Hawaii Five-0 Review: Return of The Bromance

"Kupale:" Defender.

After the departure of Lori last week, fans got reminded here of what Danny and Steve do best: The Bromance!

There were more bromantic banter in this episode than there has been this entire season. Starting from the first moment when Steve came home; to the numerous car scenes; all the way to discussing Gaby and Grace at the restaurant; there was almost too much, if that's even possible.

'Speaking of Steve coming home, why do they insist on making Danny a bad house guest? I’m pretty sure Danny would never have put a dog in Steve’s room. At most Steve was only gone for two weeks for his yearly reserve duty; is it even possible for Danny to trash Steve's house that much in that time period if he had tried even a little to keep it clean?

My wife pointed out that in all the places they have shown Danny stay on his own, he has never been a slob, yet this week Steve walked into a kitchen fire, clothes were everywhere and a dog was in his bed. Really???

On a Reservation

That frustrating mystery aside, the rest of the episode between Danny and Steve was great. We haven’t gotten this much bonding time since last season. I especially enjoyed Danny checking with everyone to make sure they were coming to dinner. While I suspected this was a setup for Gaby to meet Grace, it was still very sweet the way they were out making a butterfly in the sand.

Sadly, my enjoyment ended with the bromance. First, the case was clichéd - how many times have we seen the "business partner killed the victim over making more money" story? (Okay, it being a boat business was new.) Second, they again used a well-known actor to play the murderer. This time, they got Patrick Fabian to play Tony, the business partner. Fabian plays a jerk so often that the moment they showed him on screen, both my wife and I tagged him as the culprit.

Then, you had the well-publicized guest appearance of Apolo Ohno. While I’m thrilled they finally had someone who was Hawaiian to guest star on the show, he barely rated five minutes of screen time. That’s barely longer than the commercial that mentioned him. I thought we were past the over-hyped-under-used guest stars bit.

Lastly, we had our "chase of the week" in the form of Kevin Creed on a motorcycle with the “running out of road towards water” trope. Have I mention there were clichés in this episode? With the incredible setting of Hawaii, you would think they could find a better ending to a chase than bumping the motorcycle off the dock into the water.

In conclusion, for all of us that have been missing the bromance, I’m thrilled they gave us a super-sized "catch up" dose this week. My only request is that it get tempered with some original story ideas too? I promise we won’t jump ship if you break out of the mold. Just look at how much we loved last week!

Did anybody notice when Danny came out of the water, his hair was the same. It was wet and flatter, but in place? Now thats a good rescue. Steve smiling at him and bringing back the "bookem Danno" and Danny saying something like, "book me a towel". Love it.

@lena..your welcome and like zia said the big thing is more of the 18-49 ers are watching either again or for the first time. That is a big deal!! So happy for the show and that we as fans are getting our show back! Four times??? Wow I thought I was obsessed, ha ha! I am watching it for the 2nd time as we speak. @zia..I would think a 3rd season is def a given. It can only get better from here. I think apolo was really good as well, he did better then I expected.

@Lena...I just finished watching a 2nd time, sure I'll be to 4 by the time the day is over. It gets. Better every time @Walter...Thank for the H50 history lesson. I know nothing about original and learning about is very interesting to me. I used to dismiss it, but no longer, thank you

When will Danny stop NAGGING???????????????????

Terry O'Quinn got the lead in another show, but the pilot has not been picked up yet. Joe will probably be back before the end of the season to close out the Shelburne story line, which PLenkov said there was more to come. Wofat is not going to end if that is what you are thinking. We have not seen him in a long time so he will appear before the end of the season. If he goes and comes back, it will keep the story line fresh, so if Wofat and John McGarrett lines are not your thing, you are going to be disappointed. This is a big part of the back ground of McGarrett and why the 5-0 team came together in the first place.

What more can I add that hasn't been written? Hope now that O'Quinn has his own show he will get off this one too and they go back to crime of the week with just the fab four. Thank you writers and producers for finally waking up.

Great episode. Looking forward to the next episode with Poppa Caan and Dennis Miller as the guest victim. As I've mentioned previously I love how this show pays homage to the original. Al Harrington who played Mamo was a regular. Dennis Chun who was the HPD SWAT leader is the son of Kam Fong the original Chin Ho Kelly.

@jschoi .... Thanks for your words to Jim exackly how I think about it how good the episode is he will never give it a 5 star his right doing so of course! but still! @amazingalex... Thanks for the ratings really a great day after a great episode the ratings were up again. Hope now that both (Lori and Joe) are gone many viewers will come back because the actors deserves that. Call me nuts but I have watch the episode for the 4th time and I am still have a big smile on my face!

As Amazingalex said, H50 back on top in the ratings, slight edge in total viewers, but big edge in 18-49 demo. Can't wait for the rest of the season and sure bet its good for season 3. Lena...."aneurysm face" forgot about that. LOL. I know they will need to go with darker episodes, but I love these. Does not matter male or female, 5th character is too much, recurring and guest stars are enough to tell the stories.

@Lena - That wasn't a grenade, that was tear gas.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Episode 17 Quotes

Steve: Time travel doesn't exist.
Max: On the contrary, there are several theories....
Danny: With all due respect. For argument sake, let's say this man didn't own a Delorian and is from the 21st century.

Danny: You ruined my frittata.
Steve: I put it out of its misery.
