Shonda Rhimes Speaks on Shocking Grey's Anatomy Death

by at . Comments

WARNING: Turn back now if you haven't seen the Grey's Anatomy season finale.

After the controversial and shocking death of a fan favorite, creator Shonda Rhimes is weighing in on the decision to bid that character farewell ... along with another doctor who also left town.

"Flight" rocked longtime fans of the ABC drama to the core, perhaps even more than past years. A beloved character meeting a gruesome, horrible and absolutely shocking death will do that.

"They're not really gone for good, are they?", more than a few fans likely asked.

But they are. Rhimes released a statement via Twitter after the episode, saying she's as sad as you are about what happened. Read it below, then comment with your take on her remarks:

Mark Breaking Down

WARNING. IF YOU HAVE NOT YET WATCHED THE SEASON 8 GREY'S ANATOMY FINALE, DO NOT READ THIS SUPER-LONG TWEET. Okay? Seriously. Last chance...

Okay. Callie said it best tonight: Life changes in an instant. Turns on a dime.

This finale was incredibly hard to write. I did not enjoy it. It made me sick and it made me sad. We end the season not knowing ANYTHING about the future. Except for two things.

We know we are definitely saying goodbye to two of my favorite people: Chyler Leigh (Lexie) and Kim Raver (Teddy).

I know this season's finale had some surprises for viewers and the exit of Kim Raver was one of the big ones. But Kim's series option was up and she was ready to give Teddy Altman a much-needed vacation.

It's been a pleasure working with someone as talented and funny and kind as Kim; everyone is going to miss her terribly. I like to imagine that Teddy is still out there in the Grey's Anatomy universe, running Army Medical Command and building a new life.

I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey.

She was an important member of my Grey's family. This was not an easy decision. But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end.

As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future. I'd write more but I'm honestly too sad. I don't like life changing in an instant and turning on a dime.

Thanks for watching Season 8. We are, as always, grateful that you joined us for the ride."

As others have said before me, I sincerely hope that the show comes back in September with everyone still in the woods and we get to see the rescue and the reactions of those back in Seattle. And, as much as I love Mark Sloan, I think he might need to leave Seattle, dead or alive. I can't see a decent storyline for him without Lexie. Not with Callie and definitely not with Julia. How do you go back to someone who supposedly has feelings for you and tell her that the love of your life just died in the woods and nah, you're not ready to have kids with her just yet. Maybe later? While Julia has gotten a little creepy with this whole testing fertility levels to determine optimal times to get pregnant, without discussing it firsthand with Mark, that should be a bit much even for her.

I havent recovered from George's death and now Lexie. Its too much Shonda.

im so sad i feel like this could be the begging of the end their losing all their people and unless they bring some new ones in i feel like they could possibly let the show end on this sad and ridiculous note. I have followed this show religiously form the begging and im really sad about this finale. What could they do to turn it around, to keep viewers happy I mean honestly. Shonda is brilliant so i know they are capable. I just hope I can continue to love it and not resent them taking all of our favorite characters away. Because seriously if Derek would have died I would have turned my t.v off n vow never to watch it again!!!!!!

T and Kimski: There is such a thing as respect for the fans who made a show what it is and Shonda has completely blown off the Mark and Lexie fans for 2-3 years now. There has been NO respect for those fans at all. She has fed us one bold-faced lie after another and we are sick of it. She has earned every name she has been called. As for the decision being both Chyler's and Shonda's think back to earlier in the season when there was talk about Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey possibly not returning. Chyler Leigh said back then that if it meant she was the "Grey" in "Grey's Anatomy' she would be happy to step up and take that on. Now, all of a sudden, she agreed to having her character killed off? If you believe that, there is a beach house for each one of you, and anyone who agrees with you, in the Louisiana swamp with your respective names on it. Finally, Shonda may write this shit but that doesn't mean she gets to do what she damn well pleases. TV shows are like any other product. The consumer, meaning us - the fans - ultimately decide what stays on by watching. Viewership = ratings = advertising money = air time = ongoing series. If a product doesn't sell, or if a show isn't watched, you lose viewers which loses ratings which loses "rank" which ultimately cancels the show. As for Shonda having heard this before, take a look at the ratings. GA isn't the powerhouse it used to be. It has been steadily losing viewers, especially the last couple of years when it became the Callie and Arizona show. Shonda strung along the Mark and Lexie fans and we have finally had enough of it. When a writer shows no regard for the fan bases that have made a show successful it isn't long after that people quit - and this is that moment for Grey's.

It really broke my heart to see Lexie die, but in a way Mark finally got what he deserved. How many years has Mark known Lexie? There was so much time for him to tell her that he loves her, but he chose to go meet other people. Although i am a reeally big fan of Mark and Lexie I agree that this episode proved to express some real life lessons; you don't always get to be with the one you love, and sometimes love comes too late. Overall amazing episode...I am excited to see what the future holds for all our Grey's characters :)

Okay maybe I can. I have one more thing to say lol.
I loved Lexie's role since day one. She was a COMPLETE character who still had a lot show material- potential we could look forward to; and I mean that apart from her relationship to Mark.
She's gonna be missed a lot. And all I can say is that she better get the proper grief and mourning she deserves.

Serenajo: I think we are ALL well aware that it is a Show. But I have to make right ur wrong and say that it's not JUST a show, and that we have every right to express ourselves, even to Shonda. After all, the show is what it is because of US, the fans. (true, loyal ones). Shonda should know better by now.
I really believe (or hope) she reads what we have to say, 'cause after all that's how she gets to have a true feedback from her work. The ratings by themself mean very little. But I seriously suspect that for next season they're gonna drop. We're pissed Shonda. Im not going to call you names like others 'cause there's no point in doing that but you should know that most of us are REALLY pissed. I mean...seriously? I can't even begin to discuss the Mark-Lexie thing, that'd just make me cry again. But on top of everything, was it really necessary for Lexie to die in the very first minutes?? For her and Meredith not have a proper good-bye? I just.. can't keep talking. I loved Lexie's role since day one. We're gonna (if keep watching nxt season) be missing out on a lot because she represented so much; she was so much apart from her relationship with Mark.

I do agree with you people, they have to bring Lexy back, she belongs to mark, if not it would make the series less fun.. we have all been wailting for Lexi and Mark to be a couple... To let her die is to easy.. Norway wants her back :) PLEASE

This episode, from the beggining could not be good for me:
Three of my favorite characters (Lexie, Yang and Arizona) were fighting for their lives, and one would die. Teddy was 'fired' by the bastard that is Owen, and Mark was grieving... This finale was one of the most shocking ones.
