The Mentalist Review: Taking It Personally

by at . Comments

"Days of Wine and Roses" was more about Lisbon's hunt for Tommy Volker than the murder of the week, but let's start at the aptly named Oasis Rehabilitation Center.

The place was certainly an oasis, on par with many vacation resorts, offering ample opportunity for Patrick Jane to make mischief.

Jane Sneaks Around

Charlotte (aka Charlie's mother) was blinded to her daughter's addiction. She refused to believe Charlie would steal her ruby necklace. What she failed to realize was that an addict is capable of almost anything. I couldn't help but feel sorry for poor Maria, a character we never even saw on screen, who took the fall for the crime.

Jane playing the klepto was great fun, but it was even better when I realized that Cho and Lisbon were in on the scam.

In the end, I couldn't help but mourn Charlotte. Her death really was a tragedy. She was young and could have turned her life around. But the one person whose job it was to help her was the one who took it all away.

Joanne whined that her disease made her do it. Hopefully she can wallow in that self pity for the rest of her life in a prison cell.

But back to Tommy Volker...

Lisbon personally financed a second autopsy on Amanda Shaw. How much do one of those cost? The guilt over not being able to protect the girl was driving Teresa on a crusade that's as much personal as it is professional.

And Jane noticed.

He knew that the gleam in her eye was either a break in the Volker case or a new lover in her life. I thought it was sweet that he hoped it was love as he said she deserved to find happiness. Jane deserves that too.

But Lisbon would be thrilled with catching Volker and with Grace's help she tracked down his enforcer.

Speaking of Van Pelt, I loved how they hid the actress' pregnancy this week. The rolling cart with file boxes on it was new and kind of ingenious. At least it let her get up from her desk.

Just in case we forgot how creepy Volker was, he decided to visit Lisbon. In addition to his version of charming intimidation techniques he also told Lisbon, "You look good. You've been working out." The way his eyes roamed her body made me want to take a shower.

He was pushing Lisbon's buttons, hoping for a reaction and it was starting to worry Jane as he told her in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: I'm just a little worried he's inside your head and believe me that's not a good road to go down. Bad neighborhood. | permalink

And if anyone should know, it's Patrick Jane.

When it all falls apart, when Lisbon's only connection to Volker is gunned down in the street along with two innocent bystanders, Teresa plays her last card.

She ask Jane for help. Jane vs. Volker. Now this should be fun.

"Is it just me, or does every suspect Cho and Rigsby go to pick up run from them?" You said that at: http://www.tvfanatic.com/2012/... I'm watching episode 11 from season 5 and the photographer Rigsby and Cho were after, didn't run! LOL When I realized that, I had a flash in your note in the review and came just to tell you this! :)

hey! I love reading your comments, damn we'll probably never know!
because if he knew all along then it means he has no feelings for her but if he didn't, he could have feelings for her. I saw an interview of Simon where he explains this, that it's very intriguing for the audience because they wonder if he actually has feelings for her or if he just uses her to get closer to RJ so of course that's what the writer wanted to do. I hope we'll see more of lorelei in soon to see what's up with them.

hi what??? your comment about bio-feedback is fantastic. and the goat remark is a close second. i love patrick and have great faith in his abilities but i don't think he knew about lorelei beforehand. he put up a good fight with all his questions. but ultimately, he put it all aside and succumbed. i think once she dropped the bomb over breakfast, he got back his balance quick. he was prepared to kiss her, marry her, anything her. and yes, he's become more and more attracted to her beyond the red john connection. even before the info about her sister came out.
and since you mention it, i think, by proxy, patrick has slept with red john. that's what red john wanted. lorelei was just a conduit.

Mimi & Huisclothes- Forgot to address this point: I really don't believe Jane would have been unable to perform if he had known who Lorelei was. He would have prepared himself for it and used his famous biofeedback tricks if he needed to. I doubt he would need biofeedback though. The man hadn't had sex in a decade - he probably would have been easily able to perform if she was someone's pet goat. He kissed her in jail when she asked him to. Looked convincing to me. And seemed very attracted to her when he broke her out of prison (even before he found out about her sister which may have made her more sympathetic). The man is prepared to do ANYTHING to get Red John. He would probably sleep with Red John himself if that was the only way to catch him.

Mimi & Huisclothes - Jane had to have known Lorelei was working for Red John the moment she showed up at his motel. He would have to be an idiot not to. He had a 5 minute conversation in a bar...tells her all kinds of really bad stuff about himself including that he killed a man (turns out it was the wrong man) but it is a happy memory for him. He then has to run from guys wanting their money back from his fake psychic reading, almost setting them on fire in the process. She bails him out of jail after all of this. She is a COCKTAIL WAITRESS, they don't make that much money. He was arrested for fraud, drug charges, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer (based on what the forensic woman told Lisbon). Bail had to be at least a few thousand dollars. A cocktail waitress probably wouldn't even have that kind of money, and if she did she wouldn't risk it on a man she spoke to for 5 minutes. If he skipped town, she doesn't get her money back. Would you expect a guy who told you all of that stuff about himself to stick around for his trial? OF COURSE HE KNEW WHO SHE WAS!!!!! I have criticized Jane about many things, but never for being an idiot.

sorry, connection to red john; not concoction.

@mimi. jane was genuinely surprised when lorelei turned out to be red john's emissary. (frankly, had he known, he might have had difficulty performing.) knowing you're having sex at the behest of your worst enemy - not really a turn on. yes, he smiled after she left. because red john had finally taken the bait and reached out. when he told lisbon he'd known all along about lorelei's concoction to red john, he was lying. maybe to soothe lisbon's anxiety about his mental state. maybe to assure lisbon that "no one puts one over on patrick jane." of course, someone did. and jane would have been embarrassed to have lisbon know it. even in the custody hearing for lorelei, when alexa shultz mocked him for having had sex with lorelei, he acted as if it was all part of his grand plan to get red john. he rewrote history to make himself look good, to himself, to the world, to lisbon. sorry, patrick, you've been had.

OK, so what IS it about these shoes? Just varying camera angles? What about those massive white sneakers Jane wore in that weird ep where his shoes were being repaired? What about those big sneakers TV host Karen Cross wore in the Panzer ep? Symbolic? Filling someone's shoes? Walking in someone's shoes? None of the "shoe" sayings I can think of fit anything that's going on. I no longer trust any of these odd things as "clues" - just stuff the writers or directors throw in for their own reasons, maybe just to irritate us.

I don't think Jane knew all along that Lorelei was a RJ minion. He was doing his off-the-rails thing in Las Vegas hoping to smoke out RJ. No doubt he had met several cocktail waitresses in the process. I think he knew Lorelei was RJ's bait when she bailed him out of jail and brought him soup. He no doubt figured that was going pretty far for an ordinary cocktail waitress. So he went along with the sex thing (not entirely unwillingly of course - he IS human) to move the RJ game along. Of course he acted surprise at the RJ revelation, but it was an act as shown by the little smile on his face when Lorelei left.

Either you have a breakthrough in the Volker case or you're in love. Which is it?

I looked Amanda Shaw in the eye and I promised to protect her. I failed.
