Gossip Girl Review: Partners in Crime

by at . Comments

Gossip Girl finally found a little bit of its groove again with the aptly-named "Monstrous Ball."

After a strong premiere, Gossip Girl Season 6 quickly lost steam. The characters have felt like they're through the motions at times in the buildup to the finale. There are always fun moments, but overall, it's been slow.

Hopefully tonight signified the momentum building once again as we head into the back half of this abbreviated final chapter in anticipation of a conclusion that can at least send the show into retirement on a high note.

Tonight's Cotillion-themed episode was all about alliances past, present and future, with the characters jockeying for position and trying desperately to take the reins in life, even if it was at the expense of their peers.

In almost every case, best laid plans blew up in their faces.

Blair and Chuck Love

Convoluted as the plot was at times, at least some things happened that reverberated throughout the Upper East Side and altered the trajectory of the season a bit, which hasn't been the case in previous weeks.

Blair and Sage were determined to make the former's company a success with the latter's Cotillion attire making for one provocative coming out party and offering her a chance to dethrone her dad's big proposal.

Serena was concerned about Steven’s attitude, but after some sleuthing, found out why. Sadly, or perhaps for the best in retrospect, his daughter's undermining derailed any hope of Serena and Steven getting engaged.

After stealing G's phone in the least believable run-in/misplaced electronic device Gossip Girl has ever thrown at us, the girl in the sex dress treated us to a screening of the Dan-Serena sex tape from the Season 5 finale.

Dan and Georgina ... okay, that's not even really a tandem at this point. G is just a crazy literary agent and pot-stirrer gone rogue. A true wild card with the night's most memorable quotes, but nobody's ally.

Georgina was impressed with Sage's gumption. Steven was irate with his daughter, but also upset with his would-be fiancee's actions. B was crushed by the tape; S was devastated that B and Sage were in cahoots.

Fans were probably just hoping that this marked the last of the Spences on GG.

The sex tape's long-awaited release certainly didn't lack for collateral damage. PG-rated as it was, no one came away clean. Dan came away with some phone numbers; he was as close to a winner as there was.

Sage and Georgina

Perhaps the most upsetting facet of tonight was yet another setback to the Blair and Serena's relationship that has been a cornerstone of GG since the pilot. As she said, it's been a long time since they were friends.

If they're going to find their way back to each other by December 17, the clock's ticking. The pursuit of a common enemy might help them mend fences, but it's sad to see how wide the rift between them has grown.

Ironically, if any relationships were strengthened tonight, they were Blair and Chuck - which Dan spent a good portion of the evening trying to unravel - and Dan and Serena, who wallowed in their mutual humiliation.

The surviving members of Dair Nation may have briefly felt a tingle up their collective leg, but it was clear by the end that no matter how ridiculous the Chair pact may sound, they are committed to it wholly.

Even as Chuck and Ivy's plan hit a roadblock when they couldn't turn Lily and Bart against each other (at least for the time being), and when Dan hoped to ruin Chuck in his true love's eyes, Chair didn't break.

The Chuck chapter of Dan's novel didn't have the desired effect. Nor did his efforts to worm his way back into the emotional opening he saw between that necklace and her ring finger. Lonely Boy got the heave-ho.

Hey, maybe there's a Derena reconciliation on the horizon. The diner scene definitely hinted that we're headed in that direction going forward. Wonder if missionary works for her ... in the fashion sense, that is.

Meanwhile, Nate and Sage and Rufus and Ivy continued to vie for the honor of least appropriate (and sadly, useful) couple. Poor Rufus. So maligned by his ex-wife and the show's writers simultaneously.

Overall, better, Gossip Girl. Not great, but better to say the least. Let's keep it going and see what happens heading into the final month of episodes and give this once-great series the sendoff it deserves.

Now, to sum up, everything is slowly returning to its place - Serena and Dan began their reconciliation in 6x05 with replica of scene from season 1 when Dan took Serena in high-style restaurant on their first official date, this time in a simple restaurant, while Chuck and Blair were working their way as successful business people, after of course they remove'' small'' barriers related to their parents.

But this is a TV series, it's all made up, and there should be no parallels in real life! Because if this is based on real-life events, Serena and Blair would have ceased to be friends back in season 1 and never talked ever. Again, I really do not see why Blair was hurt because Serena and Dan had sex, for a week or two later, Blair had sex with Chuck, look at the irony, in Monaco, and also she did not say to Dan! Of course Dan’s behavior now, ie. his quasi attempts to regain Blair, are in fact Dan’s attempt to take revenge on Blair because she was deceived him and returned to Chuck! Dan does not want to be with Blair again, because if he want that he would went to look for her during the summer, instead he chose to ignore her calls! What you reported at this as a reason for Blair’s anger toward Dan and Serena could be accepted if Serena had sex with Dan to spite Blair, but Serena did not have sex with Dan to spite Blair! Because if it so, then why Serena did not released the sex tape to the public? Serena filmed sex with Dan because it was a requirement of GG that GG does not publish parts of Blair’s diary, and to regain the love of her life - Dan! These are the only two reasons why Serena had sex with Dan and filmed it! Now why Serena and Dan have not told anyone about sex, probably because it is their private matter, and it is normal that couples have secrets! As for the Dan’s character, what do you expect he is such character from season1, it can not be changed overnight, and the only person who can keep under control Dan’s flaws was Serena, or she was at least partially succeeded.

@Drea XOXO, first to tell you every honor in such a deep analysis of the series! You touch a lot of topics and with most of what you said, I agree, but it still has that but! Serena and Blair now are no longer sisters and BFF, you're right, but they had ceased to be only in mid-season 5, and not before. In previous seasons, Serena and Blair makes one other sorts of nonsense, but they always at the end forgiving each other, remember in season 1 of their showdown at the school during the game ... Reason why Serena and Blair are no longer BFF is that Blair was entered in a relationship with Dan, although it is well known that Serena still loves Dan! On the other hand, Blair’s surprise when she saw the sex tape of Serena and Dan is totally unnecessary, because when that sex occurred, Blair already has chosen Chuck! What you reported at this as a reason for Blair’s anger toward Dan and Serena could be accepted if Serena had sex with Dan to spite Blair, but Serena did not have sex with Dan to spite Blair! .....how would you feel if this had happened to you, you are willing to still go out of the way to help your old friend despite her passing judgment on everything you do to be reminded that yet again she can just take your BF and have sex with him without him having any remorse or qualms. this just reminded blair of when it was nair in pilot and he was desperately in love with S despite still remaining with B......... so yea i can understand why she felt hurt, S had sex with lonely boy just to get back at B smh, typical S. this is why i have no symph for S and why i say her and LB deserve each other. B never denied feelings for C, its coz of that dumb pact why she never went back to him after her miscarriage and crash (show brushed over that we never were 100 who the dad was....)

Okay let me brush up on why blair reacted that way to the revelation of the tape because there seems to be a lot of GG3.0 on the review board today. blair was made to feel inferior to Dan and serena for as long as i can remember due to various reasons. (her infamous schemes and TL with Chuck) she tried to contact dan and be mature about the situation but as referenced on various occasions he rejected her calls. fast forward to now, S and B are no more because she feels B isn't her sister/Bestie no more (which lets be honest hasn't been apparent since s2/3 i say roughly) and thought blair would sabotage her relationship when infact it was the unnecess character (refuse to type her name again she doesnt exist) now we have self righteous dan, passing judgment, shacking up in her apartment. we all knew what they did last summer but blair yet they continued to act as if they were immortal and had morals knowing if this got out that would be the end of everything for them....

@zoran i agree with the serena and dan part of your comment. i mentioned too in a previous review about how they both deserve each other considering their circumstances at the moment, its only fitting. i did want sernate, i'm not going to lie but they are at different moments and at the end of day he's in love with the serena from constance not today. dan will and is in love with serena and i looked at your analysis of his love for her and agree. if it wasn't for G would lonely boy still be with his S...... and meh still not the point, serena was known to open easily back then and be a party girl remember....that death she was involved in.....

@layla same it would have been so refreshing

I like how Dan look at Serena at the end. hope that she will give him hard time to vet her back; not so easy for this douche.
