Castle Review: Sinning By Silence

by at . Comments

Wow. Now that is an example of what good television looks like. Castle aired"47 Seconds" this week, an episode that brought out a special intensity and seriousness. It was full of the usual twists and turns, but this one felt different. This one felt real.

So let’s do it. Time to discuss “47 Seconds."

The Case. A Wall Street protest was ended early with a bomb explosion caught on tape. Our super smart detectives were able to determine what happened in the minute before the explosion. First, how crazy is the technology that is used now? Using the GPS on cell phones is pretty nuts. It can seem a bit like an invasion of privacy, but when you think of all the ways it can be used for things like this, it’s pretty awesome.

There were several minor characters in this episode. My favorite was definitely a toss up between West Side Wally and Bobby Reyes Lopez. Anyone else recognize Lopez as Bobby Reyes from Friday Night Lights

Tim Guinee on Castle

Iron Gates is Back. Captain Gates made a big return - and by big, I mean appearing for more than a minute. This character has seriously grown since her first appearance. As a fan, there was no one that could replace Captain Montgomery. Gates’ tough guy attitude made it easy to hate her, but over the past several episodes, she has earned her screen time. Gates has become enjoyable, providing Beckett with another woman to look up to and a personality that is different than all of the others.

This case provided a great platform for Castle and Alexis to show their father/daughter relationship. Stepping back and watching Rick be a father is almost as fun as watching him be a cop writer.

Now if we could get the guys together again for a boys night outside of the precinct and see some BFF time between Lanie and Kate, it would be great.

I Remember Every Second Of It. Now to the biggest part of the episode for all of the shippers. After realizing that tomorrow is never promised, Rick decides to talk to Kate about his feelings. Just in time, he discovers that she has remembered everything from the shooting, including the infamous “I Love You."

So, where do we go from here? Obviously Castle is pissed, and rightfully so. He made a move and put his feelings out there. Although the timing wasn’t great, there has been plenty of time since then for Kate to admit that she knows. These two are close enough that Beckett is recognizing Castle is acting different.

Martha said it best. How can you work side by side with someone when your heart is crushed? You can’t. These two are going to have to figure it out. Time to move forward. I know the writers have said that there will be a time for this relationship and that it isn’t now, but a little movement needs to be made before it becomes stale.

Overall, another great episode from the Castle team. It was intense, enjoyable, and now has me counting the time until next week’s outing. What did you think, TV Fanatics?

Should Kate have admitted to Rick she heard his “I love you?” Is Castle rightfully angry? Should Alexis stop working at the morgue? Are you starting to like Gates more?

yep I've been in the exact same place Rick has been and I disappeared for 3 days consider what to do about the matter because the sparks would have flown if I'd confronted her about it right away.
I was, putting it mildly, completely pissed off. I always knew about her true feelings but I never had the hard evidence until a 10 second slip in a overheard conversation. It's those little slips that will get ya. LOL
We worked it out :)
So yeah I get it.
Everyone brings up moonlighting but there's tons of couples on TV that haven't destroyed their ratings.
In any case I would not be holding my breath for them to be together. Just yet.

Joyeful

And yes - a leading crime-fighting couple can TOTALLY work. Hart to Hart, Chuck, Lois & Clark...Moonlighting didn't work because Willis and Shepherd hated each other...

As someone who has been exactly where Castle is (or where he thinks he is, anyway), his reaction is spot on. Walking that line between anger, hurt, shame and feeling like the biggest fool on earth, but still trying to function. Not wanting to be petulant and lash out but not being able to stop yourself from getting one or two digs in...I totally get it. He'll eventually blow -it's not like Castle to keep quiet. But for now it's too fresh for him. And as for Castle being a hypocrite - bull. Beckett isn't dealing with Castle because she's emotionally stunted. Castle's keeping the secret to save her life - he's watched her die once, can't blame him for not wanting to go through that again. The two secrets aren't even comparable. I'm completely on Castle's side here LOL

Based on Andrew Marlowe's tease at PaleyFest earlier this month, Stana Katic's comments, and the promise of this episode, I expect that, by the end of this season, Castle and Beckett WILL know how each other feels. Does that mean they'll get together? One hopes. People tend to compare this show to "Moonlighting" -- and I'm reading "McMillan" and Hart to Hart" -- but I see this show more closely resembling "Remington Steele" (think about it). Both knew early on that there was a spark between them, but didn't really act on it. So, I know that formula of the show being relevant AFTER they finally get together can work. All I know is, if they leave this hanging after the May 7 ep? Houston, we have a problem...

I like this season, but have to agree with Keith Vlasak comments...

Interesting but not unexpected, now would be the time to bring in a new love interest for Castle. I always said that they would milk the whole Caskett thing until it bleeds but now it's just getting boring.
Alexis needs to be working in the morgue for some harshness of reality in life.
There's a huge difference in someone protecting a person from harm, saving her life and someone that's so emotionally closed off they can't admit to hearing "I love you".
Ricks pissed and I can't blame him. He'll prolly start finding reasons not to be around her now.
Oh the interruption thing? REALLY getting OLD!! As is the Sir thing.

I agree, you can only tease so long. It can be done, and like other storys, I rememeber McMillan and Wife, and Hart to Hart.. they were popular and highly watched. Loved the episode, and am looking forward to seeing what becomes. ANy one have ideas where this is headed?
I was thinking about it, and wonder if the distance between Castle and Beckett causes her to start over on her mothers death, and "the powers" that want to keep her away, kidnap Alexis, in exchange for Castle to hand over Kate. Cliff hanger, as Rick hugs Alexis, Kate whispers to Rick, she loves him!
any theorys?

I'm with Missa, watch The Thin Man. It CAN be done. These two are a great team and I think will be a great romantic couple as well...but you can only tease so long.

I love this show -- but was looking at an episode guide online and thinking that it has evolved. It's not at all the same show I started watching with episode 1. Remember the poker games? It seemed Castle was part of an old-boy network a lot more than now where the only time he's seen away from Beckett is with his mother and daughter. I guess, though, all shows change -- and the good ones, like Castle, change in ways we can continue to love and enjoy!

@andrea and those unfamiliar - comments are limited to 1000 characters. And I didn't figure out what was happening to my comments -- somebody, like this comment, said.
