Private Practice Review: Unicorn Baby

by at . Comments

Wow. Let’s all together take a deep breath and sigh in relief for two reasons.

First, that was one heck of a season finale! Seriously, talk about intense. Secondly, we really ought to celebrate news of the renewal of Private Practice together. Although we can’t actually high five, rest assured that I’m just as enthused as you are to know we’ll see our favorite doctors once again.

Sam and Amelia

"Gone, Baby, Gone" mainly focused on Amelia going into labor. The Seaside Wellness doctors were at odds after all learning about Amelia’s controversial decision regarding her child's organs. The doctors questioned whether what Amelia wanted was actually murder and if it was ethical.

At first, I felt like what Amelia wanted was just what needed to be done. However, I slowly understood that what I thought appeared to be clearly black and white was indeed a very gray area. Nevertheless, I thought that Amelia’s choice was brave and amazing as her “unicorn baby” was very much a miracle.

When Amelia held her child and had only a couple of seconds to decide what to do next, I simply couldn’t hold the tears back. I thought to myself how incredibly difficult it must be and realized how incredibly strong she has been as she’s overcome such a great deal throughout this season.

I’ve said it before and I need to say it again: Caterina Scorsone was absolutely fantastic tonight. Every ounce of her pain and angst was perfectly expressed. This girl needs to totally be honored for her work.

And Baby Makes Three?

Elsewhere: There was lots of touching, making out and even more with Jaddison this week. However, as we all know, nothing ever comes easy for our girl, Addie. In fact, Sam definitely through a wrench into Addie’s new plans with Jake by professing his love for her and even proposing. Where did that come from?!?

Sure, it was nice that he finally manned up and decided to fight for her, but I’m with Addie. She responded to his rant by saying it was simply too little and too late. However, with Sam claiming he was all in and Jake on his way with flowers and Chinese food, we were left not knowing who she chose.

Who would you like to see Addison pick? I, for one, still want her to choose neither. She’s hardly ever been truly single and I hope she chooses only Henry. The men can wait.

Meanwhile, Charlotte and Cooper shared some incredible scenes as usual. It’s evident that their love has never been stronger than ever. Every scene with Mason was also perfect, and I just love their family dynamic. I am really looking forward to what happens next for this family. Maybe Charlotte will be pregnant soon enough.

Thanks to the recklessly annoying Pete, there won’t be a Violet Annoyance Scale this week. Though he finally realized that he needed to cooperate and do whatever it takes to get back to his family, I hated how stubborn he was and thought he was absolutely ridiculous when he told Violet to just tell Lucas the truth about his whereabouts. Seriously? If that type of behavior persists, we might have to consider a Pete Annoyance Scale.

Other Memorable Moments

  • Sheldon and Amelia finally made up. They really are best friends, aren’t they?
  • As Cooper was speaking to Pete about stepping up and being a parent and husband first, I couldn’t help but to be so proud of Cooper. He’s come such a long way.
  • How many of you smiled when Mason asked Charlotte if he could call her “Mama” the way that she calls her mother?

Well, TV Fanatics, it’s been a pleasure. See you next season! Be sure to hit the comments to share your predictions for next season. Also, don’t forget to return later this week to chime in on our Private Practice Round Table.

Great episode to end the season. Terrible final scene of the proposal, why cant they just let it go? Hopes for next season:
1) Charlotte and Cooper remain happy
2) Amelia grieves for her baby then gets some happiness in her life, whatever form that may take. And above all else
3) Sheldon finally gets a storyline

Amelia/Sheldon-So glad they made up. They have been a sob-fest for me lately! Charlotte/Mason/Cooper-By far my favorite people in the show now. Water works galore after Mason said Momma! OMG so sweet. @Christina Tran - A preggers Charlotte would be AWESOME! I'm giggling just thinking about it. They have to have this in store for her, it's just too good to pass up. Major congrats to the cast on the acting. Strong episode. I just wish they would make one where I wasn't constantly crying or horribly depressed after the ep. I have to watch this show before all my others so I can end my night on something happy! It ends sad waaaaaay too often.

On the other stuff- P&V-glad he decided to actually do right by his family but seriously I agree their storyline is the worst. Well, almost... Addison/J/S- UGH!!! Can we PLEASE drop the Sam part of this? He flat out said over and over and over again he didn't want to be a parent. This is not an issue to compromise on! You either jump full in with a child or not. (Which is why I have waited so long to have a baby, I was never sure I wanted one until now) But him deciding at the last possible second(too late I think) that he wants to do this? Jake has been this steady person by Addison the whole season. Why can't Addison get a steady amazing guy for once? (Sorry Sam selfish & childish attitudes for most of this season have put him on my permanent ignore list) I hope Addison actually says slow down to Jake and goodbye Sam. She needs to just chill with little Henry for awhile and get used to being a mom. @Elizabeth - Um did you notice that they did actually say throughout this episode that it was NOT legal to do yet because the medical community hadn't agreed what constitutes life with babies like this? They didn't ignore this AT ALL. Everyone wanted to abide by Amelia's wishes that her baby not be born and die in vain. In the end Charlotte ignored the lawyers and told them to go ahead. But if you were watching it seemed that the baby would have died quickly anyway because he went into respiratory distress almost immediately. This seemed to be a case where the baby would have died very soon after birth. ***To be clear, I'm not siding with anyone on the issue because that's a whole other can of worms I don't want to touch. I just wanted to make it clear that they didn't fudge the details on the legalities of it. They just chose to go ahead anyway.***

@D.Howe - Thanks for reciprocating the high five. I honestly forgot about the days when Pete was considered hot and mysterious. Gone were those days! Now, when I think about Violet, I think about Pete... vice versa. @DeAnn - Trust me when I say I'm always a little down when there's just no room for a VAS. Here's to hoping next season's reviews all include a skyrocketing VAS (or seemingly a PAS) every week!

Dhowe

Oh, and Pete and Violet need to go. Like right now. Remember the days of PP when Pete was the hot mysterious guy that kissed Addison in the stairwell?? *rolls eyes*

Dhowe

wow... I'm high fiving you Christina Tran! I can hardly wait for next season because this episode was FANTASTIC. Caterina Scorsone, much like Sandra Oh from Grey's anatomy absolutely deserve AT LEAST an Emmy nod. Her pain was almost unbearable for me, and I've never been pregnant! Intense to say the least... Elsewhere, I'm over the Sam/Jake/Addison triangle. Honestly, let Addie be happy for once! She's always torn, even from her days on Grey's. But if I had to predict, she's going to choose Sam and Jake is going to leave the practice. Which would be really sad because he's so nice to look at. UGH. BTW, that little Henry is the cutest baby in the world. Do you see his chubby little cheeks?!!?! I also cried when Mason said he wants to call Charlotte "mama". I think I cried the entire episode. Simply well done and this show deserves some well warranted recognition. Can't wait for next season!! Is it fall yet? :(

Christinatran

@PP_Fan - Thanks for the kind words. Now, to answer your question, I'd love for the next season to be entirely unpredictable. I think Private Practice is at its best when it delivers surprising storylines and unforeseen events. Furthermore, I would love for the doctors at Seaside Wellness to face actual consequences (hi Pete) for acting based on feelings rather than abiding by the law. Like another person said, this is a TV show, but I've become bothered more so lately that the doctors get away with murder - literally - ALL the time and it's a become a common thing with Addie always saving the day. As for a CharCoop baby, I'd love nothing more than for that to happen next season. In my exclusive interview with KaDee Strickland, she said exactly the same thing. They are my favorite couple and Charlotte is my favorite character. It would certainly be entertaining to see Charlotte as a pregnant mommy.

This show was beautiful. I love Charlotte and Cooper and Mason. Loved that he wanted to call her Mama. I felt for Amelia, the story was amazing and I am loving Sheldon and Amelia. As for Sam and Addie and Jake, not sure because Sam was such a jerk to her. Pete and his wife are my least favorite on the show. They need to leave . Love the show

I thought that Addie had clearly chosen Sam, not Jake. I, for one, was annoyed. How can such an accomplished woman be so stupid when it comes to matters of the heart. If she ends up with Sam, so ends my watching this show. It is repetitive and redundant and I refuse to believe that Sam is her soulmate. He is just too selfish!!!
