Community Review: Doing It Like a Crossword

by at . Comments

Coming off the heels of last week's documentary parody, Community went back to its usual formula with "Origins of Vampire Mythology."

Indeed, TV's most dynamic duo is back to normal and what a relief it is! I consider Troy and Abed's relationship to be one of the strongest aspects of this show and without it we'd be bereft. When they were fighting it just threw Community off of its axis!

Annie and Troy

So what do I consider to be the usual formula for the study group? We'll start with Britta's total lack of judgement involving the male species. Throw in a little bit of Annie's mothering behavior getting duped by her naivete. And add a pinch of Jeff's ego sending him into a jealous fit, only to result with him giving a shockingly meaningful speech. And top it all off with the Dean sporting a new costume.

Pierce and Chang had the B-story, which is definitely the usual. We all know about the offscreen tension between Chevy Chase and Dan Harmon and I always sorta wonder if that seeps its way into the writing of the show. Am I thinking too much into it by saying that Pierce's need for a new best friend is kind of on par with his need/want for a new gig?

Jeff's speech was like the therapy Britta so desperately needed to hear. Despite enlisting Annie to keep her away from carnie ex-boyfriend Blade, played by Parks and Recreation's Kirk Fox, it was ultimately patriarch Jeff who as able to get through to her.

Even though Community is a fictional sitcom, it's always fallen on the side of intelligence with metaphorical storylines that truly tie into reality. Britta's incessant text messages and phone calls to a man who didn't really care was, let's face it, definitely real. How many friends have you seen sending a million messages to a suitor who was fairly ambivalent? Perhaps it's even something you've done when you're down and out.

There's something about a take it or leave it attitude, the "not giving a crap" persona, that sends some people into a frenzy. That's about all I'll say because Jeff Winger is just far better at random bursts of intelligent speeches than I am.

Then you have Troy, who knew that the second he was nice to Britta, she would go running. I'm glad to see the re-emergence of the Britta/Troy storyline. I feared it might have been swept under the rug for good.

Britta was comical tonight and my favorite quote of the episode was her spouting that she would end up "doing him like a crossword." Oh boy, check out more of this week's Community quotes and hit the comments. Were you happier with the show going back to it's regular format? Relieved by Troy and Abed acting like brothers again?

My favorite moment was the look of horror on Troy's, Abed's and Annie's faces when they watch Britta's cellphone ring and Troy exclaims, "She was born in the 80's, and she still uses her phone as a PHONE! WHAT DO WE DO?!?!" I enjoyed it, and I hope that in a future episode, Annie is able to do Jeff's naked chest like an unattended crossword fiend.

Childish gambino

didnt think it was that good or funny
and thought the ending was bit ham handed

Are you guys blind? did you see the final seconds of the episode? The smile that britta gave to troy (without him noticing) after annie point it out to her it was troy who text her, the smile that annie gave to jeff at the end (couple that with their locker room exchange) and finally the nod that troy gave to abed. I think they are going through with troy-britta and annie-jeff story line but which will mostly ends up with nothing as troy will always pick abed over girls and annie will never have to balls to confront jeff.

Yes, totally relieved to have Troy and Abed together in the moooornninnnng and every other time. :-) Kay - yes, loved "his shirt wasn't working" preceded by Annie's fairly subtle blissful glance at Jeff's naked chest. The moment that Troy took the phone and texted Britta was a very sweet moment and the most meaningful moment of the whole episode. I love Troy's sweetness, and his good instincts on how to help Britta. On the other hand, I hate the idea of the two of them together. I agree, Britta/Jeff makes sense. Annie's infatuation with Jeff is fine, but that's really all it should be. I can't see Troy with Britta, but I really felt his caring, and even some sadness, when he sent that text.

@abedswanson - Read the review - she said he's from Parks and Rec. I think this will be one of those episodes that fans either love or hate. I personally loved it. This episode had some of the funniest and most memorable quotes of any episode: "I need help reacting to something", "Annie, subdue your guest", "do him like a crossword"...and the throwback to "opposite of Batman". I also love any opportunity Jeff and Shirley have to hang out. The two of them make the perfect friends; they truly understand each other and are okay with each other's quirks. I also love any opportunity to see a shirtless Joel McHale. Have mercy...

I love the episode.
It showed some evolution for two messed up character Jeff and Britta, who might, after their insight, become more involved with someone who treats them well. Well in the case of Jeff it would have to be him treating the girl well. it was cute how they showed troy's feelings for Britta, and Annie's for Jeff. I only fear he is to self involved to get it or even appreciate it. He is so immature. Maybe Britta has more potential to grow up and be with Troy. It was a cute episode. Also, chang and piere made me laugh.

I don't like that storylines are much more about Britta than Annie. Lately it has only been Britta.

"Do him like a crossword." I'm DEFINITELY using that from now on. My other favourite line was from Abed: "Annie, subdue your guest!" And can someone PLEASE give Donald Glover an acting Emmy...please?? This episode was one of the most grounded ones that they've done, and I loved it. I thought it was funny, and I love the character exploration. I've always preferred the Jeff/Annie pairing; those two have way more chemistry between them than Jeff and Britta did. "Dean, why are you here?" Dean: "OUCH!!"

Community Season 3 Episode 15 Quotes

Why do you wanna know the secret to making a woman psycho?

Shirley [to Jeff]

No woman, none of us have to go to anyone. And the idea that we do is a mental illness we contracted from breath mint commercials and Sandra Bullock.
We can't keep going to each other until we learn to go to ourselves. Stop making our hatred of ourselves someone else's job and just stop hating ourselves.
