The Vampire Diaries Review: Here Lies a Great Episode...

at . Comments

That was a damn good episode of The Vampire Diaries.

You want emotion? How about two fake funerals, as Caroline and Elena both took significant steps toward a new path in life?!? You want action? How about a high-speed chase across a bride to somewhere really dangerous, via a game of revenge-based chicken? You want shocking moments?

How about a decapitation? A murder? A declaration of love from Tyler that was immediately followed by a nearly deadly bite into Caroline's gorgeous neck?!? Oh yes. "Our Town" had it all, including tequila and cake, the touchstone of any birthday party.

Caroline Turns 18!

Let's start with Ms. Caroline Forbes. Seriously, is there anything more depressing than watching this typically cheery cheerleader (and third grade hop scotch champion!) in a bad mood? It's just not the way she's meant to be.

And who would have thought it would take Klaus, of all people, to put a smile back on her face? To force her to admit that life is very much worth living, especially with all the "genuine beauty" a vampire has access to over the centuries? But he can't really be making a move on Caroline... can he?!? We all know Klaus has a heart, this is not some one-note villain twirling his figurative mustache and cackling into the night. Still, the especially tender side we witnessed here came somewhat out of nowhere. I say the guy has an agenda.

Don't be blinded by the diamonds, C. Or by the fact that the love of your life apparently can't really control his actions. Be strong.

From a downtrodden 18-year old to a daring 154-year old... damn, Stefan. I would NOT want to see you across from me at a poker table. We could debate forever whether or not he actually would have driven Elena over that bridge, but I don't think Stefan even knows. He's fueled by rage, and vengeance and, yes, a broken heart. He's living moment to moment, not considering any actions except those that will put the hurt to Klaus.

Stefan may act all tough. He may claim protecting Klaus' siblings is his number-one goal and that saving Elena is Damon's problem now... but I don't buy it. It's a similar form of denial that many of us have gone through when we think we've lost our soulmate, only we put on Wilson Phillips CDs (right, guys?), get drunk and try to hit on every girl that walks by. Stefan turns off (dims down?) his humanity, locks his heart up and focuses solely on blood lust. Tomato. Tomat-uh-oh.

You know it's bad when even Damon is scared. I loved the scene when he pleaded with Klaus to do whatever Stefan says. It was another sign of how much Elena means to him, sure, but it was also emblematic of how frightened Damon is by an unpredictable Stefan.

And, Elena, we can all understand where she's coming from, right? Being with Stefan felt safe and secure. Being with Damon feels rebellious and, simply, wrong. It can be tough to accept you're no longer the innocent child who sees the world in black and white. Be excited, Delena fans. That faux funeral was Elena's way of realizing that life can be complicated and so can the man she smooched last week.

Elsewhere, what do we make of Dr. Fell? And the homicide that concluded the episode? I'm not sure why the sheriff would call on Damon for a regular murder (aside from the fact that, let's face it, who would NOT want to spend as much time as possible with that guy?), but it must have something to do with the fact that Brian the Medical Examiner covered for all those vampire kills by writing "animal attack" on various death certificates.

Is it random that we've never met these people before, considering Meredith is on the Counsel and Brian apparently played a huge role in town over the years? Yes. But... whatever. It's a new mystery, and an intriguing one at that. What would The Vampire Diaries be without unexpected cliffhangers that zig when you expect the show to zag?

Quick Bites:

  • Hey, we found a second use for Bonnie! She can cast spells to save the day, and she can light birthday candles.
  • Ladies, how many of you want to drink the Klaus Kool Aid?
  • Somewhere, Ric Flair is expecting royalties for Stefan stealing/paraphrasing his catchphrase. To beat the villain, you've got to be the better villain.
  • Last week, the kiss. This week, Tyler drops the L bomb. Are you trying to make the Internet explode, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson?!?
  • It is right. It just isn't right now. Very well, played, Damon.
  • Okay, I give: what's in the locked coffin?!?
  • Let's take a look at next week's episode promo, shall we?

Oh. I also think the person in the coffin, just might be the original doppleganger....or the person the doppleganger takes after. It's about time we see about that part of the curse

I feel like they are ruining Klaus character. He is so emo lately, cries alot and now he cares for a vampire barbie who he wanted to kill to complete his ritual but luckily got saved. He is suppose to be cold, ruthless and menacing. Now I think he just needs to go to therapy, hash out his family problems and then join the gang for Mystic falls endless parties. It's like he and Stefan totally switched personalities. Now Stefan is the supposed detached vampire with no feelings but resentment and rage. I guess the writers decided it was Stefan's turn to go down that lonely depressed angry stage too that Klaus and Damon went through. I like DE but I agree with Damon that now is not the right time. Elena is still wishy washy to me and annoying. I feel like it will be a long while before she will ever admit her feelings for Damon to Damon. And last, Damon was looking very delicious when he was showering. The man has a fine body.

Also loving crazy Stephen. He's way more fun and exciting now! It was messed up what he did to Elena, what with that being the bridge where her parents died. The Elena character needs WAY more emotion for those scenes. Seriously, it's only been like a year, maybe two, since her parents died there. And she's just...over it?! I don't think so. Getting minorly choked up about it isn't going to cut it. Vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, hybrids. All this "quaint" little town needs is a sociopathic serial killer who's actually just a crazy person. Oh wait, now they have that too. Honestly anyone in their right mind would pull a Jeremy and just pack up and GO, but then we wouldn't have a show. Can't wait to find out who the killer is. They're setting it up to look like Dr. Fell did it, but this show rarely does what it "sets up." Obviously Damon will be looking into wasn't just ANY murder. It was a murder by someone who doesn't mind bringing attention to vampires.

Honestly think the weapon to kill Klaus would be His mother ...but I dont want klaus dead after what he said to Caroline ..NO WAY....And I LOVE DAMON mmore than anything but I dont want a Delena ..I mean ya sure he should I mean he did want her for along time and Kat-aa-reen-a BUT NO Stefan is better Lover/Villon and Damon is Better IDK better everything ..BUT I just cant imagina a boyfriend...and I'm happy that Dr.Phil isnt just gonna be another Normal Girlfriend........And Whats Up wid MaTT !!! smething is up

I bet Bill Forbes was brought in to work on Tyler and his sire bond cult logic. Who is the foremost expert on resisting compulsion WITHOUT vervain? Bill Forbes. Come on....they didn't bring that up to use in just one episode to then forget about it. It had to be a set up for when they break Tyler of his sire bond. Hoping for Forwood sake, it works! Love Joseph Morgan. He is so sexy. I loved the scene with him and Caroline and with him being so tender towards her. He definitely needs a love interest at some point, preferably someone who's feisty and sassy. No clinging, whiney types for this Original. Maybe an on again, off again vampire girlfriend. I would love for Klaus and Caroline to be together, but that definitely wouldn't work for the show. Plus I really like Forwood. They are too cute. Caroline should totally milk it though....get that diamond jewelry girlfriend!

Honestly, I think Klaus feels threatened by Caroline. She can make Tyler say no to his Sired Master, and that's something that Klaus can't have. He needs complete loyalty and Caroline prevents that. So I'm guessing that he's trying to keep Caroline away from Tyler so that Tyler won't defy him anymore. Let's face it, Tyler is a very invaluable weapon for Klaus, because none of the Mystic Falls kids actually want to kill him. He's their friend, even if he is sired to Klaus. The bracelet was definitely deliberate. While it accomplished its (most likely intended) goal of making Tyler's bracelet look sort of childish next to Klaus's, I think Tyler's was still more fitting of where Caroline is at. The charm bracelet had cheerleading charms and such, reflecting who Caroline actually is as a person, whereas Klaus's was more sophisticated. I'm guessing Tyler doesn't have the financial means to compete with that...

4th coffin. Mother to klaus.

I dont think caroline and klaus are going to be together. I think he has something up his sleeve that no one knows about.
