The Vampire Diaries Review: Yes, Sire

by at . Comments

Hmm... I wonder which scene from "My Brother's Keeper" will have Vampire Diaries fans talking tonight. And tomorrow. And well into 2013...

Yes, TV Fanatics, Damon and Elena finally went there. Their Waltz turned into a Horizontal Mambo and and the squeals from Delena fans could be heard for miles and miles. But it wasn't the pinnacle of an romance that many have been waiting for since The Vampire Diaries Season 1.

No, there was a twist far different that any contortion of Elena's while writhing in bed: Caroline and Stefan determined that Elena is sired to Damon.

Elena Gilbert in Pain

The Vampire Diaries just can't let this triangle die, can it?

Two weeks ago, I praised Elena and Stefan's split. It felt natural, it made sense in the context of Elena's transition and her heightened feelings for Damon. It was the perfect time to have her commit to the other Salvatore brother and for the show to move on from the back-and-forth of the past few seasons.

Alas. Now we're back there again. Damon is the evil one who cheated to get the girl. Elena didn't really choose him, Stefan will be determined to win her back and break the sire bond... and blah, blah, blah. It may seem like a new tune, but it's really the same old song.

And it feels rather contrived. The Vampire Diaries is a fun, wild ride. It's best not to over-think the cliffhangers and crazy turns and storylines because, come on, this is a show about supernatural beings and, at the end of every hour, I challenge anyone to not claim they were not entertained. That's almost all you can ever ask for from a series.

But there's always a line. And here it comes across like Julie Plec and company simply invented the concept of a vampire being sired to another vampire. Has that ever been touched on before? Is there any reason to think it would make sense in this case, aside from giving the writers a convenient way to drag out the brotherly fight over Elena?

This was lame. It was a cop out. I don't look forward to the ramifications. I'm far more interested in why Hayley is working with Professor Shane and what that duplicitous teacher has in mind. I care a great deal more about Jeremy (never thought I'd write that!) and his nightmares and urges and how the awoken hunter inside of him will affect his relationship with all the vampires in his life.

Heck, I was actually invested in Klaroline this week, as Klaus was at his charming best and I believed for the first time that these two could really be a couple.

In other, disappointing words: at the moment, the show's three main characters are at the center of my least interesting storyline. That's never a good thing.

We'll see where this all goes, of course (next week? To World War II!). Up until this episode, The Vampire Diaries Season 4 had been off to the best start of any season to date. The hunter stuff has been fascinating, Elena's transformation has affected everyone around her, Phoebe Tonkin is downright gorgeous.

But I worry. I'm now afraid the love triangle will overshadow everything else. And who should be the most angry over this siring nonsense? Delena shippers! They have been waiting for years for these two to get together, yet they can't fully enjoy it  - they can't enjoy it at all, really - because apparently it isn't real.

This episode may have represented the best day of Damon's life. But it was my worst experience as a Vampire Diaries fan this season.

What did everyone else think?

[CONT]... breaking the sire bond she'll go back to Stefan, or even revert to Old Elena, because we know Stefan prefers human Elena, and Damon loves both sides of Elena. What Elena needs right now is acceptance for whatever change that will happen to her.

Yeah yeah people may rant and all due to the undying love triangle but as a fan of both Stelena and Delena I'm just enjoying every minute and every second. Back in Season 1 and 2 I was totally rooting for Stelena. Even in the middle of Season 3 I was still rooting for Stelena because their love is "epic", as Caroline said. But somehow, in this season, especially in this episode, I can totally feel Damon and Elena's chemistry. I can feel my heart beat whenever Damon and Elena are looking at each other. It's like there's this wild electricity between them. Is it because they are a couple in real life? I don't know, but I just love it.
Elena may be sired and all but I don't think sired supernaturals feel the urge to have sex with their master. Or that would be awkward (ehem, Tyler and Klaus). Unless at some point during the past episodes Damon has told Elena to love him or have sex with him, I think whatever they have is real. If Elena is really sired to Damon, I don't think after breaking the bond she'll go back to Stefan, because let's face it, Stefan prefers human Elena. But Damon loves both Elenas.

EXACTLY! I was soooo mad when Karoline and Stefan were interrupting our ectasy with their incessant chatter and cuts to them, but then that they have to rationalize Elena's attraction to Damon with a lame: 'Sire Bond'?! Come ON! WHY couldn't we have all just ENJOYED it as a PURE, mutually-consented, union of those two! Huh?! :( !! (I chose to still enjoy it as such, anyways, cuz Elena was feeling attracted to Damon for a LONG time as a HUMAN, remember!). It was still eye candy to see those two FINALLY get it on, (tho interrupted TOO MUCH by Stefan and Karoline!). Nobody interruped the love scene between Stefan and Elena (their first time). :/

maybe this "sire" thing means elena and damon are meant to be together... or maybe their feelings are so strong that they bonded. i think caroline thinks "sired" like klaus and tyler but maybe it could also mean like soul mate.... at first i thought that is what she was gonna say "that they are soul mates" but she obviously didn't... i saw the preview for next week and damon told stefan "what if she actually has feelings for me" and stefan was like "no she would never have feelings for you" so i also think stefan is delusional and is being a jealous brat. and the writers have to have their story line go somewhere... if we didnt have carolines commentary, damon and elena would have hooked up, but then next week where would we be?????? you have to keep it going and not get bored

Julie Plec said: “The sire bond doesn’t impact emotions, love or sex. Let's stick to that! Or:
Julie Plec said there's one more story left to be told before Elena tells Damon she loves him.
I'm hoping that story is this stupid connection

I relate to his case, and wish him happiness... What will happen, we will have to see, but I do not endorse the writers on their "let's keep destroying Damon" plan, after all, it is the bigger fan base, and like it or not, a difficult love is always more epic than a normal one. Think about it.

for all eternity (ehhh, selfish??) And what about all the times the three of them were 2gether and Damon had to see his brother all lovy dovy with Elena. Still, in this season, after being rejected again, he still supported his brother and counted on him for everything. Do not be fooled, I do like Stefan, it's just that I do not go for the "poor Stefan" scenario everyone chooses to believe. He has been selfish all his life and now, he has not shown difference. If u truly love someone, that love surpasses anything, and anyone and for Elena being a Vamp, reminds him of Katherine, strong, independent and fun. Human Elena was just to moralist, boring and weak. If their love is EPIC, like everyone says, then he will accept her as she is, and Damon will gladly step aside (as he intended to do at the beginning of the season). Stefan has his hidden agenda and I have noticed from the get-go, and even though I did not like Damon in the first few eps of the show, I do feel for him now. After reading every single comment, this is what I have to say; 1st, To all that keep comparing the show to the books, DROP IT! The producers made clear that the show is based on the books but it will b a different story all 2gether... and I truly hope so. 2nd, The whole Damon/Elena/Stefan thingy is becoming redundant. I try to keep bias, but the truth is that the Damon that we see in the show is nothing to the one in the books, and for that, I truly like him. It is unfair that even though he is the one that ALWAYS puts his pride aside and ends up saving Elena (& Stefan for that matter), the one that even though is a PREDATOR (yes, let's not forget these are vamps people)His kindness always ends up showing, even though he tries to hide it behind his smart-ass remarks and smirk. He always wanted his father's approval, but instead Stefan got it, he fell for Katherine(truly did) but she fell for Stefan, who after turning, decided to turn his brother, just to not be alone for all eternity (ehhh, selfish??)
