Person of Interest Review: Prison Break

by at . Comments

Leave it to Person of Interest to turn a prison break into an all-out chess match complete with multiple players, power shifts and unexpected last second moves.

While we didn't get to see locked and loaded Finch storming Rikers (can you imagine?), the mental battle to reach Reese's eventual, yet short-lived freedom, was just as intriguing for "Prisoner's Dilemma."

Interestingly enough, the actual prisoner, Reese, was in less of a dilemma than Carter, who was stuck playing both sides while trying to reveal/not reveal which one of the four suspects was the "Man in the Suit," all while preventing everyone else from getting to Reese.

Reese in Prison

I was unsure how Carter would handle her questioning and if I would find it believable, but she seemed to handle her own. And, sure, she didn't have to pull some Zero Dark Thirty interrogation tactics, but Carter was able to turn one suspect and work her way to pointing the finger at another.

But rather then see her pull out all her crazy tricks, it was far more interesting listening to Carter and Reese touch on some of the personal moments that impacted them.

It certainly made me wonder what was real and wasn't real as Reese revealed information, but as soon as he began talking about his love and the steps he had taken and one's he hadn't, Carter had the chance to see a whole different side.

Similarly, hearing Carter divulge that she had killed someone was an aspect that we haven't seen before. In a way, it connected her to Reese and added an extra layer of trust between them. I really do enjoy when we get to learn more about the characters.

And as an added layer, Reese became caught up with Bear's former neo-Nazi owner from the Person of Interest Season 2 premiere, the newly friendly (but is he actually reformed?) Elias, and the assassin trying to finish Reese off. I'm surprised there weren't more criminals Reese had put away itching to get at him.

I was curious as to when Elias would drop in, but it was a unique twist turning the former enemy into an ally. I still don't trust the spectacled villain, though. He's bound to rear his evil head again.

It was really no surprise when Reese was finally freed and back in his slick suits, but I didn't see it coming when Donnelly confronted both Reese and Carter. I was sure Reese would make a clean getaway. Which really made me wonder what the outcome of Donnelly's discovery would be, especially with regards to the flashbacks of Reese's dilemma about killing people.

Would Reese be forced to kill Donnelly to keep the secret? Or would Donnelly be convinced that Reese was actually a good guy?

But it was the last second turn that threw in a great final shock with Donnelly's number popping up and Reese's former CIA partner Kara taking him out.

I knew Kara had to come back, as she was in the flashbacks as well, and we hadn't seen her back since "Matsya Nyaya" and the more recent "Masquerade." But what is her real agenda?

I thought she was just out for revenge, so was killing Donnelly necessary to her motives? Either way, she has something up her sleeve and Reese is going to be caught up in her big scheme.

Just when we thought everything was going to be okay for the team.

And while the focus was mainly on Reese, the episode was sure to remind us that the Machine never stops giving Finch numbers, allowing Fusco to take one all by himself. In hilarious fashion, Fusco got caught up saving a supermodel hottie. Starting off with a blinding macing before becoming a hero - wielding duel guns - to getting a kiss and a "call me," definitely gave Fusco the best day out of all of them.

I guess I can see fans of the regular saving the person of interest fare being disappointed, but I love that Person of Interest can keep viewers guessing on what it's going to do. It keeps everything fresh, brings in those past characters and continues to move forward with the larger story. Striking at the heart of Carter and Reese, all while wrapped up in a major battle for the "Man in the Suit," kept the pacing quick and the hour engrossing.

Really, just when you think you have the show pegged, it throws you for a great turn and coming back for more. Hopefully, Fusco can get the supermodel to do the same.

I to was so surprised Reese and Carter would think they were safe. They underestimated Donnelly. But him alone was strange. But he hadn't been working since he arrested the 4 men in suits really with anyone but Carter. I to figured maybe Carter and Reese would convince Donnelly he was good. But surprised he was taking them to a safe house. Finch locked and Loaded was cool, I was going to figure Elias would help spring Reese. Then later want his help again. But between the Aryan Brotherhood group, and the Ghost Assassin. I wondered if Reese would take him in prison. But he told Elias to be careful. Maybe Elias has his people check in to the guy? John will have a show down with the Assassin.
So Kara drove the dump truck? I knew sometime they would get back together. I was kinda surprised, but after Donnelly's number came up it had to be her. But I figured Reese would save him. Carter hopefully will be safe. Maybe Fusco will get there in time to at least make Kara take off. But can she carry John?? Doubt it. Maybe Snow drove truck? And she must have a car or van nearby and not the Dump Truck. Also my son wondered who woman was at beginning who gave info. to Special Council/Pennsylvania Two guy? He wondered if it was Kara. The guy who called the Ghost Assassin who got himself imprisoned? Surprised the Assassin took down former Navy Seal Vincent Holt/Brian Kelly so easily.
Finch may have to get PI Zoe Morgan to help get Reese back. I don't believe Kara is helping him. Then John's "women" will have it out.
Fusco saving Karolina Kurkova was cute. He finally did it on his own. I was hoping he would get to the accident to at least help Carter.
Will be quite interesting when we return to next Episode.

Great show! Can't wait to see what Kara has in store for Reese and what will happen to Carter in the meantime. And I loved the bit with Fusco and that gorgeous thing who tried to beat the crap out of him and then ended up blowing his mind with that big kiss! Fun show! Maybe Kara and the chick who is after Finch can go a round or two!!! Maybe Kara can become Reese's partner. Just thoughts!

WOW! What a fast paced, fun, didn't-see-that-coming episode! The writers and the actors never cease to amaze me. I love the way Harold was going all out to break John out of prison. That would have been fun to watch! I'm dying to see the next episode. Kara might just be after the Machine/Harold. This show and NCIS are the best shows on TV. Keep 'em coming!!

But what is Kara real agenda? She is definitely out for revenge against those who set her up to be killed. She knew that while John had been ordered to kill her (as she was ordered to kill him) there was a fall-back plan with the missile strike that he spotted.

What a wonderful episode, I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time. The ending blew me away, as I wasn't expecting it at all, what does Kara want with Reese? I thought it was a little risky for Reese to show up to meet Carter at the bridge, but I think he thought enough time had gone by that it was safe to thank her. He let his emotions get in the way. I loved all the Carter Reese interactions, especially in the prison.
Great, nail biting episode

My husband and I are huge POI fans. Last night's episode was so full of twists and turns it left out heads spinning. At the end of the episode, we both said, "I didn't see THAT coming!" Was anyone else suspicious of the women who gave the NSA head the file that was about the "man in the suit" at Rickers? I thought it was odd for the cameraman to show her legs like they did - maybe it is Root, maybe I am thinking into it to much. I'm guessing it could have been Kara. I thought she was killed in that flashback (apparently not!), so she could have gone to work for that NSA guy, and the woman might have heard him tell the assassin to take out all 4 of the "man in the suit" suspects. Or I might be overthinking this. I don't think Root is anywhere near the NSA; she's too rogue for that.

I loved this episode. It did not give us a second to catch our breath! From Kara's return to "Dirty Harold" ready to storm the prison to save Reese to Fusco getting the gorgeous model with guns blazing, it was nonstop! Toss in Elias and the Aryan's in prison with Reese and if you blinked, you missed something. Best part was Finch running with Bear to save Reese and the phone/machine rang. Finch stopped only because he realized it could be about the case and realized too late that it was Donnelly who was in danger. What next??? Waiting 2 weeks will be painful!
PS - Kudos to Taraji Henson for her performance!

Grimmfan#10: We knew who you meant by Reboot. Kate: Remember Reese and Carter were both handcuffed. That would limit Carter's activities somewhat, don't you think? However, I'm worried about what Kara will do to her. Also, if she gets away, there's the problem of her arrest by Donnelly. If he filed any reports about why he arrested her, she has that to answer for.
