Grey's Anatomy Review: Crossing The Line

by at . Comments

After what seems like a lifetime, Grey’s Anatomy returned with "One Step Too Far," an episode that proved this series can still bring the drama with the best of them.

The hour focused on pushing boundaries but knowing when you crossed the line.

The staff flirted with each other, Catherine Avery used another doctor as a spy on her son, Mark pushed Jackson to find fun; and most of these are innocent enough. But occasionally, they went too far.

Such as Owen dropping the bombshell on his suspecting wife. Let’s discuss.

Back to Neuro?

Uncle Phil! James Avery guest starred as a grieving husband and reminded us why his time on Fresh Prince of Bel Air was so enjoyable. The man can make you feel! Rebecca Hazelwood brought the sexy as Catherine Avery’s co-worker, and Summer Glau returned as Nurse Emily.

All three guests were pretty much awesome. Speaking of Nurse Emily...

Two Patients in Trouble

Can You Stop Screwing My Husband? Cristina was sure Owen was cheating on her with Emily. Most of us fans were positive that if Owen had strayed, it was with this girl, causing us to instantly hate her.

As soon as Emily admitted to flirting with Owen but promising she had never gone there, a little bit of disdain lifted. This is a well-written character and I don’t think I am alone in wanting her to stick around a while.

Then the bomb got dropped. Owen is a cheater! The Chief admitted to straying from his marriage, making our hate for Emily pass right on to him.

Introducing Emily caused us all to believe she was the other woman, but turns out there is someone else. Well played, Shonda, you definitely threw us off the trail.

These two have had some serious ups and downs and there isn’t really an easy way of fixing a broken marriage.

Glau on Grey's

Oh, Smashed Up Face? That was bad. The lightest moment from the episode came from our originals talking over lunch. These moments are too far and few between, much like the great scenes between Bailey and Richard.

Cristina calling Rebecca “smashed up face” was hilarious, and I have to admit, I let out a giggle.

Alex has not had the best luck with ladies and it looks like that is about to change. Intern Morgan is most definitely smitten with him. Giving him the relationship/saving complex with a patient has been done and this character deserves better. He needs a relationship with someone he doesn’t have to save and hopefully that can be Morgan.

Is she only interested because he is helping save her son or is it genuine? That is an answer we will have to find out before we can make a call on this budding relationship.

Richard in a Tux

Uh Oh, Grey’s. Derek having Mer back on his service did not go too smoothly.

Mer and Lexie caused damage on a patient that can’t be fixed. Who’s fault is this? My vote is on Derek. He never should have left them alone with his patient. Looks like Mer will be headed back to general surgery.

The Averys Get It Done. Catherine got her flirt on with Richard and made him feel like a man, all while inserting a new bladder they had built. Plus, she rocked that gown. Jackson finally got some action. Mark is going to be pleased.

Some Afterthoughts:

  • Richard really is a good man. No doubt about it.
  • Jackson should stop wearing scrubs and wear a tux every episode. That man is gorgeous!
  • Morgan wanting Alex to get in the picture - creepy or sweet? I can’t decide.
  • Quick appearances by Callie, Arizona, April, and Teddy. Let’s get these lovely ladies some more screen time.
Handsome Avery
All in all, a pretty great episode. We had to wait weeks for it and we are going to have to wait again for the next new episode. So while we go through so more Grey’s withdrawal, let’s discuss the episode.

Are Owen and Cristina over now that Owen is a cheater? Who did he cheat with? Should Alex hook up with his intern? When are we ever going to see Meredith and Derek’s dream house? How about predictions for the remainder of the season?

Until next time, TV Fanatics.

sookie00--I agree 100% with everything you wrote. I just finished watching some older episodes and the patients were way more involved in the story. I do think Shonda has to get rid of people so she can write real stories again instead of jump all over the place. I'm hoping that instead of them all totally disappearing some on the non-essential characters (like April, Avery, Sloan) are just made into recurring characters that aren't necessarily in each episode. Wouldn't enjoy it without Meredith, Christina, Arizona, Alex, and Callie but I could handle everyone else just appearing once in a while in exchange for good storylines. And I still don't think Owen is cheating with a person. I think the comment was metaphorical.

It's no news that Cristina has been a difficult person to have a relationship with. She hardly expresses any thoughts nor any commitments and demands everything in her ways. In fact I don't even understand why Burke and Owen would fall for her in the first place let along getting married with her. But still, Owen cheated! It may hurt to love Cristina but he hurt her in a real way. Hope he will make amends for it.

I can't be mad at him to be honest. When I try to be mad at him I have to think about what he's lost: his unborn child. In a way he is a grieving father. So everytime I see him I just want to hug him because noone else did. NOONE acknowledged his loss/pain. NOONE was there to hold HIS hand when his child died just in front of him. And I know that some people think that aborting a child does not mean that you kill a child. But for Owen it did mean that his child died in front of his eyes. Just think about that before you hate him.

Damn it, Owen. You don't cheat on someone who didn't want to get married but married you anyway because she loves you. You don't cheat on someone who bought a firehouse because you love it even though she didn't. You also don't cheat on someone just because she didn't want kids and you did. Cheating is horrible. It's damaging and damn it, it's cowardly to cheat on her than leave her. You're a coward. I hate any cheating storylines. I'm a daughter of a cheating father, it's something I'd always hate just like how my guy hates smoking because he lost his mom to lung cancer she contacted from second-hard smoke. I love Kevin McKidd and I love Owen but I hate this one. I still liked him when he choked Cristina. Shonda's doing another cheating storyline. It was as annoying as George and Izzie's storyline. Mark's cheating storylines, not so much...I kind of expect that from him but he's better now. Well, I'm looking forward to the next episode :)

I apologize for the repeated posts. I'm mad at Owen. A lot. You should have left her if you were just going to cheat on her.

I'm mad at Owen. You don't cheat on someone who didn't want to get married but married you anyway because she loves you. Sure, she was PTSD-ing and very scared at the time but damn it, Owen. She bought a firehouse you love even though she didn't like it. You can't cheat on her just because she doesn't want kids. Whoever it is...Teddy, April or whatever, I'm very mad at them. It can be April and if it is, I'll hate her again. I'm barely tolerating her. If it's Teddy, I hate her more. It can't be Bailey, not because Owen won't find her attractive, but because she would know it's wrong. She pointed out the trickiness of Webber's situation if he goes out with Avery's mom. She won't be someone's other woman. Lexie, what the hell? Meredith is hoping to boost her confidence. Mer can't come back to Neuro though she'd be perfect at it because Derek will always be looking over her shoulder. Outside Neuro, he trusts her as his wife...even when she's on another specialty but not on his. I found Avery's mom kind of annoying. She's acting like a cougar, she knows the Chief (I stil think Webber as Chief) is married, right? And Avery's good-looking but that girl is not the girl for him. It's cute how Mark wants him to get laid. But Eric Dane looks weird when he dyes his hair dark. He looks better when it's graying. But once again, damn it Owen. If you love her and it hurts too much to love her, leave her. Don't stay with her and betray her.

This episode was maddening. I hated the whole botched neuro surgery storyline. I know they were looking for something dramatic but I don't think that this did it. Meredith didn't even want to do neuro but he put her on his service, and of course it ended badly. Shes such a good surgeon and yet everytime it comes to neuro it seems shes making these stupid decisions which I completely don't even understand.
Owen and Christina...eww. I have never liked them as a couple. Christina used to be hardcore and I'm not saying she can't cry or fight for her marriage but I thought that is what Owen loved about her in the first place. She showed him who she was and he married her anyway so he can't a year or two down the road decide hey this isn't what I wanted. He already knew. He knew she didn't want kids and when she quit surgery he encouraged her to go back because that's who she is.
I thought mark and lexie were going to get back together but that doesn't seem like that's ever going to happen especially since he's talking about moving in with whatever her name is. Sorry but she is so unnecessary and has only been in what? two episodes so its weird to not even see their growth as a couple. Not like I want to but just saying
We need a good episode. A real one like in the earlier seasons.

I have so many issues with the episode that are an extension of issues with the season. I like the development of the nurse Emily and the move from Owen cheating with her to someone else. At first I couldnt believe that Owen would cheat because despite the fact that he made the decision to marry Cristina knowing that she was completely career orientated. It made me think of two things. firstly how he left his fiancee earlier in the series and is caught out by her father while he was dying in hospital. Also, how he, to an extent, tries to change Cristina like Burke did. Its like he ignored how she really was and imagined a different Cristina.Im usually a fan of both but right now I find it hard to like Owen because he got himself into his mess and doesnt have the decency to clean it up himself. I cant believe they would put Meredith back into Neuro just to have to fail again (bad storyline). The whole Morgan/Alex thing is creepy. Sick of having little/no real interactions between Callie and Arizona. Theu dont need drama like last season but at least show them happy, in love and as a family.

Sookie00

I thought it was a good episode, but once again I'll go back to the same things :
- Sick, awfully sick about Christina & Owen. Where is this going ? Owen cheating is out of character, according to me. And that storyline is really deeply deeply deeply BORING.
- The 27 year old lady unable to speak was the most interesting part of the episode, especially the actress that played so well that scared patient when she realizes what's going on.
- Don't see the point though in bringinb back Mer to Neuro if it's to make her mess up again.
- I will NEVER say it enough : there is not enough screen time about the patients, I miss the storylines from first seasons where we knew so much about patient's history and background and where it was hearbreaking.
- I like Morgan more and more, go get our Alex !
- I deeply miss Callie and Arizona.

Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Episode 17 Quotes

Alex: I felt bad that I had to sit with you all night so you didn't cry yourself to sleep over your sad premie.
Morgan: He has a brain bleed!

We're trained to be vigilant, to chase down the problem, to ask all the right questions, to find the root cause until we know exactly what it is and we confront it. It takes an extreme amount of caution or we can't overstep ourselves. We can create problems that don't exist.
