Supernatural Review: To Tell the Truth

at . Comments

What are the odds that Sam and Dean are at odds? Again?

Don't worry, it's not like we really didn't see this one coming. Dean had his Purgatory issues and a vampire friend, Sam didn't look for his brother and tried to live the normal life, they get upset with each other pretty much every season and, well, brothers just don't agree on every single thing.

Sure, you might think that "Citizen Fang" was just another rehash of the Winchester boys arguing with each other, but with this being Supernatural Season Eight, the disagreement with each other feels like it falls into the brothers' questions about their roles in life beyond the obvious and long standing job of hunting things and saving people.

The Dean Smirk

The truth is that Sam and Dean have gone through a lot both physically and emotionally, especially compared to us viewers or even many of the other hunters that do similar work.

For the most part, Dean's been steeped in the monster killing business and it's pretty much been all he's ever known how to do, aside from picking up pretty girls and power eating pieces of pie. Sam on the other hand, did have that taste at the normal life with his short lived career at college and his affinity for having a less black and white approach to eliminating the creatures of the night.

Which in reality, after the journey the two have taken, makes for an interesting turn of events when Dean is sent deep into bloodthirsty Purgatory amping back up his ability to slay and Sam falls back in love (even if I'm still not feeling it) and right into TV nights and meeting the parents.

In a lot of ways, it feels as if the show has come full circle and reignited the old school vibe, with new school flavor.

I can certainly say that for a mid-season finale, I was hoping we would get more of Kevin, Crowley and the tablets, but I understand that really thrusting Sam and Dean's time off back into their faces will only increase the problems and dangers they'll have to face when the time does come to focus back on the larger mythology.

Of course, all you really want is for the brothers to get along and get past their issues.

I was actually glad that Sam genuinely tried to hear Dean out in respect to Benny, and I don't blame him for connecting what seemed like obvious dots when it came to the murder.

And it kills me when Dean pretty much tells Sam that Benny was more of a brother to him. Sure, I get his frustrations and I understand that he's defensive when Benny is accused, but he's got to know that hurts his brother.

Really, these two need to find a way to trust each other and remember that they are brothers, brothers who have both made mistakes, and should be finding ways to cut the crap.

Sam continued to have his flashbacks that still felt far too dreamlike and while I find them to be not really entertaining in the grand scheme, was intrigued when Sam got the present day text from Amelia. Okay, so it wasn't really her, but she did show up at the very end and acknowledged him, so that means he wasn't dreaming, right?

I'm glad she's finally here, but I can only hope that the rest of her story won't feel as bland as her past relationship with Sam. The stakes need to be raised for these two.

Similarly, Dean still has Benny and still trusts Benny, allowing them to take down another vampire and save the day. Yet, it really didn't matter because the whole situation was flawed from the start for them.

But, it was the definite blast from the past reintroduction of crazy Martin from the season five episode "Sam, Interrupted" that really threw reality and trust for a loop.

What can you believe anymore?

I guess you can count on something Dean said back in season one's "The Benders" about people being crazy with Martin turning what can only be seen as evil. Which was rather interesting in not only getting a creepy feeling from him, but where you wanted Benny to save the day. It was a great flip on that whole situation and I'm glad that we'll get to see more of Benny in the future.

But will Dean have to deal with Benny because of it and will Sam ever understand even if he did hang up before hearing the whole story?

There really was a lot to digest in terms of character and it makes me wonder what the end game of the show might be (not that I want it to end). Is the destiny of Sam and Dean to fight monsters until the last gunshot? I'm curious as to how the boys will reconilce their differences and be able to come together.

This was another decent episode for Supernatural, but I'm really hoping that when the show returns January 16 that Sam and Dean get a grip on working as a team, remembering that they are family, and figuring out how to close the gates of Hell.

What did you think of the episode? What do you want to see happen when the show returns? Sound off below!

Everything they have shown us about Sam and Amelia has been to decieve us. They have gone to great lenght to drag this out with no reveal what so ever. I believe the whole thing is a cover story planted in Sams head by naomi who has been using Sam for his entire "year off". Naomi was using Sam to find the tablet and Kevin maybe trying to find cas as well. I think Benny killed Martin but with the knife I dont think he drank him There was too much blood for that. I think Sam and the Alpha vamp helped Dean and Benny get out of purgatory. Sam and the Alpha being the "they" Benny referred to.

Dean made mistakes Sam made choices. Choices that resulted in the deah of a friend Martin, Elizabeth being badly badly traumatized, Benny on the DL lost and n peril and Sam once again destroying what little trust Dean has managed to rebuild in Sam once again.

Why do you think Dean's waited so long to tell Sam about Benny?
Carissa: I think he was probably feeling guilty about befriending a vampire, especially since Cas didn't make it out of purgatory. No because 1 he didn't need to because as an adult hecan have his own friends without reporting into Sam and two he didn't believe he'd ever see Benny again. Carla: A vampire is an enemy. Sam didn't consider Lenore a vamp an enemy why would he consider Benny one? Alice: Dean knows that Sam wouldn’t understand, especially after the whole Amy mess last season. I bet Dean would have still kept Benny a secret if Sam hadn’t shown up at the docks in time. He’s trying to protect Benny. Amy has nothing to do with it. She was a murderer and Dean stopped her. Sam killing Emma wasn't enough revenge apparently for Sam. If he hadn't expected Sam to show up then why did Dean text him with his whereabouts? What did you think of Sam's initial reaction of Benny? What will he tell Dean in the next episode?
Carissa: Sam's initial reaction to kill Benny made sense. It's what they do. I think he's going to be pissed to learn he gave up Amelia when Dean brought back a vamp friend. No Sam's reaction didn't make sense, it's way over the top for the situation. Sam didn't give up Amelia, she dumped Sam for Don. Carla: Sam's reaction was natural. He's a hunter and Benny should be the hunted. Sam's restraint says a lot about the brother's relationship though. With a simple head shake from Dean, Sam backed down. Despite the craziness of the situation, Sam accepted that Benny was not an immediate threat. Sam's reaction isn't normal and Lenore wasn't hunted why should Benny be? What restraint? Sam knew Benny wasn't any kind of threat because he was told repeatedly Benny was a friend. Alice: Sam’s reaction is natural for a hunter who’s spent a lifetime hunting these things, and especially natural when he had a monster friend not too long ago that Dean killed because she killed humans. I’m certain Sam will rub that all in Dean’s face, asking for proof that Benny hasn’t killed before. No Sam's reaction was over the top and since when is a vamp a thing? As Benny said "Take away the fangs and the fun and I was born human." Sam told Dean in no uncertain terms it was ok to use Benny to get out of purgatory but then he should of just killed him. When did Sam turnpsycho killer? Sean: Same as I hope Dean comes to understand better Sam's decision to want a normal life. Sam doesn't want a normal life. He could of left anytime he wanted yet he always found excuses not too. Do you think at some point Dean might have to choose between Sam and Benny? Carla:Dean would pick Sam no matter what. Not necessarily. If Dean choses to give into Sam about Benny who does Sam force out of Dean's life next with his tantrums Cas? Soon Sam is the only one Dean has left in his life. Alice: After all, Sam had to choose between Dean and Ruby in season four, so why not put Dean in that same situation? Yeah and isn't it interesting when he had a choice between a brother who has done everything for him including sell his soul and going to hell to save Sam and a demon Sam chose a demon? Dean has already been in position to chose and Dean has chosen Sam and yet Sam still wants more.

I have been a fan since season 1 and I have been slowly getting into Season 8. The episodes have been different, more tense and that's not a bad thing. As far as the brothers relationship; they have been at odds with each other from the beginning. They have different personalities and that is what has made their characters so interesting. Brotherly love is always behind the anger but conflict is what makes the stories. I like Kevin and Crowley and Cass (glad he's back) but I think the whole close the gates of hell is a red herring. If they do that the series would have to end so I think something else is going on this season; maybe in heaven. I have grown to like Benny and I hope we do see a Dean and Benny show or maybe Benny, Dean and Sam. The one thing I don't like is Amelia. The story is boring and I don't see Sam with this homely woman so I hope she turns out to be a monster who needs to be killed and quickly.

Benny made this ep good but not as good when we have Crowley and Kevin. feels like this season has 2 separate story-lines. Maybe they inter-connect at the end and make a grand finally.

Is this the last season? Storyline(storylines?) are pointing that way. Can you really kill off Bobby and not go downhill? Please bring back some of that old time magic from seasons past. And besides, where was the dog in last weeks episode?

Good episode, but what I really want to see is a more dynamic storyline. For me things have progressed too slowly. I'm glad that we have met the Amelia character in real life rather than only in flashbacks. Also, this episode set the tone for Sam and Dean's battle against Crowley: they will return reunited and stronger than ever. I hope Benny stays the honest character and somewhat dies a hero.
Of course, only Supernatural can introduce love triangles so swiftly and literally obliterate the third link in a second. The Don guy got some issues and I really am looking forward to a fight between him and Sam where Sam kicks his ass.
Can't wait!

I've been hooked on this show since the pilot. This season is disappointing though. The Sam and Amelia story is so unbelievable. I hope someone sees them in the bar and it ends up getting her killed or causing her to never want to see him again. Then Sam can snap back into reality. I don't want to see this show end but it kind of feels like the writers are trying to make people not care if it doesn't get another season.

i really liked this episode !
the highlight for me is benny and dean !
the character of benny is really intriguing and well written
Man i was gonna be really pissed if that crazy hunter killed him !
About sam and dean ,the show has always been about the brotherly bond ,so i really hope they would get over their issues ! however i gotta side with dean on this one !,,i don't see how he can get over the fact that his brother gave up on him like that !
But here's for hoping that they reconcile and be brothers again because that's the best part about supernatural !

I just watched and honestly the only real thing that made me know that Benny is not dead was that Dean was on the road and not visibly upset. I know marvins's neck was ripped out but Elizabeth was covered in blood that I thought maybe she had slit his throat after Benny was dead. I think the boys need some time apart like have Sam stay stable with Garth or become Kevin and Mrs. Tran's personal bodyguard.
