Hawaii Five-0 Review: Marching In

Kalele: Faith.

Welcome back to Hawaii Five-0, Ed Asner! The veteran actor is not the first to have appearance in the original series and then come on board 30 years later in the same role. However, he is the first one who we actually watched in both universes, as "Kalele" aired a clip from 1975.

Ed Asner on Hawaii Five-0

Beyond the depth that was added by the use of this flashback, Asner's portrayal of August March was very well done. I did not see him double crossing Angela at all. And it was really needed given that I had guessed from the outset that Angela had faked her own kidnapping.

Did anyone else catch the ever-so-slight change they made to the McGarrett lineage from the previous series to now? March said "There was a young officer named McGarrett who transported me to prison, I offered him 100 grand to help me." But in the original episode, McGarrett was a full detective, not a young officer, and Jack Lord was in his 50s at the time.

I'm okay with the change, though, given that Alex O'Loughlin was born in 1976, when Lord was 56 years old. I'm surprised they didn't play the original Steve McGarrett off as his grandfather. Especially given that William Sadler - who portrayed Jack McGarrett, Steve's father - was born in 1950 and it would have fit in the timeline.

Mary hasn't appearance since November - on the episode where they busted Kaleo (Jason Scott Lee) - and  then she turned up here and suddenly they have reason to go see Kaleo? It's either way to coincidental, or the writers need to expand their range when attempting to tie in earlier episodes from this series.

Finally, I have to admit that Captain Fryer has grown on me. Maybe Tom Sizemore has finally settled into the role or maybe I'm softening on him as he grows a little hair. Either way he had one of my favorite Hawaii Five-0 quotes this week.

What did everyone else think of the outing? Are there any other characters/actors from the original series you would like to see turn up?

I agree with amazingalex (yes miracles can happen). Terry O’Quinn or Lauren German won’t appear at all and the H5O team will just hear of Joe’s/Lori’s death. The only good thing about the final episode is Wo Fat. I love this guy because he is evil and cruel just like me right Kaydee LOL. Oh I almost forgot, martinelli I really hope it was just a spelling mistake and not a pun. Hugs and kisses to all kind girls here.

Lenkov wants fans constantly participate H5O forums and not lose interest now but his methods are cheap. There are better ways to keep your fans on their toes than killing your cast. I believe that Joe is the victim but if Lenkov doesn’t want a Lori return, this is an opportunity for him to end the Lori debate once and for all. Even if the victim is Joe I don’t agree with Lenkov’s methods and won’t be part of this poll thing.

@gaella - It's a possibility but season 1 ended with the governor killed, so to have the same ending again would be absolutely boring. They have to do better than that.

What about having the governor killed off (again!) It would be in the line of duty, he's not much of a character, and it would definitely cause the team to go nuts finding the culprit

@martinelli..that is pretty typical of shows to word spoilers in a way that you think you know what is gonna happen but then you find out it is something different. I dont for a second think any of the 4 are at danger. To me the whole ending of this season is gonna be about wo fat. For it to be about who he kills would not move this story forward at all. It has to be more then that. I think his connection to steve is gonna be a shocker.

I dont think the death of one of their own is the cliffhanger. I think it is going to be about what they find when they go after who did it. I believe a huge secret about wo fat or his actual connection to steve is gonna be the cliffhanger not the death in the line of duty. But that is just my opinion. The death is just a catalyst to the cliffhanger.

Rookie Blue is a Canadian show and successful too. Just finished filming season 3

@Zia...I absolutely agree with everything you said. I'll give an example of a show close to H50 that was very successful in Canada but failed because it lost its U.S. affiliate, Combat Hospital. Their is a long list of Canadian actors, actresses, producers and directors who have found success in the U.S., Peter Lenkov for one.

Grace Park signed for 4 season and Alex for 7.I think she can't break her contract. Also, when she decided to make this show, she knew that her job will take away from Canada but all is possible. I hope I am wrong because i adore Grace Park. @jschoi
Absolutely agree with you. Sure Delano will be back for a revenge...poor Kono I really think it being one of the core 4 will be died but a false died (if not I stop watching the show). I mean it will be an excellent cliffhanger until the next season...

I truly hope it's not Grace. H50 needs a woman and not ant woman. H50 needs Grace.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Episode 19 Quotes

Kono: The airline gave us her cell phone number, but it goes straight to voice mail.
Steve: That makes sense right? If she's been kidnapped.
Danny: You trying to convince us or yourself?
Steve: Maybe a little of both.
