Castle Review: Exes Come and Go

by at . Comments

Welcome back, Castle fans! In what seems like forever (actual time: one month), our favorite detectives returned for a new episode. "Significant Others” focused on worlds colliding and it was not too pretty. Time to discuss!

The Return of the Ex. Castle’s first wife, Meredith, made an appearance to take care of her sick daughter and crash at Rick’s loft. Was this a good idea? Absolutely not. Especially because that of that whole Caskett thing.

Beckett and Castle Reaction

Two thoughts:

  1. For a mother who was there to take care of her sick child, did we even really see them together? Nope.
  2. Kate Beckett is a much more mature woman that I would have ever been.

Seriously, Beckett deserves a medal. Girlfriend stayed at her man’s house where his ex-wife was staying to take care of his teenage daughter? Awkward!

This scenario led to some hilarious one-liners from the Castle cast. Check them out on the Castle quotes page now!

The bigger deal came in the last few minutes of the hour. After a successful dinner with the former Mrs. Castle, Beckett asked her why their marriage didn’t work out. Her response was that Castle knew everything about her but he didn’t share enough back. It became one-sided and that wasn’t fair. Meredith has a point.

She also mentioned how Rick always reacts to not knowing his father and this made Beckett think. Will things get better or worse for the cutest couple on Monday nights? One thing is for sure: these two have really developed into a comfortable couple and it’s awesome. Thank you, Andrew Marlowe, for going the road less taken on prime time dramas.

Speaking of Divorces...

The weekly case dealt with the death of a divorce lawyer. The normal twists and turns took place and kept you guessing who killed Michelle Twohey. Have to be honest, though. I was much more interested in the personal stories than the cast in this episode. What did you think?

Side Notes...

  • Ryan and Espo continue to be the best bromance in quite some time. The two are hilarious and viewers are pumped on the additional screen time they are receiving.
  • Lanie popped up for a quick second. Not that she needs to get back with Espo, but it would be nice for her to have an arc of her own.
  • How much fun were the soon to be exes in the beginning of the hour smashing all types of things? Crazy, for sure, but definitely fun.
  • Even though the visit from Meredith enhanced and gave more solid ground to Caskett, here is hoping she doesn’t return for quite some time.

Overall, a solid and enjoyable installment. It felt really good to have this group back on our screens after the winter break. What did you think of “Significant Others?” Up to Castle standards or did it fall short? Sound off in the comments and don’t forget to check back for the Castle Round Table later this week.

Until next Monday, TV Fanatics!

I'm surprised Martha didn't let Meredith have it from the beginning. Sure she didn't want Alexis to get upset. It was her mom by the way. But to let her come in and take over kinda. I don't believe Martha Rodgers would just step aside.
Richard coming home to set her(Meredith) straight was funny. I knew he wouldn't do it.
As others have said, Lainey, and Espo, and Ryan trying to give advice was so cute. Castle and Beckett need to know more about each other. Even though I find my wife has more history she won't tell, and we have been together for 30 years. But it's no deal breaker.
The case at hand, The wife (Leanne Piper) changing her name and hiding was a little odd. I didn't see it coming. And the scene with Walter and Samantha Voss destroying the valuables and Them being arrested after Kate warned them.

After the series they would make a good Nick and Nora Charles. Have to get amustash though.

Great episode ... Meredeth was a great addition for a bit but she is way too busy on Scandal to worry about being back here and what a great role she plays there! Caskett will need to evolve and what better way for them to evolve than having to know about his father and for us to learn more about him. Wouldn't it be interesting if it turned out that Castle's father had something to do with Kate's mother's death? Just a thought!

I GUESS THE WRITERS HAD BECKET SHOWING DOUBT IN THE FINAL SCENE TO KEEP THE INTEREST GOING. MY FEELING IS THAT MEREDITH'S PRIMARY GOAL WAS TO PLANT SEEDS OF DOUBT IN THE MIND OF BECKET, REMEMBER, SHE AND CASTLE HAVE FANTASTIC SEX WHEN SHE COMES BACK TO TOWN FROM TIME TO TIME.
MY MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT IS, HOW CAN CASTLE BE SUCH A NAIVE SAP. IS HE TOTALLY SPINELESS? HE HAS RISKED LIFE AND LIMB TO WIN THE LOVE OF BECKET BUT DOESN'T HAVE THE GUTS TO SAY NO TO HIS X-WIFE? MAYBE HE REALLY IS A SHALLOW SELF CENTERED BOY THAT HASN'T GROWN UP.

For a great character-driven show, not just Becket and Castle but all the regular cast, they also managed to have an interesting crime to solve. I was Castle-deprived after a month and would have been happy with a less-than-great episode but it turned out to be far more interesting than I had anticipated. Esposito and Ryan giving Castle relationship advice was so cool, you can tell they are watching out for Beckett and they don't want him messing things up.

I loved this episode but I love almost all of them! Castle is at his funniest when he is scared (He is hysterical in Headhunters!). I agree with one of the comments that I wish we could sometimes just enjoy the personal relationship between Castle and Beckett now that (after four long years) they are finally a couple. I sometimes don't pay attention to the murder-solving because I am so drawn in by this relationship. They are definitely the neatest, most fascinating couple (for me) on TV these days!

I'd like to think that the whole thing with Beckett considering their (hers and Castle's) relationship towards the end was just a build up for when we start learning more about Rick. Because honestly, I agree with Castle. He's the man she (Beckett) knows. And she knows a helluva lot about him. Just because she hasn't peeled off the missing father layer yet doesn't mean she doesn't KNOW Castle. Sure, the past shaped us into who we are; but it doesn't mean the present, the choices we make in life now, is any less important. Rick is this fun, laid-back kinda guy who chooses to be a loving father to his daughter despite never having a dad of his own to emulate. He chooses to share Kate's drive to bring justice for people who've been wronged. He chooses to stand by Kate through thick and thin. These are things Kate knows about him (and a lot more). So yeah, she knows a lot. Bottom line, I won't accept it if this thing becomes a serious issue between them. :)

Meredith had every reason to feel threatened and check in on Kate - although she's a terrible mother and Alexis is full-grown, she's still tied to her daughter with love, and it's only natural she'd want to test Kate out for herself, in her own cavalier and self-centered way. Meredith's having an affair doesn't conflict with either her or Rick's feeling there was no depth to the relationship. People don't have affairs without reason (only the truly shallow will wimp out with "it just happened!"). Bottom line, they just didn't trust each other.
Kate trusts Rick with her life, but with her heart? Well... she's wobbly. And he's been all about the pursuit of her as a mystery he'll never solve. I think that, just as with Kate... we have no idea what Rick's really capable of despite clarity under pressure and the occasional burst of protective violence (although it's safe to say we have ruled out serial killer.) But we don't get to see all the stuff they talk about in the middle of the night, because it's TV and everything has to move the story forward. I'd love to see more into Rick's head. His books show that he's paying attention to others' motivations and inner lives, but to his own? less clear. These actors have a lot of depth yet to explore.
P.S. Nobody's mentioned Martha. Susan Sullivan is just perfect in this role. Hasta la vista (she didn't say bitch, but you know she was thinkin' it!)

I didn't really think that highly of this episode. Sorry, but I would not want to be with a guy who can't even set any kind of boundary with his ex, and Beckett's maturity level has very little to do with that--her good judgment or lack thereof, yes. And Meredith's behavior throughout was just over the top. Thought that the interaction with Meredith at the end was thought-provoking for Beckett though. She's realizing that maybe she doesn't know Castle's inner person as well as she assumed she did.

I hope Beckett and Castle stay comfortable too. I have stopped watching too many shows that had years of provocation, lies, and missteps with the starring couple and I don't like it. Castle has a wonderfully comfortable cast and relationships and terrific stories.
