Gossip Girl Round Table: "Gone Maybe Gone"

by at . Comments

Welcome back, once again, to TV Fanatic's Gossip Girl Round Table discussion! Below, our panelists break down all aspects of last night's Gossip Girl Season 6 premiere, "Gone Maybe Gone."

In our Q&A session, TVF CEO Eric Hochberger (Gossip Guy), editor Steve Marsi (Mister Meester) and staff members Courtney Morrison, Christina Tran and Leigh Raines share their opinions.

Weigh in with your take on the following topics after reading ours!

-------------------------------

1. Favorite Gossip Girl quote from the episode?

Leigh: It's not possible to pick, so I'm going with all of the Georgina and Blair banter. Their rapport was hilarious.

Courtney: "Do that again!" I was thinking the same thing just watching the scene! Close second goes to Chuck's speech to Blair in the limo.

Eric: Of course NBC would give Lola her own show. They'll probably push back Community a little more for it.

Christina: Dan to S: “Wisconsin? Seriously? Do you even know where that is on a map?” Sure, a little rude… but I was thinking exactly the same thing!

Steve: Anything out of Georgina's mouth, particularly her barking orders at Dan and theorizing that Serena may be a brainwashed sacrifice-in-waiting for a religious cult.

2. Favorite obvious inside joke of the night?

Leigh: "Serena is not Country Strong." Because I love that movie and love Leighton in it.

Courtney: I'm going with Leigh. The Country Strong reference was awesome and Leighton Meester is so damn fun!

Eric: I'm already a sucker for Gossip Girl cheesy narration. Give her a chance to make the meta reference to the final season and you have me smiling from the start.

Christina: I couldn’t help but smile when Chuck said: “Crashing parties is one of our favorite pastimes.” Ah, Gossip Girl, you make getting through Mondays worth it.

Steve: I like Gossip Girl referring to this as her last season, and to her limited time left. Also, the renamed Ostroff Center and the fact that Lola is doing a pilot on NBC, which is also true of Ella Rae Peck.

3. What was your favorite thing about the Season 6 premiere?

Leigh: That Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage wrote it. There is nothing like the originals. If I have to pick an actual thing, it was Serena being completely fine and reinventing herself. Go S!

Courtney: That it focused on the originals in a way we haven't seen in a few seasons. I'm sure it's due to the fact that Schwartz and Savage were behind it, but it felt like old school Gossip Girl and we desperately need that after last season. My least favorite is definitely having crazy G around. I'm hoping she doesn't stick around all season, I don't think she's needed.

Eric: Besides the obvious choice of having Schwartz and Savage back, it'd be having G around. I will always appreciate her craziness, even if Amira can't translate for us.

Christina: There were tons of awesome moments, but I especially loved every dig at G by B.

Steve: All our responses to questions #1 and #2 combined? Just that the snark and the spark were back and it was fun to watch, with the gang all together and crashing a formal function like old times.

4. How did the Chair sex scene rank among their past dalliances?

Leigh: Unfortunately like McKayla Maroney I was...not impressed. We've seen wayyy better between these two over the years. Maybe it also lost its luster because it was in the previews so much.

Courtney: It was pretty hot! Nothing will ever beat the original limo ride, but I would rank Monte Carlo pretty high up there.

Eric: 3. I'm so over Chair. I can't handle anymore cheese with this being "apart to be together" crap. Dan had it right with his speech.

Christina: Off the charts! From the steamy hookup to the unstoppable banter, I’m betting all Chair fans were left just as satisfied.

Steve: Definitely behind limo and piano, but you have to like that Josh and Stephanie threw the fans a bone (so to speak) before quasi-breaking them up again.

5. More ridiculous, Chuck's outfits or Dan's hair?

Leigh: Both absurd, yet standard operating procedure. Dan got a haircut though, couldn't they have trimmed it up a bit? I miss the crew cut from season one.

Courtney: So hard to choose because both have been so ridiculous for so long. I can't imagine Chuck in normal clothes (remember the track suit!) and I have kinda become used to Dan's mop. Humphrey's hair cut did look a little better so Chuck's wardrobe gets the more ridiculous vote.

Eric: Bow tie. Plaid jacket. You'd think nothing could be more ridiculous than that. Then Dan shaves the sides of his head and leaves a dead skunk on top. Does someone have a better animal for me yet!?

Christina: Ridiculous = Dan’s hair always.

Steve: Gotta go with Chuck here. The plaid jacket and bow tie are just so over the top (in a good way of course). Dan's hair is just part of his hipster, occasionally pretentious novelist look. I've become accustomed.

6. Better slap of Dan: Blair's or Serena's?

Leigh: OMFG Serena's. Blair really doesn't have a right to be mad at Dan. Even as a Chuck/Blair fan, I will honestly say that Dan's speech to Blair was pretty spot on. HOWEVER, I can't believe he verbally bitch slapped SVDW like that! Why was he even there? I would've pulled a Bianca from "10 Things I Hate About You" when she pulls a triple whammy on Andrew Keegan at the prom.

Courtney: Serena's, only because it felt more justified. But I can't say I didn't enjoy both...

Eric: S. See: answer 4. Dan should have been slapping B. Though that might be frowned upon.

Christina: Sabrina’s… I mean Serena’s because I just didn’t expect it to happen twice and it was rightfully deserved.

Steve: S on merit - even Dan said he had that one coming, whereas he had some reason to be bitter at his ex - but B on technique. That was unexpected and his response was pretty priceless.

7. Shadiest new character: Amira, Sage or Steven?

Leigh: Well Sage is in high school, duh. Steven I don't know yet, he seems... healthy, which is unusual on this show. I suppose I'll go with Amira. No clue what's up with her.

Courtney: Hmm... how to choose because they all are going to be extremely shady! Sage gets my vote. Why is a high school girl snooping around The Spectator? How did she know who Nate's college professors were? Sounds like a creepy stalker to me.

Eric: Sage. Girl must have the best damn fake ID. Was it just me or did she say she was writing about The Spectator for her high school newspaper. 1) Lame article. 2) Nate's going to go down harder than Sandusky.

Christina: Sage. We all know Nate’s never had luck with the ladies, and is it just me… or does she bear a striking resemblance to Vanessa?!

Steve: Let's go with my namesake, if only because he appears the least shady right now.

8. Who the heck is Gossip Girl?!

Leigh: As Gossip Girl herself told us in the season two finale, we are all Gossip Girl. :)

Courtney: No idea. I want to think that it is someone who has been in the background all of these years. I will be disappointed if it is some random person we just met.

Eric: Damnit, I'm still voting Eric. They can give him the mentions they want, but I still know he's in Africa. He's hiding in trendy NYC coffee shops gossiping.

Christina: I’ve really got no clue, but I’m hoping it’s Jenny now because she needs to make an appearance.

Steve: Damien. He's the only one old enough and who could have that much dirt ... and money to afford a Kristen Bell-like voice modulator. Just an out-there theory.

As for the whole Serena/Sabrina thing… and I can't believe I'm about to say this... I had a lot of problems with Serena last season, but in this episode I was totally "you go, girl" with her. It's great that they all dropped everything to go rescue her, but being mad at her for disappearing? Come on, guys! Let me point out that she disappeared AND NONE OF YOU NOTICED. She was crazy to think that she can just pretend to be someone else for the rest of her life, but I don't blame her at all.

Favourite quote - Blair: "There's only so many ways this goes: kidnap/ransom, torture/murder or brainwash/cult" :) Favourite obvious inside joke - Blair again: "Serena is not Country Strong". Leighton was super cute in that movie. Favourite thing about the season 6 premiere - NJBC is on the mission! I always love it when that happens. Chair sex scene - hot as hell, but not as hot as the piano scene. More ridiculous - Dan obviously. Chuck's outfits are NEVER ridiculous, you got that? Better slap of Dan - Serena's. Dan was a total dick for no reason. Shadiest new character - Sage. She looks way too innocent. Amira is interesting and Steven is cute. Is he staying for good, btw? Who the heck is GG - I'm with Steve, Damien is an awesome candidate.

Dan totally deserved to get slapped by B, she just hasn't found out all the reasons why yet.

I loved Country Strong!!! Also Dan does have a point with Blair. I'm tired of their together not together bs.

7. Shadiest new character: Amira, Sage or Steven?
Amira. I don't know who she's working for. 8. Who the heck is Gossip Girl?!
I think the identity of Gossip Girl has changed more than twice. I also think that it was originally created by St Judes and Constance alumni that were part of that Secret Gentlemen's club (Bart, William Van Der Bilt, Diana) so that they could steer the paths of their heirs. But they simply lost control of the site.

1. Favorite Gossip Girl quote from the episode?
I might go with Chuck saying "Thank God I'm an atheist." Blair, Chuck and Georgina's quotes owned this episode.
2. Favorite obvious inside joke of the night?
The crashing parties joke, because it's so true that its not even funny.
3. What was your favorite thing about the Season 6 premiere?
Chuck and Serena's actions and lines.
4. How did the Chair sex scene rank among their past dalliances?
It was their most graphic. But it doesn't exactly make it the hottest? My favorite part was Chuck saying "What's the rush, we have all the time in the world." Then they grinned at each other while Blair climbed on top of him.
5. More ridiculous, Chuck's outfits or Dan's hair?
Dan looked really hot! So I'm going with Chuck's suit, but I still love his outrageous clothing.
6. Better slap of Dan: Blair's or Serena's?
Serena's. That slap was longed for by fans just as much as we longed for Chair sex.
7. Shadiest new character: Amira, Sage or Steven?
Amira. I don't know who she's working for.
8. Who the heck is Gossip Girl?!

I'm beginning to think 10 episodes is not enough to salvage the wreck of last season. Not enough for Gossip Girl to end on a really good note. The keeping of Chuck and Blair apart until the big finish is contrived and takes away from it.

Love how Dan is so ridiculous that he is standing there lecturing blair but lying as he is doing it.

Gossip Girl Season 6 Episode 1 Quotes

[to Blair] In the past, I blamed my mistakes on you - Bart was right on that count; it's the boy that blames the girl, not the man. And that's what I want to be with you.

Chuck

Georgina: He's Protestant. I do my best work with Catholics.
Chuck: Thank God I'm an atheist.
