The Vampire Diaries Review: Burning Bridges

at . Comments

The Vampire Diaries asked its viewers to accept a lot in "Break on Through," not all of which flowed very naturally.

Let's start with the return of Sage. It wasn't exactly organic. First: how did she know Finn was freed from his casket?

Granted, she's 900 years old and clearly possesses certain powers that far exceeds those of the young (not even 160-year old!) Salvatores. But it becomes a dangerous line, a pretty severe writing crutch, when she can simply do and see anything she wants.

Rebekah and Sage

Second: Why did she and Damon suspect Rebekah was up to something? We've barely seen this Original since she and Klaus discovered the White Oak Tree secret in "All My Children." Was she really acting different? Was there any indication Damon should be suspicious?

Third: Finn? Really, Sage?!? This is the Original we know the least amount, making it difficult to really get invested in anything surrounding him or the fiery red-headed mentor of Damon's. It simply seemed random all around that Sage showed up... schemed to deceive Damon... and based all her machinations on love for another character we scarcely know.

Nothing involving Sage worked for me this week, which is saying a lot considering her presence resulted in a near threesome.

The storyline didn't serve Rebekah well, either. The Vampire Diaries has done a tremendous job creating depth to this (gorgeous!) character, but she came across as more pathetic than vulnerable here. I know, I know: it's Damon Salvatore. What woman would not jump at the chance to jump back into his bed? But she was really so willing despite the rivalry that clearly existed between her and Sage? With Sage right there? Looking on mischievously?!?

Can we give Rebekah some credit please? (SPOILER ALERT: At least she'll get her revenge next week.)

Elsewhere: There wasn't really a lot of movement on the Alaric front. Yes, we now know for sure he's one "accidental serial killer," as Damon so tactfully put it. And, yes, that counsel member hit list is sort of scary. But we're still left pretty much where we were a week ago: with Alaric as a murderer; wondering how the ring will affect Jeremy; and appreciative that Matt Davis is getting a shot in the spotlight.

The final line of the episode was even indicative of how the show has been treading water a bit recently: Let's go kill some Originals. We're on board with that battle, Damon. Trust me, I'm excited to see where this all goes. But wasn't that also the mission many weeks ago? Where have we really gone since then? And, honestly, why do they even want to kill the Originals anymore? They aren't even in Mystic Falls, for the most part, and haven't really done much in awhile.

Let's hope the concluding set of season three episodes stop spinning and start moving forward with the momentum that made us all embrace TVD from the outset.

What were the highlights of an overall mediocre installment? A number of nice character moments and exchanges. We had Bonnie embracing Elena; Caroline doing her best to convince Abby to stay, by invoking the memory of her father; Elena shedding quiet tears on the phone with Jeremy (great work in this scene by Nina Dobrev); and, best of all, Stefan realizing that he could overcome his blood lust, thanks to Elena.

You're gonna be okay, she told Meredith. But I somehow doubt the fallen doctor was the only person for whom this message was intended.

What did you think of the episode? Were you intrigued or bored by the appearance of Sage? Do you blame Rebekah for bedding Damon again? Do you care that Bonnie's mom left again? And where can we find Own it. Live it. Love it. bumper stickers?

The Sage storyline was forced and unnatural, and it just made Rebekah look pathetic after all the strength and depth they gave her.
Having Abby leave after all that felt like a cop out. Bringing her in was pretty much pointless.
I also don't like how they have magically turned Damon back into his old self. Stefan is just getting on my nerves, and so is Elena for going back to him. She is the only character in this show who is still the same as she was at the beginning of the series, and has remained that way throughout the ENTIRE three seasons. It's a little irritating that the main character is the only one who doesn't change.

Wow. Another ridiculous episode. Not interested in the Sage storyline at all. Hopefully she and Finn can live happily ever after...offscreen. Tired of seeing Stefan OD'ing on blood. We get it. He can't control himself. Elena calling to ask Bonnie for a favor was predictable. "Bonnie, I know that I've ruined your life and shouldn't have put Elijah's living death before Abby's, but could you just get over it and help Alaric? It's very important that all the men devoted to me stay alive". And the writers giving all of Bonnie's potential scenes to Caroline sucked even more. We got to see Caroline bonding with Abby. Caroline lecturing Jamie. Caroline dealing with Elena on Bonnie's behalf. Can't the writers actually hire someone who gives a crap bout Bonnie's character? Maybe Kat Graham should follow Matt Davis' lead and find a show that actually gives her better screen time.

Ya I'm really hoping to see more Delena moments. They should deffidently Kiss. And has anybody else noticed in season 1 and 2 the season finally Damon almost dies and kat. Or Elena ends up kissing him I hope the continue that.

I love the vampire diaries it's my favorite tv show

Rebekah's character is totally ruined. She was gonna LEAVE Klaus, KNOWING the consequences, for STEFAN. There was sooo much potential for Stebekah. Their backstory and chemistry all wasted. Remember that Rebekah is an original and for her to feel the way she did about Stefan knowing ALL the countless bachelors she's met is saying a lot. She was gonna abandon Klaus for him. SO TRUE! And another great example of a good storyline just being ignored / forgotten by the writers :-(
Until last year I couldn't wait for the next episode of TVD. But now it's just like "Yeah, well, you can also see it later..." I don't get it. What went wrong? It's all like a big puzzle missing the most important pieces.

The hiatuses ate annoying. The show has become choppy.
TVD has lost the one liner dialog that made season 2 fresh.
Candice Accola needs to be used more or she may get
Recruited into Kevin Williamson's show on Fox.

Julie plec is just an Overweight wannabe Goth who is slowly ruining the show.kevin williamson needs to come back a.s.a.p.

Your name I'd not Elena,Stefan, Damon and Caroline you might as well be demoted to guest star. Klaus I cannot take seriously as a villain anymore because he now acts like a spoiled brat who flirts with Caroline like off a bad romantic comedy.

This show is slowly swimming into jumping the shark territory, that is bad considering it's only in it's third season. The writing is terrible, there is Elena constant whining about how her life if bad even though you have two men who killed your best friend's mother to protect you. Damon moping around, throwing temper tantrums, Stefan was good up until Dangerous Liaisons, now he is going back to being boring. Caroline, is the only character that has had some good plot lines. The others are just getting scraps, for example Bonnie, this character has so much potential with the whole witch mythology and teenage girl aspect but the writers piss on it every single episodes. I have come learn that whatever comes out of Julie plec's mouth is just complete crap. Now I do not want compare shows, but look at Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the show is called Buffy, but all the characters have had their time to shine and good character development that kept people interested. Here it's obvious that if you are not Elena, stefan, Damon and Caroline, you might as well be demoted to guest star.

I love her as Sage...........GREAT acting. Terrible in Smallville though.
I love everyone else......... Joy

Ric, the world can't stop just because you're an accidental serial killer.

Take him out for martinis, feed him some chicken soup. Don't let him kill anyone.
