The Secret Circle Review: A Bad Banana

by at . Comments

"Medallion" was full of twists that I felt coming... but I didn't know just how twisted they might get. Some fairly big knots were tied and it seems we will be dealing with the consequences of this episode for some time to come.

A Bonded Circle

It was a cool twist that Cassie was seen in the boat yard 16 years ago. Apparently the memories of some of those who were there had been altered to remember her presence. The woman who came to Cassie was her dad's psychic, to protect him from witch hunters. A surprise revealed she betrayed her circle and Dawn was just waiting for her to come back for the last 16 years.

I've never seen someone on TV buy bananas as overripe as what Dawn pulled out of her shopping bag. She may have good witch skills, but the chick needs to learn to buy better produce! She was also getting unexplained slices down the middle of her hand. It turned out to be a "marking" on the psychic. The psychic marked Dawn, so to speak, and then the psychic had a final mark of her own.

I knew the psychic was off. She was too sweet, and then acted too frightened when Dawn confronted her. Nobody acts like that. Cassie was also too willing to listen to this woman despite of having no actual proof that anything she said was true. Cassie's as reckless as the adults, and they are borderline ridiculous.

No matter how much they try to convince us that there is something preordained in the cards for Cassie and Adam, I don't think Cassie is good enough for him. Diana's speech at Adam's birthday party was amazing. Cassie has known about being a witch for mere months. How can anyone give what she thinks credence just because her parents had dark magic?

Cassie's character isn't alluring or charming enough to be able to change a group of kids who have been friends since birth, lost their parents at the same time and have shared so much. Cassie is my biggest problem with The Secret Circle and until she becomes at least slightly sympathetic it's going to be hard to respect her.

Her realization that the psychic was stealing their powers and turning all bad ass at the end didn't feel right. Britt Robertson can't pull that off without making me want to laugh. Maybe that's part of the process. They have to make her unappealing and want us to fight against her in order to convince us to want to fight with her when it's really needed.

For now, I can't stop thinking she was a plain teenage girl until very recently, and she's not handling her new life very well. Her new friends had been on a pretty decent path prior to her arrival. Now they are falling apart. What do you think? Is Cassie a good addition to the circle and a good influence on them? Is she just a bad banana? What might the show have been like if it had taken longer for her to show up in town? I would have liked to more time with the original semi-circle before she arrived.

Check out the quotes and come back tomorrow for an updated section of The Secret Circle music in order to glean more fun information from "Medallion."

okay..cassie is starting to annoy me...why wouldnt she be suspicious of someone who survived the fire that no one else did, why would she be so quick to trust that the medallion would be what kept them safe, she seems more interested in finding the truth out about her dad then whats best for the circle and its pretty clear that the dark magic is starting to consume her....alsoo, in the trailer for next week was that diana and adam kissing?!?! i did want him and cassie to get together but now i think i like the idea of him and diana working out again, but diana does seem a little needy when it comes to him....we shall see!

I thought the episode was quite strong.I figured the psychic was suspect. I liiked that we actually got to see melissa and that she has a semblance of a storyline. Cassie's addition to the circle mostly wreaking havoc on their lives is definitely noted.Everyone is kind of falling apart.I continue to like but continue to feel bad for Adam, but I do wish he'd tame the jealousy down a notch. He actually is the most responsible one of them all and Diana was right, he is the show's moral compass so to speak, but his puppy dog affection with Cassie makes no one take him seriously when they should. It was a sound episode and I felt like maybe they would venture out more into the others outside of Cassie. My biggest complaint is that the others tend to fall by the wayside for her sake.

I am curious, did they ever address how the circle (sans Cassie) discovered they were witches in the first place? I am starting to lose sympathy for Cassie as well...the end scene was also cut too suddenly...how did they get their powers back if they finished the spell that was going to take them? Carissa, how could you not address the OMG moment when Dawn was stabbed?! Did NOT see that coming at all!

I am becoming really impressed with Britt. Her acting skills have dramatically emproved. She looked pretty scary a few times in this episode. Besides the fact that it's showing how her family's past could potentially enfluence her, she looked purely evil at points, showing either her restraint or anger at the situation. I was blown away.

This was a pretty good episode. I am still not loving this show but I will keep staying with it. I am interested in seeing Joe Lando!!!
I personally think Britt was way better on Life Unexpected...

Normally I love your reviews but this one was really lacking. Your opening sentence mentions twists but then you spend most of the review complaining about Dawn's shopping and Britt Robertson's acting. Nothing on Charles, Ethan, the bonfire or the end scene. Smh(sigh) Looks like I'll have to fine another website that reviews TSC.

Carissa, The Secret Circle is loosely based upon a book series of the same name much like The Vampire Diaries. You should read it and may learn why there is a character named Cassie and why she is in town. I personally like the show and sometimes kids just don't know how to act. Britt was good in that one show she was in, but this may need more acting chops.

I loved this episode. My favorite part was the end when cassie realized the medallion was taking there power and she stopped and told Lucy she remembered the spell her father did and Lucy got scared and then Cassie did a spell and almost killed Lucy but didn't and just made her promise never to come back to chance harbor. I can't wait till we finally meet Blackwell it should be an amazing episode. The next episode looks amazing.

This show is a bit silly. Cassie didn't care much tonight about Adam's birthday now did she. I just don't like Adam. He's too holier than thou.
And I think the casting is bad...the actor just looks shifty all the time.

@ Carissa: Dawn marked Lucy not the other way around. Re read or ask someone to proof your post. It isn't the first time a TVF writer posted something with grammar and spelling errors.

There's no room for Jake between us.

She did tell me something disturbing, though. Did you dig up your dad's grave? With Jake?
