The Vampire Diaries Review: Here Lies a Great Episode...

at . Comments

That was a damn good episode of The Vampire Diaries.

You want emotion? How about two fake funerals, as Caroline and Elena both took significant steps toward a new path in life?!? You want action? How about a high-speed chase across a bride to somewhere really dangerous, via a game of revenge-based chicken? You want shocking moments?

How about a decapitation? A murder? A declaration of love from Tyler that was immediately followed by a nearly deadly bite into Caroline's gorgeous neck?!? Oh yes. "Our Town" had it all, including tequila and cake, the touchstone of any birthday party.

Caroline Turns 18!

Let's start with Ms. Caroline Forbes. Seriously, is there anything more depressing than watching this typically cheery cheerleader (and third grade hop scotch champion!) in a bad mood? It's just not the way she's meant to be.

And who would have thought it would take Klaus, of all people, to put a smile back on her face? To force her to admit that life is very much worth living, especially with all the "genuine beauty" a vampire has access to over the centuries? But he can't really be making a move on Caroline... can he?!? We all know Klaus has a heart, this is not some one-note villain twirling his figurative mustache and cackling into the night. Still, the especially tender side we witnessed here came somewhat out of nowhere. I say the guy has an agenda.

Don't be blinded by the diamonds, C. Or by the fact that the love of your life apparently can't really control his actions. Be strong.

From a downtrodden 18-year old to a daring 154-year old... damn, Stefan. I would NOT want to see you across from me at a poker table. We could debate forever whether or not he actually would have driven Elena over that bridge, but I don't think Stefan even knows. He's fueled by rage, and vengeance and, yes, a broken heart. He's living moment to moment, not considering any actions except those that will put the hurt to Klaus.

Stefan may act all tough. He may claim protecting Klaus' siblings is his number-one goal and that saving Elena is Damon's problem now... but I don't buy it. It's a similar form of denial that many of us have gone through when we think we've lost our soulmate, only we put on Wilson Phillips CDs (right, guys?), get drunk and try to hit on every girl that walks by. Stefan turns off (dims down?) his humanity, locks his heart up and focuses solely on blood lust. Tomato. Tomat-uh-oh.

You know it's bad when even Damon is scared. I loved the scene when he pleaded with Klaus to do whatever Stefan says. It was another sign of how much Elena means to him, sure, but it was also emblematic of how frightened Damon is by an unpredictable Stefan.

And, Elena, we can all understand where she's coming from, right? Being with Stefan felt safe and secure. Being with Damon feels rebellious and, simply, wrong. It can be tough to accept you're no longer the innocent child who sees the world in black and white. Be excited, Delena fans. That faux funeral was Elena's way of realizing that life can be complicated and so can the man she smooched last week.

Elsewhere, what do we make of Dr. Fell? And the homicide that concluded the episode? I'm not sure why the sheriff would call on Damon for a regular murder (aside from the fact that, let's face it, who would NOT want to spend as much time as possible with that guy?), but it must have something to do with the fact that Brian the Medical Examiner covered for all those vampire kills by writing "animal attack" on various death certificates.

Is it random that we've never met these people before, considering Meredith is on the Counsel and Brian apparently played a huge role in town over the years? Yes. But... whatever. It's a new mystery, and an intriguing one at that. What would The Vampire Diaries be without unexpected cliffhangers that zig when you expect the show to zag?

Quick Bites:

  • Hey, we found a second use for Bonnie! She can cast spells to save the day, and she can light birthday candles.
  • Ladies, how many of you want to drink the Klaus Kool Aid?
  • Somewhere, Ric Flair is expecting royalties for Stefan stealing/paraphrasing his catchphrase. To beat the villain, you've got to be the better villain.
  • Last week, the kiss. This week, Tyler drops the L bomb. Are you trying to make the Internet explode, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson?!?
  • It is right. It just isn't right now. Very well, played, Damon.
  • Okay, I give: what's in the locked coffin?!?
  • Let's take a look at next week's episode promo, shall we?

the stefan and elena scene made me cry.. i want them to put damon and elena together cause i think there better apart, the whole reason people think there hot is cause the tension.. and people who say stelena cant be together now.. he may not of driven of the bridge? so how is he worse than damon.. damon after everytime being saved by his brother trys or kisses elena.. kills people brother, pretty much raped and compelled caroline and andiee... i just hope they end up together.. or he ends up with katherine who actually loved him more and was open about damon. unlike elena although she may not of kissed him not shes just as bad as damon for always being around him.. knowing where it will lead :|

I am not saying that I wanted Damon and Elena together from the beginning. I was not truly sold on Stefan and Elena because it was before the show became really intense and I was not drawn into their love story. It felt very quick and really did nothing for me at the time. However, as the show became more intense, I did start to care for their love story. In the meantime, Damon grew on me and his love for Elena grew on me. It seems as though it grew on HER too. I am not interested in fighting with anyone. I am more interested in discussing the show with other fans and making friends who want to talk about it. I don't care what the writers do, as long as it feels right to the viewers and is consistent. Right now, no matter how you slice it, they are setting up Damon and Elena as something huge and possibly infinite. If that changes, they better do it in a way that makes sense. Right now, what make sense is DELENA. I mean, are you people even watching the same show as me?

Although I think Klaus has some plan I liked the scene between him and Caroline.

CAROLINE!The moment she appeared she captured me,her posture her look (I

Liked Elena's working out scenes! And than the scene with Bonnie and I hoped for a reaction during the episode and there comes the side kick direct into her eyes!
Stefan!I love Paul's sneaky face expression! Shame he can't be evil and Elena's puppy for the whole show!Taking out Mindy nice cut!I'M A SUCKER FOR STELENA SCENES,PEOPLE CAN SAY WHO EVER AND WHAT EVER BUT THESE 2 ARE SIMPLY ENDGAME !

This episode was perfect in many ways..You couldn`t make it better..Don`t know what to say..Damom and Elena at the beginning..and this complete different views.. him smiling and happy and next Elena dealing with her growing feelings for damon..Stefan is the perfect bad boy, and i`m not seeing him hurting Elena as a fault. Rememer when Damon told him that he wasn`t capable of doing bad things to get things better..Now he is.. And he did for good reasons. And I don`t think that he and Elena are totally over, even that i want Elena to be with Damon. And i think it is great work of the writers. If she really falls in love with Damon it has to be because she wants him more, not because old Stefan is not around. And i`m also happy about Damons Words at the end. It`s right. It`S just not right now. Perfect. Let`s don`t forget what Elena has to learn. Even that Damon and Stefan looks young, between those folks are over 150years of good and bad experiences..

why is it that DE fans believe everyone who doesn't like delena or said delena was forced is a stelena fan which is not true, there are alot of people that doesn't like delena and they are not SE fans, its even funny how they say Stelena fans are bias, well delena fans are bias too sometimes even morethan stelena fans, they don't care about everything stefan has done for damon and elena, they tend to tear stelena in every way possible saying things like stelena was based on lies, they have no chemistry, they are so bland blah blah blah and everytime is like this, thank god some of you don't write for this show if not stelena will be over since in season 1 and damon and elena would have been together since then and don't even start with the whole "they need build up" coz that's not true, majority of delena fans want delena to happen so bad since in S1,they don't care whether they have build up or not, they just want them to be together.

Love Caroline all the way! and that scene with Klaus??? was he thinking of Rebeka? or maybe as the review says he has an agenda...I don´t really care, both of them were great together, specially since everybody didn´t know (or bother to know) that Caroline was dying. They don´t deserve her

this is an amazing episode,my heart break when stefan told elena that he lost her the day he left with klaus,OMG i almost cried,i love the scene between klaus and caroline but honestly i don't buy them as a couple if that's where this show is going.i love almost everything about this episode especially the stelena scenes,it was really heart breaking but that's not the end of stelena to who ever is saying stelena is over,it has just began.
