hi rationalgal. interesting about red john and patrick renouncing their bloodthirsty ways. my vote: if red john's a surgeon and he saves lisbon, i hope patrick would (and should) kill him with his own scalpel the minute he puts in the last stitch. but that's just me. just because they renounce doesn't mean i renounce, i guess.

hey anitraward1. your thought about jane finding that red john is less powerful at manipulating lorelei, is interesting. and of course, she won't be able to resist getting to the bottom of it. (maybe she'll become as obsessed with killing him as jane.) however, to me, the character's more interesting if he finds himself less single-minded than he thinks he is. don't forget that when lisbon (in crimson ticket) told him not to get roped into her game, patrick said he had known her approaching him was a machination all along. untrue. he was needy and took comfort in this lovely woman. he was genuinely surprised when she turned our to be red john's emissary. each time patrick makes a point of his cool clarity when it comes to lorelei, he does a very clear non-verbal contradiction the moment lisbon leaves.

That was a tasty little treat. Good possible ending Rationalgal!

This Red John thing keeps bothering me. I'm thinking the murder of Jane's family changed both men. Jane gave up his hucksterism and Red John gave up his serial killing (just kills for specific Jane-related reasons now). Timothy Carter mouthed RJ's words at the shopping mall when he talked about retiring and urged Jane to get on with his life also. The series ending may have both coming to an understanding of each other rather than a knock-down-drag-out fight. RJ has money, influence and perhaps surgical skills. Drives around in a limo. Is he a highly paid surgeon? How many doctors have we seen in the series? I vaguely remember one. If Lisbon is wounded in the final confrontation and near death and a doctor saves her and it turns out to be RJ, Jane would lose all interest in killing him. They could end up friends. Great mystery. Can't wait to see how it really ends.

Jane knows Red John uses damaged people who are weak. Jane let Lorelie go because he saw her as weak. If she comes back Jane will know that Red John's skills are not greater than his. Lorelie thinks what she and Jane had meant something and Jane will use that to gain knowledge about Red John. But believe Red John has a built in fail safe! I think Jane is getting tired of the cat and mouse game and wants to see Red John's head on a stick!

  6. anitraward1

I saw that and thought he showed more of a parental type fondness. You could be right about him gaining more knowledge about Jane. I believe that it is the emotional part that he will try to use against Jane. If you remember right Jane said he would marry her if he had too. Jane does not care about Lorelie and he will use her like she's using him. Lorelie seems to be using the info to bring him down. Jane is not as dumb as he's appearing to be about her.

many ideas about the nature of red john's relationship with jane have been put forth. here's mine. brett stiles says, "it's a kind of love, patrick." patrick says, regarding red john recruiting him, "i'd be giving him his heart's desire." in "red sky in the morning," red john lovingly strokes his shoulder and chest. guess where i'm going with this? i think there's a strong homoerotic component to red john's obsession with jane. could be subconscious. could be quite conscious and he'll act on it in some way. wouldn't that be a mindblower? red john could have had lorelei bail patrick out, buy him a drink and then drop the bomb about who sent her. instead he had her have sex with him thus using her as his proxy to gain the most intimate knowledge of patrick. carnal knowledge without consent. the law has a word for that, no? you bet red john got lorelei to give him a blow-by-blow account the next day. (joke)

hi anitra. simon says he's been "the next big thing" over and over again. he didn't have the luxury of waiting for that perfect cool part like other young actors. with a kid to support, he had to take roles that weren't strategic moves for a guy who wanted a film career. even the mentalist is an example of this. film people typecast him as patrick and as just a tv person. he must play a major role in a significant film to change perception. and at 43, it has to be soon. margin call, the killer inside me and next year's i give it a year, are examples of him trying to position himself for that. he's an ambitious and talented man. he's happy to have the money and success, but he wants the respect that a prestige film career would give him. i want very much for him to get it.

Here's a little Baker trivia! He drove the same car he does now in his Heartbreak Ridge series. I believe the car was silver. You can find it on youtube. You can also find his other series there! Take a peek! Simon Baker has been out there for a long time! He's got to be the hardest working man in the business!

I can't wait until we get back to msytery solving. I've missed it a great deal. There are some bright minds in this room. Better then any other sites I've seen. This is the best one. We get great reviews and then we can have at it! I probably will never do this again! These types of things don't happen to often. That's why I'm enjoying this as much as I can! The greats come and then they go, and then we wait and wait and wait for the next great! I would love to see Baker in an epic film. He is on his way! Someone will get him and the rest of the film makers will regret it! If they want the money man! Well! For Goodness Sake! Do! I! Have! To! Say! It! Ok! SIMON BAKER!

  11. anitraward1

This is why I love this site! Great Fans! I watched Sex and Death 101 last night. It's still funny! Have you seen Simon Baker in The Ring Two and Land of the Dead. I have seen all his movies, own most of them. I also own the Guardian series! I do own Affair of the Necklace too! Simon could act in anything! What really surprises me is that he was not recognized long before this. What I think will happen is that he will end up with a cult following. If you don't own his movies yet you better go get them now while you still can. I would watch him read the phone book! As Jane would say it's good for mnemonic's! It's also good for my eye's, he makes me see better!

rationalgal, you are so..so..rational. happy new year. agree. simon could play anything. he could play don draper from mad men but john hamm couldn't play patrick jane. he could play dexter but michael c hall couldn't play patrick. when he's around those cable guys, they look down on him because his show is a network show. glad he gets $435k an ep. suck on that, cable snobs. he's really the cary grant of our time. he should have a big movie career. i also loved him in the devil wears prada. he eats up the camera when he's on screen. he could probably get the french (canal plus) to invest in anything he did as he's the biggest star in france right now. he should be the joker in the next batman film and although i haven't read it, the lead in fifty shades of grey.

  13. rationalgal

I agree with huisclothes, anitraward1 and any and all others who understand that this series is all about the Patrick Jane character. Simon Baker was born for this role! I have watched him in most other films he's been in and this is the first one where the character just totally entranced me. All the nuances, the facial expressions that say everything, the creativity, the totally believable acting, the story line, and, yes, holy buckets, but this guy is SO good to look at! I could watch him watch paint dry. I hate whoever is responsible for giving us plots out of the wastebasket for season fillers. Simon Baker deserves nothing but Emmy and Oscar material. He is so versatile he could play any role. Check him out in Affair of the Necklace if you don't think this is true. Also Book of Love. Also The Lodger. He totally becomes the character he plays. I hope there are great movies in his future.

panama red? what the hell kind of mid-season finale was that? over the past years, the mid-season eps were bloodshot, jolly red elf, red moon and blinking red light. substantive and memorable and exciting. episodes that left you with your mouth hanging open. this was less than ok. something had to have gone wrong with production or the good writers were in comas for them to run that turkey. now they have the long winter break to further erode their audience. if they want to get more than just the diehards tuning in, they can't go black with an episode that doesn't make you die to find out what's coming next. crummy episodes always make me scared for the series and embarrassed for simon. he knows good material. they ought to give it to him.

  15. huisclothes

anitraward1, you rule. patrick carries the whole show. i even love his flaws. keeping the focus on one of the most beguiling characters ever created played by a fine actor and the most beautiful piece of protoplasm ever to walk the earth? i vote for that. every week. every other character exists as a satellite revolving around him. lisbon is a fantastic second banana. i hope sex, if not love, is somewhere in their future. cho is fun for jane to bounce off of. moving on. hated blood feud. who cares? rigsby is a zero. summer return, a nothing. and i liked her. gave the series an A in case some d--khead from the network is counting. this scheduling thing is infuriating. a series killer. may they never have a day's luck with the two zeros they have in elementary on thursday at ten.

my favorite episode, red sails in the sunset. second, a tie between red dawn and devil's cherry. i love the red john thread. it raises the show to the level of shakespearean tragedy. it's why the network bought the show in the first place. solving the mystery and moving on would be like hamlet avenging the murder of his father and going on to clean up the mean streets of denmark. without it, we have patrick and the real estate people, chefs, transvestites, bikers, etc. Feh. red dawn showed lisbon help patrick reclaim his self-respect -- backstory that gives more resonance to every episode since. in devil's cherry it was great to get inside this private and fascinating man's brain. so poignant.

  17. Myself

I agree with BWM that they should focus more on the ensemble cast again. Simon Baker is not enough to carry the show by himself. This focus on Red John is very tedious. Red Sails in the Sunset was the WORST episode in my opinion for that reason...all Jane/Red John and ignored most of the team. I've decided to skip any future RJ episodes. I really liked If it Bleeds it Leads and Blood Feud. It's nice to see other team members get more screen time. Devil's Cherry, even though Jane focused, was good because it was unique.

  18. uklass

I miss Van Pelt (I totally get the accomodating of the actresses pregnancy). I hope she has some SL soon!

  19. rationalgal

This show deserves an A+ if only in comparison with the other lame and tiresome stuff that TV subjects us to. The cases are interesting and cleverly resolved, and the acting is exceptional. Ever notice how both Simon Baker and Robin Tunney are able to express complex emotions without saying a word? Great talent! But I do think the Red John arc is due to run its course. The series can easily go on without out it because there are so many directions it could go. And Jane and Lisbon will definitely wind up admitting they love each other. It is SO obvious, but the Red John thing has set up a barrier that needs to be removed. Jane especially needs a family again to get his life back together. And who else but Lisbon? No one else knows or cares about him as much, and Lisbon is just waiting for the RJ thing to wind up so they can deal with what they have come to mean to each other.

The CBS network is killing the show in its Sunday night slot. Football delays all shaws and the Mentalist often airs too late.

    Rank: Regular Character

    D. If not for Devil's Cherry and Red Sails in Sunset, it'd be F. I also want more Jane/Van Pelt.

  22. Michael

The Mentalist is making the same mistake NCIS is cracking a case of the week and not doing a long term story arcs people are getting sick of these case of the week stuff its why CSI is going down hill and its why Law and Order went off the air.

  23. anitraward1

One more last thing, LOL! My favorite episode was The Devil's Cherry. They burned the midnight oil on this one! I was amazed at how they captured so much information in one episode. For me this set the bar really high and I hope they can reach it again. Red Sails in the Sunset and Cherry Picked were my runners up. The cast in these episodes seem to reach a zenith they haven't hit before. They seemed to be more honest in their connection to their characters which made them more believable.

  24. anitraward1

I also love Jane and Van Pelts relationship with each other. Jane has let her in and she seems to keep him on the right track. Van Pelt knows who Jane is and what he will do and she is not afraid to let him know that. I should say that I've seen this occur in season 5. I like that she just checks him and he pays attention to it. Rigsby's character is becoming more rounded with a funnier side. I actually like him more this season. Cho, Cho, Cho! There is something sneaky about him. I'm not sure what it is yet.

Last thing, with Jane closing cases the way he does and his level of expertise, I see a promotion in his future. He could become the middle manager boss. It would step his game up and give him more reach.

  25. anitraward1

I love everything about this show. They can't be perfect all the time but for the most part they are right on the money. I gave the show an A. I feel they deserve it. Jane and Lisbon work really well together, I like how they interact. They seem to have a profound respect for each other. I think that sometimes their feelings for each other seem to slip toward a intimate type of love but they pull back knowing that it would change the dynamic's of their relationship. They both are in need of a intimate relationship but I think they instinctively know it should not be to each other. They do hang on to the friend and family part of their relationship very strongly.
