The Vampire Diaries Review: Family Matters

at . Comments

I'm sorry. I'm still gonna need a minute...

I thought I'd be ready to write my review of "Bringing Out the Dead" by now. I thought my eyes had dried enough from the tears they shed over seeing Caroline Forbes lose her father - and that my heart had stopped racing from the shot of all Original family members standing side by side - but I was wrong. Talk amongst yourself for a few more moments please...

Klaus vs. Stefan

Okay. I think I can do it. But my goodness. The Vampire Diaries threw every conceivable emotion at us this week, didn't it?

Let's start with the raw pain of Caroline, who spent more time crying here than she did talking, proving once again that Candice Accola simply rocks and that even the strong veneer this character has built up since becoming a blood sucker is no match for the death of a parent. Especially not one as noble and loving as Bill Forbes.

You're strong, you're beautiful, you're good, he told his daughter before sacrificing himself for his beliefs, a truly impressive act. Can anyone out there comprehend doing such a thing? To not only die for your values, but to do so when you have it in your power to live... forever? Great work all around here by Accola and Jack Coleman as her father.

Elena came close to losing the person who has grown into her father, as well. Or at least her sort of unstable, funny uncle.

Alaric obviously isn't going anywhere, but he became the third council member to be staked, as The Vampire Diaries is making like Criminal Minds a bit these days - and I love it! It can be confusing sometimes to keep track of all the characters that come and go, all the yarns that are spun and new tales that are told. But, come on, who doesn't embrace a good ol' fashioned murder mystery?!?

Right now, there's only one real suspect, but no way is the killer Meredith Fell. At least not acting on her own. She'd have removed Alaric's ring before stabbing him, wouldn't she have? Not to mention that pesky alibi of surgery.

The bad doctor has to be involved in some way, but I say the culprit actually doing the evil deeds is someone we haven't met yet.

Then we come to the dinner every female viewer probably wished they could have attended. Elijah, Klaus, Damon, Stefan. Two sets of brothers, multiple sets of agendas, one thing in common: the shared love for a doppleganger. I didn't see that story abut Tatia coming. Can Nina Dobrev really take on a third role? (Or do we no longer count Katherine as a role any longer, just as a plot device?) When might we meet the original Petrova?

And what about that offer Klaus made to Stefan and Damon? He'll protect Elena forever? She can marry Matt, live a normal life? Granted, she should likely get a say in this plan, but what about it, Salvatores? If you truly love Elena - as you admitted to each other later in the episode - you must admit that you are not her safest options. She's better than both of you, right, Stefan? Doesn't she deserve to be free of this madness?

She compelled Jeremy for his own good. She did it out of love. Should the brother consider the same act now?

Finally, of course, we come to Mother Original. She was the leading contender to be inside that final coffin, but that didn't make the concluding scene any less memorable. Does she really want them all to be a family again? Can she truly forgive and forget? We don't really know the OW (Original Witch), but it's hard to believe she simply wants the family to live happily after in the house that Klaus built... right?

But that's a question for next week and beyond. For now, there's far to much to consider: Might Elena really end up with Matt? Who could Dr. Fell be working with? Did anyone else wish we had seen Klaus actually tell Elijah about their mother? And, seriously, is there anything sadder than watching Caroline cry?

It was nice to see the old Elena of season one who tries to take care of her friends by being there for Caroline and Alaric, rather than moping about her love triangle. Of course, Stefan and Damon have been around for over 150 years and have nothing better to do but protect Elena. Its nice to see how the 'tethering spell' performed in Season Two to keep Elena human is turning out to be a double edged sword. If she had become a vampire and Klaus had still realised that her blood was needed to create his hybrids, Elena would probably be on the run from Klaus now, as a human she is still in danger from him despite his promises to let her live (my how generous of you Klaus).

Poor Matty didn't understand what he was gitetng himself into and I truly believe that because he didn't specifically say "I accept you Vicki Donovan" but rather instead said "I accept you", it allowed all ghosts to be attainable and do whatever they pleased. I absolutely love how when Mason probably discovered he had the ability to go whereever he wanted that he decided to be at Damon's house just to haunt him! haha that was so funny.

I just don't get one thing, how is the original witch still alive?i thought klaus killed her by ripping her heart out,and also if the original petrova blood was used to turn klaus and his siblings into vampires then how is she related to his hybrid curse.I love the dinner party,4 awesome vampires=perfect.I love how klaus and elijah tell the salvatore brothers that family is above all,did you see the expression on damon and stefan's face? And is it just me or did anyone else notice the resemblence between elijah and kol? Can't wait for next ep.

This episode was just freaking amazing,i loved everything about it,my favourite scene was the fight between elijah and klaus,"easy i just finished ronavating, you know you have everyright to be upset with me but i kept my word i reunite you with our family" very well played by joseph morgan.I also loved the scene where all the originals showed up,they rock especially rebekah with her "this is for our mother".God this episode is just perfect.I cried in that scene were caroline was trying to convince her dad to turn,it was really heartbreaking especially seeing my beloved caroline crying.

@janus: I, too, question the ability of newly awakened OVs to speak perfect MODERN English. And to not be freaked out by modern life. I guess there are just some things that have to be taken with a grain of salt...

I think I'm really gonna like Mama Original.

I always wanted Elena to be with Matt, and I was very upset in Season 1 when they spoke of this relationship but there was never any big deal about it, but of course it was important because they were in love prior to the Salvatores. Elena also always says that she doesnt want to be a vampire and because of that, I always wanted her with Matt. He is so awesome, just a genuine guy and one of my fav characters on the show (Caroline, Tyler and Alaric are the other three). Anyways, I hate Klaus, and that stupid original family, minus Elijah of course, so I just want all of them dead already...

@Rose : I assume that Mama Original needed them to be united, but they needed a doppelganger to perform the ritual , Tatiya was one, they needed her blood, end of story. Fair enough, they didn't have to kill her, but would they kill each other over a girl? So better to kill her instead of loosing your sons... But like I said, only assuming... ;)

And yes, the crimes suit me! I love it, want more and need to know more, M.O. is the same so same killer, different weapons...yay !

And the bros, sorry but they gotta let go of Elena. She needs to live a normal life, copy what Klaus said, not in the same terms though loooool. Her and Matt...we'll see.
Poor was hard to watch Elena stab him, and still doubt he'd come back... That Meredith(btw, there's one in the book, Elena's friend who indeed dates Alaric, interesting, forgot about that lol)
All in all, I loved it ! That's what I call a come back !
