Hart of Dixie Review: Swing and a Miss-tress

by at . Comments

I understand that not a lot happens each week in Bluebell.

We visit the town on Monday nights mostly because Zoe is cute, Wade is attractive and Levon is funny. Hart of Dixie doesn't really do cliffhangers or twists or turns, and that's mostly fine. It can be enjoyable to just switch your mind off for an hour and plop yourself down in the middle of these quirky residents.

But the lack of suspenseful storylines simply makes relationships on the show all the more important, and "Mistress & Misunderstandings" took two major steps back in that regard.

Happy Hart

Wasn't it just two episodes ago, on the winter finale, where Zoe appeared to be opening up her heart to Wade? Granted, nothing actually happened and, yes, it makes sense there might still be some back and forth between these two.

That's what happens on TV shows, that's the sort of suspense Hart of Dixie wants to pull off, but the behavior by both these characters now feels contrived, like the writers have grown desperate to keep them apart for as long as possible. Their actions this week certainly erased any progress that was seemingly made on "Hairdos and Holidays."

Between past looks and kisses, it's just silly for Wade to still think Zoe is uninterested. And between her past exchanges with her neighbor, or even with George for that matter, it seems even sillier that proverbial sparks would fly from a smooch with Judson. Did anyone buy that lip lock? Does anyone really believe Zoe has feelings for the vet? I didn't think so. This reeks, as I said, of the writers needing to create an obstacle in order to delay the inevitable coupling of Zoe and Wade.

Meanwhile, wasn't it just one episode ago where the ice thawed a bit between Zoe and Lemon? What happened to the latter gaining some respect for the former after last Monday's Belle-based escapades?

That progress simply vanished here, as both Lemon and Zoe acted as if they were the same rivals they had always been. It's like last week's episode never happened, or previous ones for that matter, because the show has made it appear as if Zoe is gaining respect in town (she actually has her own patients now). It seemed like a stretch for AnnaBeth to be so afraid of their friendship going public.

These sorts of developments need to remain consistent on any series, but especially on one that relies so heavily on interactions between town residents. We need to believe there's some sort of evolution to these relationships, don't we?

That's why my favorite scene involved George and his enemy-turned-apologetic-drinking buddy. The former barely uttered a word, yet the look on his face - while his new friend rambled on and on about problems with his marriage that easily translate to George and Lemon - made it clear that he's just starting to realize the issue may not be Lemon's occasional nuttiness; it may actually be the two of them as a couple.

Which makes sense because George and Lemon together makes NO sense. I've noted it in past reviews, but it's worth saying again: he's nice and forgiving and open-minded, while she's simply... insufferable. Seriously, Lemon Breeland has to be my least favorite character on TV. She's just shallow and mean and stereotypical and a few instances of her crying won't change my mind.

So it was a frustrating episode overall. It's growing legitimately difficult to watch Lemon without hurling something at my television and, even more pressing, it's irritating that all progression on the Zoe and Wade front was erased simply for the sake of dragging out their courtship.

I need a double scotch myself after this one.

What irritates me about HoD is that they do not have a lot of focus on zoe treating and using her amazing medicine skills. They need to do an ep where there is an accident and theyu can't get to a hosp and she has to do these macgyver surgery and impress the townspeople while also having some personal drama and comedy infused into the ep.
They also need to have like a death or something to shake this out of a funk and get more viewers! I don't want rachel bilson of my tv screen so quick! This show needs at least 5 seasons in my opinion.

I actually really enjoyed this episode. As much as I want Wade and Zoe together was with other shows the couple you want to see will stay apart as long as possible, if they get together right away then how long can that last?
I knew that Lemon and Zoe would go back to being enemies. Lemon is not a likeable person at all so it makes since that her and Zoe will not be friends. I like that George realizes he and Lemon may not be meant to be
As for Judson and Zoe, you can tell she had feeling for him and would date him if he had not slept with Gigi, and she just went up to him and kissed him so that she would not ruin the Memory Matron position for Annabeth. It just proves once again that Zoe is a good person. To sacrifice a friend so that the friend could be the Memory Matron.
I love Wade and we will see them together one day

There are so many places this episode could have gone, but it focused on the wrong people then didn't even focus in on them too well. No storylines were furthered. Nothing was resolved. The only character who acknowledged anything that happened in any previous episode was Annabeth and in the end she decided she'd rather be popular than an actual human being. Sad. Disappointing. Waste of time. And my comment is longer than the review. Sorry.

George's victory dance over Pictionary was uncomfortable. Matter of fact, every scene save the bar scene with George in it was uncomfortable. He's too perfect and it's past time the writers tarnished him up some. I want to know why he gave up on New York. It wasn't that he missed Lemon. He's too sane for being born and raised in Bluebell. I think I'd like him more if we found out he quit his job as a lawyer in New York and tried out for a part in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. He came back to Bluebell after his dreams of being a drag queen didn't work out and his boyfriend left him. If it's not that, then he's just as shallow and vapid as Lemon and they deserve each other. Golden boys are boring

The key chain thing was ridiculous and didn't Judson sleep with her best friend three (four) episodes ago? Yeah, he's cute, but he had sex in her bed with another woman. That's Defcon 5 disrespect. Anyway this episode was way too PDA in my opinion and I write romance novels. Do you realize how huge my tolerance for PDA is? If I was saying ick, it's too much. For the record - Ick. Capital "I". Seriously.

Last episode was so great with Lemon taking all her mother's clothes to the church thrift store. There was some closure for Brick and Lemon that could have been built on this week. I fully expected the mother to show up in town on last night's episode. Wade really needs to grow up or we need to find out why he is Peter Pan. Personally I like his messy hair and the I'm too sexy for a clean shirt way he dresses. When Zoe told him to suck rocks and he poured her a glass of wine, I thought we were going to get into some serious story development then suddenly The Stepford Wives walk into the bar with their Queen and it's all about Lemon again. This isn't "Lemon of Dixie" for crying out loud!

There was so much of this episode I could not begin to understand. Wade and Zoe making out with other people in front of each other? Lavon thinking all Wade needed to do was comb his hair and put on a new shirt to win Zoe? Delia Anne having an affair with some random guy? No one saying a word about Delia Anne having an affair when the cat scratch broadcast it? Delia Anne's husband not coming out and saying to George that he suspected his wife having an affair? George telling Lemon not to call him if she kept up her psychotic behavior? It's not like Lemon hasn't been psychotic forever and ever, amen. Nothing changed until after he talked to Delia Anne's husband at the bar, but George telling Lemon enough was before he went to the bar.

I was really disappointed in this episode as well. It did help me figure out why I love this show so much though - Zoe Hart is me in high school. Underground success who has all the answers about baby making (although my secret friends wanted to know how to avoid pregnancy, not get pregnant). That's kind of a bad thing for her since she's supposed to be an adult, but a good thing for the CW because who doesn't like to see someone else suffer through and triumph over the same obstacles? Unfortunately, Zoe was less successful than I was which is REALLY sad.

Everyone around Zoe persuades her to consider Wade but she doesn't and comes up with a ridiculous excuse that he is wade. What does that mean? That isn't a reason!!!!
The writers should stop stalling and quickly do something about these two.

Well, I was kind of disappointed that the vet came back. When someone sleeps with your friend you don't just kiss the guy. I know she wanted to save AnnaBeths ass, but with the vet - come on. He is terrible. Wade's the guy for Zoe. The way Wade talk to the pickles and the peanut butter was so sweet and funny. I really love this guy, and could really she him with my girl Z. But if the writers keep making it seem like Zoe's not interested and Wade sad and therefore sleeping with skanks then I can't see them finding a way. It's an evil circle.
But I really hope that they will find each other and then date and take things slow and get to know each other so that they can see what I've been seeing since episode 1! They are sooo cute together.
Pull your act together writers and break out of this bad bad circle you've created!
