Scandal Review: Worlds Collide

by at . Comments

Kerry Washington promised in our interview that the Scandal season finale would bring it. And "Grant For the People" certainly did. Consider my jaw sufficiently dropped and my mind officially blown.

I can't tell you how glad I am that this show was picked up for a second season. Seven episodes is simply not enough of such an awesome series.

Olivia & Cyrus Work Together

This was a night of masterful storytelling. Things came together and characters fell apart beautifully.

Quinn as a client was a perfect intersection of the show's usual format of two stories. Quinn needed her secret identity to stay hidden, so she called Olivia instead of 911 after Gideon bled out all over his rug. Olivia, despite her team's protests, demanded that Quinn was a client and she would be treated like one. The team's reluctance to clean the crime scene, followed by its meticulous scrubbing, indicates that maybe this isn't their first time doing something like this. They knew exactly what they were doing: protecting a client at the cost of being able to prosecute the real criminal.

But still, they did it. Because those are the lengths to which Olivia will go when someone needs her help.

Olivia's professional and personal lives collided as she had to save an employee and her lover from Billy Chambers. He killed Gideon and then torpedoed the Fitz' presidency by telling the media about the President's affair with Amanda Tanner and leaking the tape, leaving Cyrus and Olivia to do the impossible one more time. The choices left to Fitz after it looked that they would be unsuccessful were so grim I felt bad for him.

He could lie, but he won't do that. Olivia could tell the media that she's the woman on the tape, but that just makes him look worse. Or he could resign and they could have a normal life. Together. He could have the life he wants with the woman he loves. (For the full line, check out the Scandal quotes page.)

In that moment, I hoped he would resign and the two of them would ride off into the sunset. They deserve a normal life together. We're conditioned not to root for infidelity, but there I was, excited that these two could have a happily ever after. But Cyrus and Stephen had to meddle and tell Olivia 1) Fitz was born to be a leader and 2) this is basically her fault. And while both of those may be true, sort of, when she choked out "Normal is overrated" to Stephen I felt so bad for her, almost broken.

And then she was even gracious enough to save Billy Chambers from Huck. Sort of.

Huck, after promising not to kill Billy, used a technicality to try and get rid of the snake. And that technicality--Charlie, the CIA operative Huck tortured for information about Amanda Tanner--was in Cyrus' pocket the whole time.

Did you catch that? Cyrus Beene was behind Amanda Tanner's murder.

Or he was working with Billy Chambers. Or they were both out to have the girl murdered. And how does the First Lady figure in?

It's clear that she knew the President had an affair with Amanda Tanner. She had the audacity to blame Olivia for it. And then she swept in and saved the day by saying that she was the woman on the tape and that she and the President are expecting a new baby. The First Lady has no scruples! None at all! Fitz and Olivia essentially breaking up after hope had been so high earlier in the day was heartbreaking. Knowing that the entire story was likely Olivia's idea made it worse.

She's willing to give up everything for Fitz. She'll even give him up.

With that, season one is done, and the biggest question remaining of the season is "Who is Quinn Perkins really?" And it's not a question to which we got an answer. I suppose they had to save something for season two. I know that between that question and the Cyrus reveal, I'm eager for September.

Were you shocked to find out that Cyrus was behind Amanda Tanner's death? Do you think we've seen the last of Billy Chambers? What did you think of tonight's finale?

and rest of actual President.
- A Criminal - a terrorist? No way by the way David acted It must be something the other know by hearing her real name, cause nobody seemed to know her face. What confuses me that a Laurie send her to an job interview she seemed she had not applied to and it also seemed she had no other job before, cause she walked straight from the bar into working with Olivia…. she seemed to know her more by reputation than as a person, it also seemed not to be the case for Olivia, it seems she brought her in for a different reason like she was a client all along but did not know it…

part III I do not hate Mellie, everybody needs something if it not love many people stick with substitutes like their positions. If he would have resigned she would have lost everything and who can blame her to fight at least a bit dirty. To bring in a fake miscarriage is cold and calculating, you could see her deciding it very rationally.
From this point I could see her working with Cy on the Amanda thing.
Every Character has so much potential and tons of stories to tell!
About Quinn, not sure who she is, she can not be a bad guy otherwise I do not think David would have brought her back to Olivia, he would have booked her and thrown the key away, Whatever he learned I think he knew she needs protection one she does not get at a police station and not from one of the agencies looking for her.
- So if she was in witness protection, why would she need protection from a non official side?
- She much to old to be the daughter of Sally who had the abortion
- Also to old to be the daughter of actual President.
- A Criminal - a terrorist? No way by the way David acted
It must be something the other know by hearing her real name, cause nobody seemed to know her face. part II Anyway enough rambling.
I like all the twists and turns they even started in the first show, when Olivia pulled the Baby out of that box I was like wtf?
Everybody is passionate whit a great casting, to have a female black lead character is simply great and to have her to be the fixer for a Republican President who is in love with her and she with him is such a great set up. Not sure if he would be a Democrat that if would be more likely to get a divorce and be able to marry again while in office? I am not from the US and I would never judge my leader by his / her personal life in that way. I mean if they are unhappy they should have the same option than anybody else, who gets fired if they divorce? Okay if you are married to your boss in the first place, but even this is not always the case ;).

Well somewhere I think I already posted a comment, but after this would have been the first for a signed in user I fear did something wrong, cause I could not find it. If it is still somewhere please bear with me if you read the same lines or at least similar ones ;) I love this show, I think it is one of the best Dramas out there at them moment if not the best.
I was hooked from the first moment, I had no idea who Shonda (spelling?) was before I saw the show and this was my luck because otherwise I may hade never watched it at all. My friend love GA and PP, but after what she tells me I do not even feel a little bit curious to take a peek.

Karen, I don't recall any significant clues. I think a friend of Quinn's (named Lori, I think?) set up the "interview" with Harrison in the first episode, so maybe that same friend hired Olivia Pope to look after her. The white house investigator mentioned that Quinn was an associate at a prestigious law firm prior to working for Olivia. I'm not sure how that firm hired her if she didn't "exist" prior to that job. Wouldn't they have needed references? Aside from seeming completely clueless, the only other weird thing was that she was sleeping at the office when "El General" came by in the morning. So maybe she never goes home?

I know i am probably the LAST on earth to watch the finale, but anyway....
They had me screaming in front of my tv. lol
NOOOOO! i want asap to know WHO Quinn really is! Damn, this is KILLING me! I can´t believe we have to wait to find out.
Awesome show! Watching the VP codly disown her biggest fan, the real question is: when it all comes down to one, who´s hide will you save?

So who do you guys think Quinn Perkins really is? In a previous episode she told Amanda that she was in trouble once and didn't have someone like Oliva to turn to. Then in this episode David said that at least half a dozen agencies were looking for her. Are ther any other clues?

When Fitz said he would resign and be with Olivia my heart broke as they kissed, because I knew that there was NO WAY this series was going to allow that. And I also no very angry because of it. The show has just begun there was no way that was happening....the way they changed it made me even more upset. I hope when Fitz gets over being angry at Olivia that he will come to understand her sacrifice. Hers is a lot greater than the First Lady's. As for Cyrus, the series is making me crazy with hating him, loving him, then hating him again. No way does a murderer deserve a baby!! Since Cyrus investigated the team and could not find anything on Quinn beyond a few years ago...my thoughts were that she was in witness protection or something like that, but with this series she could be the first Alien to survive a landing on the planet! I love this show and cannot wait until September to see what happens next. I preordered the DVD a week ago. I am a fan fanatic. This is the best show on TV and I want to see more of the cast out promoting it. There has to be a way for Fitz and Liv to find some happiness eventually or I will go crazy.

Scandal Season 1 Episode 7 Quotes

I'm sorry if the girl you hired, the girl you mentored, the girl you brought in to save the day, your girl, fell in love with me. That must really eat at you, Cy.

Fitz

You tell me to go to war with Olivia Pope and then you spend the night with her. Are you out of your mind?
