Castle Season Finale Review: All I Want Is You

by at . Comments

Wow. That pretty much sums up the Season Four finale of Castle. Fans were promised a great hour, and the series absolutely delivered. Now that I have caught my breath, let’s discuss “Always."

There were tears, smiles and one very hot and heavy hookup.

Car Investigation

Time To Move On. Alexis graduated high school and delivered a truly beautiful Valedictorian speech. She provided some insight on how, although she is excited to move forward, she is scared to move on. Truer words were never said for how Castle was feeling at the moment.

Twisted Ties. So a homicide that Beckett was assigned to gave her the lead she had been waiting on for a year. After the late Captain Montgomery’s house was broken into, things just didn’t seem right. Files were stolen on his cases and you had to know it was related to the Beckett girls.

Castle pleaded with Beckett to back off of the case and finally admitted to her that he has had information about it and she needed to stay away... or she would be killed. This also led to one of the best Castle quotes of all time.

Every morning I bring you a cup of coffee, just so I can see a smile on your face. Because I think you are the most remarkable, maddening, challenging, frustrating, person I've ever met. And I love you Kate, and if that means anything to you, if you care about me at all, just don't do this. | permalink
Coffee Talking

Of course Beckett was pissed that Castle had kept this from her. How could she not be? Her driving force for years has been to find her mother’s killer. The past year she has been focused on finding her shooter. She goes to work every day putting herself in harm's way, wondering who tried to kill her. She was bound to be angry.

This led to Castle dropping out of the case. Kate and Javi decided to move forward, with Ryan unsure of why they are keeping Gates out of it. Up until this moment in the hour, I had been thinking to myself: what is the point of Gates? We were introduced to this tough Captain after we lost Roy. But her role is so minor. She hardly makes appearances, unlike Montgomery who played an active role in pretty much every episode.

Information led Beckett and Espo to a hotel room where they were attacked by Cole Maddox, a link in their case. After an amazing fight scene, he was gone. That is, until he showed up at the infamous “Mr. Smith’s” place to demand the files so he can put “Kate Beckett in the ground for good.” Looks like we have someone new to focus on next season, as well as putting a face to the voice of Mr. Smith.

You have to love how hardcore Esposito is. He was having Beckett’s back, no matter the cost. And it cost him. Gates laid the smack down and put both detectives on leave. It doesn’t make too much of a difference to Beckett, who decided to resign instead. Javi is now pissed at Ryan for going to Gates. Could our favorite bromance be over?

The Moment Caskett Fans Have Been Waiting For. The episode could have been titled “Finally” for several reasons. We finally put a face to Mr. Smith, moved higher up the chain of who is after Beckett, Alexis graduated - and Beckett made her move towards Castle.

There were two moments early in the episode that made me excited:

  1. Kate held Castle’s hand and agreed to have a movie night with him. To me, that was enough because that was all I expected to get. Little did I know, things were about to finally move forward.
  2. After four seasons, Beckett gave into her feelings and went to Castle. Looking insanely hot and drenched from the rain, Beckett made her move. The knock on the door was enough to get the heart beating. What came next? Even more hot than Kate in her rain-soaked clothes. The two finally hooked up!

So Castle fans, what did you think of the much anticipated event? Was it everything you wanted and more? The smiles on their faces said it all. It must be noted the great skills that were displayed tonight. Nathan Fillion, one who is known for being able to act with just a look, put out so much emotion. It was impressive. What else was impressive? Stana Katic’s fight scene on the roof. Seriously, kudos to both actors for bringing it in the finale.

A Priest on Castle

Things To Think About:

  • Who is Cole Maddox? How big of a role will he play next season?
  • Will Kate go back to the precinct or is her resignation for good?
  • Can Javi and Ryan make up?
  • Will Mr. Smith come forward to help Kate?
  • Alexis is heading to college, will we see more or less of her?
  • And the big question - what will happen next for Kate Beckett and Rick Castle? Is a relationship in their future?
  • Just a minute of Lanie once again.
  • How much do you miss Captain Montgomery?
Castle Season 4 Finale Scene
So TV Fanatics, Season Four of Castle has ended. It was a solid years, with a few ups and downs, but an enjoyable ride all the way through. We have all summer to think about the Caskett hook up and our new villain, Cole Maddox.

September will be here before we know it. See you back here, same time, same place, in the fall.

Kudos to Andrew Marlowe and his writing staff. I have watched this show progress since season one and it has only grown stronger. It is such great story telling. If one watches the episodes consecutively and in a marathon like setting, one can see the gradual emergence of a plan for the story. I am really relishing where next season will take us. The actors were in their best form for this episode. I thought it was Nathan's best performance this season and Stana has had several very powerful episodes but she was beautiful, passionate, and true to her character in this one. Thank you, Mr. Marlowe and the cast of Castle for such an outstanding episode. The scene when Beckett comes to Castle's door showed so many emotions in both characters and was done very tastefully, passionately, and lovingly. What a gift for us fans.
I don't know why this show doesn't receive more accolades such as some Emmy noms. You don't get better writing and acting than this. Stana has some outstanding performances this season; I haven't seen any better than "Kill Shot" in other shows. The cast is well suited for each other and the program, and seemingly have great chemistry. Each character is essential to what we love about “Castle.
I can't even imagine ABC not renewing because this show will only continue to get better and it is pretty darn great now. The show has been in the top 10 according to TV Guide several weeks. Thanks again for some top of the line entertainment. I will be anticipating next season eagerly while I watch the series over again this summer.

karkar: I'm sure it was not your intention, but you just accidentally gave away a spoiler to those of us reading "Heat Rises." :-O I will anxiously anticipate Season 5 with the knowledge that those who predict a Moonlighting-like fall for this show will be proven wrong, because they have no idea how much care Andrew Marlowe and company respect these characters...

Thank you Mr.Marlowe and wife!!! Castle and Beckett did the deed! I never expected that. The time was right and done in good taste. (PG13) Im Susan Sullivans age and I sure enjoyed their love scene. Hand in hand going off to his bedroom, loved it. My lord, the way Beckett got sucker punched and beat up by Cole Maddox, how could she even think about making love! I guess Im really old. The writing and acting was a 10! Ive read all the Nikki Heat books and so often what happens in a Castle episode ends up in the books. In Heat Rises, Nikki is disgraced and suspended from the police dept. she had to hand over her shield and gun to her superiors. But because she solved the murder was reinstated(page 289) But the bad news it that Rook(her love interest like Castle) is shot and in a coma at the end of the book. I hope Castle doesnt get shot in the first episode of season 5.

Another "jump the shark" episode. It was a good series. Goodbye "Castle".

Question: Does anyone know if the release of Season 4 will be a "premium set?" It would be nice to have a little more context to a few of the scenes, like the finale scene with Castle and Beckett, it was edited close because of the time slot, I get it. Nevertheless, I would play extra just to have the full interaction between Beckett and Castle, before the fade. Please don't put a great scene in the deleted section, like in "season 3, with Castle and Kate's father." Great job again - Marlowe; this was truly a memorable season.

Castle was in *shock*. He's waited four years for words or actions like this from Kate Beckett. If you know this character at all then you know that he is very, VERY happy with this turn of events. (He just hasn't been on the journey with her that we have since their big blow-out.)

I love watching Castle, the creators and writing for the show is excellent. I just hope that the writers have a good plan for next season not to over kill the relationship with Castle and Beckett. The season finally was great and makes you want more, cant wait to see what happens next season.

Well Ausiello nailed it - the final scene was a blind item he did, and he said while the majority of the fanbase would be thrilled, there would be a few naysayers who thought it was too quick, but then there would always be complainers and haters. Good call Ausiello!

I thought this was a perfect, breath-taking end to the season. I disagree with Paula that we all know that KB will never give up on her mother's case. While the case will undoubtedly continue, there are so many revenge-driven cops on TV that push beyond where is rational. We have all been waiting for the moment when she realises that there is more to life. And it's right in front of her. I think it shows incredible wisdom in the writers and in the character to be able to drop it when the stakes become too high. Also, it makes perfect sense to me that Espo, being from a military background, would back his leader to the hilt. I like that he and Ryan differ there. And I totally felt the passion and the connection in the final scene with C&B, I thought it was played beautifully by both actors as was the entire ep. I LOVE that Castle didn't just jump right in without first checking where she was coming from and what was going on. That shows so much integrity on his part, it says that it is not just about the physical for him, it's about everything, it's about her. Thank you Marlowe for this gutsy, gorgeous finale to a show that continues to excite and surprise!
