Pretty Little Liars Review: Don't Rock the Boat!

at . Comments

After a promising start to the second half of the season, I was a little let down by this week's episode of Pretty Little Liars, "A Hot Piece of A." There was plenty of drama, danger and even a little romance, so we had plenty to enjoy. However, I just didn't buy the whole Lucas plot. I've always been a fan of that adorably geeky guy, and I can't believe he's the newest suspect.

Let's start with the relationship drama. It's bad news for Ezria fans! Aria still seemed pretty optimistic about their future, despite the looks of anger, betrayal and disappointment her parents kept throwing her way. Ezra was a little more realistic, especially after Byron stopped by for a little visit.

Byron vs. Ezra

Chad Lowe did an amazing job with this scene! The whole exchange was tense and totally believable. As a father, Byron has trouble imagining his little girl as someone who is capable of being in love, like any father of a teenage girl. This problem was made even worse when he sees his daughter with a grown man like Ezra. You could see his imagination running away with him as he suddenly noticed his daughter's outfits (totally against any school's dress code) and caught a glimpse of Ezra's rumpled bedsheets.

Luckily, his wife reigned in both his imagination and anger, so it doesn't look like Ezra will be going to jail anytime soon. However, Ezra still understands the seriousness of the situation. Aria will be a little harder to convince, as we've already seen her set up her next plot to trick her parents. I don't think lying to her parents is the smartest thing to do now. Damaging their trust in her (what little they have left) will only make things worse.

Why can't she just wait until she's legally an adult?

There was a brief Spoby reunion this week, which mostly served as an opportunity for Spencer to overhear an argument between Garrett and Jenna. There's a little trouble in paradise for this newly outed couple, but what's the cause of this friction? Garrett said Jenna turned on him, which wasn't surprising to Toby. It didn't seem like your average couple fight, and their possible breakup could open up new opportunities for the girls.

Did anyone else think Garrett was referring to Jason in that fight?

Other than the cute moment she had with Toby, Spencer spent most of the episode being annoying and bossy. As I've mentioned before, Spencer is always quick to accuse someone of being A or working with A. Each time there's a new suspect, Spencer immediately believes that person is guilty. She did the same thing with Lucas this week, badgering Hanna about one of her closest friends. It was bad enough that Spencer insisted on having Caleb work on the phone, despite the fact that she keeps Toby safely out of the A-madness. Sometimes I can't imagine why the girls would be friends with someone who can be a little selfish and stubborn. Then again, they were all best friends with the meanest of mean girls: Allison.

Spencer wasn't alone in thinking that Lucas was somehow involved with A; Emily spoke to Lucas on the crisis hotline and immediately became suspicious of him. BUT everything Lucas said on the phone was so vague! If they were a little more observant, I'm sure they would have come to a much different conclusion.

Since Caleb came back, Lucas has been keeping his distance, seeming almost tortured when he has to spend time with Hanna. It's no secret that he has a crush on her, and he's been a wonderful friend to her even though she doesn't return his feelings. It's more likely that Lucas has gotten tired of being stuck in the "friend zone" and wants to distance himself from Hanna.

Even though the whole boat scene was suppose to be ominous and scary, all that spookiness (fog machine and all) seemed artificial and forced. Lucas's anger and nervousness could be the result of a major emotional decision - to cut Hanna out of his life. Unfortunately, Hanna didn't wait long enough to hear anything he had to say. Now, poor Lucas is missing!

Did Lucas drown? Could he be A's secret partner? Take a look at next week's episode now for a few clues.

I loooove the sieers.I think either Jenna, Melissa or Maya could be A'.Jenna, because she is the only one -besided Toby- who knows about the Jenna Thing'.Melissa, because I think she always snoops around the girls to see whats going on, and was scared that Alison was seeing Ian.Maya because she could have all of Alisons old diaries and knows everything.I think that Spencer pushed Alison in the hole, and Melissa helped Spencer clean up and everything, since she knew Alison was dating her boyfriend Ian, secretly. Or Ian and Melissa both killed Alison, without Spencer!

I think that either Melissa or Maya is A.Maya beacsue she moved into Allison's old room and could have read her diary about all those girls. And Melissa for obvious reasons. I think Spencer hurt Allison, but I don't think she killed her. I think after Spencer went inside, someone else came and killed Allison. I think whoever it is has been doing all the killings and stuff in the woods.I know I think too much.I can't waitt for Unbelievable! And duhh Hannah's dead that's what happens when you get run over by an suv.Sorry if I spoil anything for anyone!

The theory of Lucas having a gambling obsession isn't logical. I mean, when he was unknowingly talking on the phone to Emily, he said "just seeing her face". I think the her he's referring to is obviously Hanna. He had to do something to Hanna to hurt her, and he didn't want to, but he said there was no way out. Noel and Mona were obviously spying on them to see if Lucas would go through with it or not. A is either Noel or Jenna (although she was the murderer, would they make A and the murderer the same person?)or Alis' Twin (since they wrote a twin into the Halloween storyline).
PS- Since someone does die in this season, I watched the Canadian slow motion... does it look like a bathtub overflowing, Lucas going upstairs, Caleb running up the stairs and Hanna crying, would he commit suicide in Hanna house? I hope not, I'll have nightmares for months.

I think I read on this website or review that "A" will be revealed at the end of this season. Does that mean the show will come to an end so soon? I just don't see what else they could do with the show if "A" is revealed. Maybe he/she will be revealed to the girls or maybe just to the audience and we have to wait and see if the girls can figure out who "A" is. Man there's just so many theories to come up with when you think about this show lol. I love it though!

For a while I thought Lucas was "A" too because he had a reason to not like Allison and would act weird sometimes but now that doesn't make sense. Why would he go put on all black clothes after being knocked into the water? How could he put on all black clothes so fast when it took Hannah a while to make it back to the party? I'm still thinking that Mona is "A" too. I still can't figure out what Jenna and Garrett are up to but they could be "A" as well. Obviously Jenna is in no condition to be running around town physically hurting people so maybe Jenna is coming up with the plans and Garrett is the one pulling it all off since Jenna is blind. Well blind for the time being. Let's see if she actually gets that surgery.

Whoa! Amy's theory about Lucas having a gambling addiction is really good! I never really thought about that.

Another theory is that maybe it was just a red herring and Lucas wasn't talking about losing A's phone at all - maybe he was talking about his gambling problem (remember in 2x14 when he opened his laptop in front of Hanna and there was a sports betting page open, which he quickly got rid of so she didn't see?). Everything he said on the crisis hotline could also have been referring to the fact that he lost someone's money by gambling, and now he feared for his life, and was going to commit suicide / run away to escape. I would not be surprised at all if Lucas is completely innocent in regards to all this A stuff and the writers are just making him look suspicious, starting with destroying Ali's memorial, then the costume he wore in the Halloween special and now this.

I have no problem believing Lucas is A's accomplice - I don't think he even knows who A is. There was no evidence to say that he does. I think A is harrassing him just like he/she is harrassing the girls. A has something on Lucas (possibly his gambling issues that were hinted at in 2x14?) and blackmailed him into meeting with the girls that night. I think the writers were wanting us to think Jenna & Garrett are A, and they were fighting about getting Lucas involved. That's what Lucas was calling the crisis hotline about - he lost A's phone and feared he was going to be killed. My guess is that his plan was to kill himself, or run away to escape A, and that's what he meant when he said he'd have to say goodbye to Hanna forever.

@Raaachx (=liarsunited), I never thought about it yet but now that you mentioned it, it's interesting that Aria never has to face anything as severe as the other girls. Maybe that does mean something. Mmm...

The girls pretended to fight to through people off guard.. so Jenna and Garett could easily be doing it to? tbh i actually sort of believe that Lucas is A's accomplice. he has the motive and brains.. so why should that mean that all of a sudden everyone was referring to Jason? WHY THE HELL ISNT ARIA BEING TORTURED LIKE THE OTHERS, shes basically the main focus of show now; which is terrible because she isnt even that interesting. Emily almost died like twice, Hanna was hit by a frickin car, and Spencer was practically stalked by Ian and almost killed by him... whats Aria had? I really hope theres a reason for all of this, like she's got some connection to A (like she/he has a crush on her, its her brother, its her dad ect)
