s love for him. Love don`t suppose to save the soul ! And they don’t deserve to be together because they are vampire.
- Elena going to madness in the race for cure, because Damon is not with her (to protect her, even by herself) and Stefan will act only for stop her to do bad, bad things just for the 1 reason: Elena don`t must blame him for all that happened after she became vampire (his mistake)
- Elena will became human and don`t remember nothing about love for Stefan or Damon and all that vampire story. The Mystic Fall will be again like at the first time, without all vampire there
- Stefan in the sunset, leaving the Mystic Fall, living a life of vampire as he lived before : without Damon and Elena
- End of TVD by The original `s new TV series with Klaus, Rebekah, Elijah (I don`t know and I don`t care if Kol will be )

Sorry but for me, after 4x11 ep, it`s clear what they (Julie &CO) prepared for us and the TVD :
- Damon & Elena love story will been ending (no more love scene and happiness) by ,,help,, of Stefan (who belive making the right thing for Elena in order to protect her by the sire bond – sick of that, it`s the biggest mistake of TVD - and find the cure for her only because he is felling guilty, not because he loves her), by ,,silence,, of Jeremy (who hate Damon and don’ tell Elena about Damon struggle not kill him, even asking to kill him instead), by ,,nothing to do,, by everyone else of the show (who remember only the bad things of Damon and don’t remember the god things, even he saved the ass of many of them )
- Damon`s death ( by kill or by suicide for Elena`s life) exactly in the moment of true : the cure is find and Elena must became human again (everybody, meaning who is important on the show, want this : Klaus, Stefan, Damon, Jeremy). I know will not be Elena`s choise.

- Stefan in the sunset, leaving the Mystic Fall, living a life of vampire as he lived before : without Damon and Elena
- End of TVD by The original `s new TV series with Klaus, Rebekah, Elijah (I don`t know and I don`t care if Kol will be ) Conclusion : They (Julie &CO) want a new tv serial (The original`s) and don`t give wish to give us more of TVD, they want to finish.
They don’t suppose to be so serious about the story = real life and they forgotten about what suppose to be ,, a fantasy story,,: a story for us where we can`t dream and live a love, a happy ending , a story different from real/hard life .
I `am going to stop watching !!!! PS Sorry for the errors on writing this …I am from Europe (Romania)

P.S.: So Kol is running around SCREAMING that raising Silas and finding the cure is a bad idea and no one seems to pay any heed or wonder, "hey maybe raising a pissed off immortal isn't such a bright idea!" Yeah, that's actually quite bad writing ... "Kol's just a little sissy, don't listen to him, oh wait, he's ready to kill his only sister because of this? Well, he's getting a bit stressed, but don't worry about it."

Everything about Stefan/Elena/Damon triangle: absolutely lame and boring.
Stefan being sarcastic? GREAT! And I love him and Rebekah together, so... YES!!! I also like "the general through-line of multiple teams competing for the cure" very much, but I still have problems with Bonnie (or the actress) and am pretty annoyed by almost all of her scenes. Klaus, Kol, Rebekah and a mentioning of Elijah? Perfect! But WHERE THE HELL WAS CAROLINE? Missed her so much!

This episode was boring mostly, except for Stefan. I definitely don't like him hooking up with Rebekah but if that's what it will take for Elena to realize that she is still in love with him, than that's fine for a little while. I understand Rebekah is Stefan's rebound and all but hopefully he doesn't fall in love with her.
The best part was when Stefan told Elena that Damon tried to kill her brother and she is with him for some reason, so I guess people aren't perfect. The show seems to have lost its core purpose now that Elena and Damon are together and everyone seems to be sleeping with everyone. It seems like a soap opera more than anything else, and really boring. And how does Damon tell Jeremy to run when he's compelled to kill him? That was really stupid and fake.

Whathappened

So Kol is running around SCREAMING that raising Silas and finding the cure is a bad idea and no one seems to pay any heed or wonder, "hey maybe raising a pissed off immortal isn't such a bright idea!"
What is wrong with these people, they've done some dumb stuff but this is retardation!
Does Julie Plec think I'm as dumb as the cast?!
And the motivations for the cure for each character MAKES NO SENSE except for Shane. Leave Elena alone! Let her be a vampire and be done and tell Klaus to FUCK OFF!
If Kol dies I'm done with this show. Julie Plec is a fool if she decides to kill him. He's the only sensible character at this point

Redoktober

There has to be a better way of curing Elena. This is such ridiculous bullshit. Magic has cured EVERYTHING to date on this show and we're just supposed to believe that the ONE thing it can't do is cure a simple little sire bond??? REALLY PLEC? If Elijah is the mystery person then looking at Elijah's character he is the voice of reason in the family. The reasonable thing to do would be to oppose Klaus and side with Kol. He is bound to know more information about the real Silas. Why can't anyone see that raising Silas is NOOOOT a good idea in any sense of the word? Why is EVERYONE looking for this fucking cure anyway if there is even a 1% chance that Silas is this epic badass. What's the plan? Save Elena and watch the rest of the world go to hell in the process. Typical effed up logic from the idiots who have their heads shoved up Elena's golden vajajay. So much for caring about innocents.

It would be really be disappointing if the writers decide to get Stelena back by saying Delena is all about the sire bond. And what Elena feels is just Damon's feelings not hers. The sire bond makes her feel what Damon feels. Kinda like the time Damon was locked up at the Mansion back in season 1 he made Caroline come to the house because he really wanted to get out. So that means the whole time Elena was a vampire she wasn't herself at all.
