Arrow Review: The Mission Comes First

by at . Comments

This week's Arrow earned a cold hard five stars! Everyone was involved in "Damaged," as there was a balance between love, family, business... and vigilante ass kicking.

After his arrest, Oliver backed Laurel against a wall when he proclaimed he wouldn't have an attorney represent him unless it was her. Was anyone really surprised that Laurel caved? Things have certainly thawed between this former couple over the past few weeks.

Oliver Arrested

Hands down, my favorite scene was Laurel and Oliver in his bedroom at the party. You know, the "Burning Man meets Shawshank Redemption" soiree that was in poor taste but simultaneously brilliant and amusing. Laurel hated Oliver even when she found out he was alive. Do you really blame her? Oliver was cheating on her with her sister when the yacht went down. Not only did she lose her love, but she lost part of her family. It took her awhile to realize that she wasn't the only one who suffered.

It may have taken a few weeks and a polygraph test to shift the relationship between these two, but they are definitely in a different place now. Sometimes the chemistry between people just cannot be ignored. Laurel hadn't ever thought what Oliver might've gone through on that island. When he was being targeted by others, her mama bear instinct to protect him came out, even if it put her at odds with her own father.

I was so focused on what happened to my family that I didn't even stop and wonder what could've happened to you. | permalink

Well, for starters, there was a lot of torture. We finally met Deathstroke, though I felt it wasn't super clear that the masked man on the island who tortured Oliver was this infamous character. Maybe this is something that was easier for the comic book fans to pick up on, but either way he will definitely be a major force over the coming weeks. It's interesting that Oliver's loyalty and instincts kicked in right away on the island.

Oliver technically didn't know the original Arrow at all, but that guy did save him and keep him alive. He sensed that the other dude who captured him was shady and not to be trusted. Trust seems to be a huge theme on this show. Oliver wants to tell his family the truth but knows he can't. Walter finally knows that Moira has been lying and betraying his trust by keeping the salvaged yacht in a warehouse.

I have to say, I've been surprised with the turn Moira has taken. In the pilot, I thought she was just awful. Yes, she may be working with the men on "the list" but I get the feeling it's not necessarily at her own free will. She did not put out the order for that security guard to be killed, she seemed genuinely upset that Walter was taking an indefinite leave of absence, and she issued quite the threat:

If any member of my family so much as gets a paper cut, I will burn your entire world to ashes. | permalink

Wow! Remind me to keep that one in my arsenal for future use! I'm interested to see more of Moira's interactions with the people who know about the list.

As predicted by many of you readers, Diggle took Oliver's place as the hooded man while Oliver was under house arrest. Throwing an obnoxious party was the perfect way to show people he was still just a playboy who couldn't possibly be out taking down criminals. After all, you can't be in two places at once.

Laurel and Detective Lance aren't dumb, but Oliver is keeping a pretty good cover for now. What did you think of this week's episode? How would you rank the kiss between Oliver and Laurel? What would you have worn to the prison party? What did you think of Deathstroke's introduction? Hit the comments!

Steve I think its great that we only get 10 minutes of action in the episodes, as you put it. Any more would diminish the overall story not to mention character growth. I think my favourite character so far is Detective Lance. He's a smart guy with many demons and seems like he has a vice for drinking. The boat going down really turned his world upside down just as much as Olivers. I love them as enemies at the minute but think if he knew the truth about the boat been sabotaged then maybe they would work together.

When the show was first announced, I too was bummed that
Justin Hartley wouldn't be reprising his role as Ollie.
Now that the show has come out though I AM SO HAPPY that
he didn't! Hartley's Green Arrow would not have fit the
tone of this show at all... a tone that I really enjoy.
When they said they were going "dark," boy, they weren't
kidding. Stephen Amell is rocking this part like no other could. Arrow is lightyears beyond what I was
expecting... the cast, the PACING, the execution, the
humor, the guest-baddies, the eye candy... Laurel and
Thea, WOW! (I don't swing that way, but Stephen is one
handsome fella, as well. Lol!)
I liked Justin's take in Smallville, but I like Amell's
for different reasons, and they made an excellent choice
in casting him, as well as the rest of the cast. A++

did anyone notice way back in the first episode at the very beginning deathstrokes head on a spike just has OQ was being picked up, should be interesting to see how that came about.

Strawberry fields

I knew that Oliver would never be so stupid to just let himself get caught on camera like that. Pretty risky plan though. I feel like things between Oliver and Laurel are being handled very well. The scene when she asked him to show her the scars was really great. Aside from obvious feelings she has for the guy, she's also acting like a mature grown-up, unlike her jerk of a father. Man, that guy is so annoying. Diggle is still pure awesomeness.

I hope I'm not the only one who would like o see more Arrow action .. I mean we only get like 10 minutes max of Arrow action out of 45 - 50 minutes. And I would like for more character development with the villains like China White, Deadshot, & Deathstorke along with back stories .. The whol mob boss list is boring

This is one of the best shows I have seen in a long while. I like the combination of Diggles and Arrow but feel the relationship btwn Thea and Arrow be more in depth. I record all of these and wait til the weekends to relax and catch. Great show!!!

I would have preferred Justin Hartley in the main role as well - Amell seems to have some trouble with the role (a bit odd considering his acting background, but then some actors just seem to have a rough time playing comic book/"superhero" roles). That said, they could have done a lot worse, and Hartley was already set for the (now) soon-to-be-cancelled Emily Owens MD...

I loved this episode, more so than previous episodes, because things heated up nicely between Laurel and Oliver. I thought the whole "let me see your scars" thing was hot! And I adore Paul Blackthorne, mainly because he was Harry Dresden for a short time, and did such an impressive job at it.
I liked the fight sequence between Deathstroke and the original Arrow, too, that was pretty interesting to watch.
Oh, and the line of the night was the mama bear "burning your world to ashes" line that Oliver's mother delivered to the ever-hot Captain Jack! WTG!

Arrow Season 1 Episode 5 Quotes

I'm thinking prison, Burning Man meets Shawshank Redemption. The invite says "come before Oliver Queen gets off."

Oliver

I am having a sizeable get together for tomorrow evening and there is a better than likely chance it spills into the outdoor pool.
