Hawaii Five-0 Review: Welcome to Margaritaville

by at . Comments

"Ki'ilua:Deceiver.

From Chin Ho proposing to the guys from Seal Team 9 tagging along to help rescue Steve, this episode of Hawaii Five-0 turned out to be quite a rollercoaster ride, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Okay, Chin Ho fans, who’s happy that he's marrying the woman who broke up with him when he was suspected of stealing from the police department? It's something we can all consider: how much are you willing to forgive the person you love most?

It’s easy for us as spectators to pass judgment on fictional characters, but I want you to think for a moment: what if the situation was real? Could you forgive the person you truly love for believing the worst about you? It’s a tough call. Thankfully, most of us will never need to make.

Helicopter Escape

Now we move on the sad part. I hope you and Josh find each other on the other side, Jenna. Rest in peace, knowing that Steve will take your murder out on Wo Fat, a tiny painful bit at a time.

Steve never believed the worse about you. He saw who you really were and was willing to forgive your mistake, even if it was big enough to land him as a prisoner in Korea.

I know some TV Fanatics were hoping that a different female was killed by Wo Fat. Personally, I enjoyed watching Lori shoot the RPG and blow up the bridge. From all the camera angles they showed it from, I’m guessing they got one try at that stunt. It was enough, it was awesome.

It was good to see Commander Gutches (David Keith) again. I really enjoyed the tie-in to the earlier episode, with Seal Team 9 owing Steve for a skydive catch of one of their team members. Wait! We also had the double whammy of Joe White (Terry O’ Quinn) working together with Gutches throughout the episode. I think my man crush may have just expanded a little.

Did anyone else catch Danny’s Margarita reference to Jimmy Buffett? Sadly, I couldn’t figure out how to get it in the quotes section for this episode, but it was great enough that I had to mention it. Speaking of Buffett, for the second time in as many weeks, we have been treated to some decent screen time with our guest start. How awesome was this iconic singer as the grizzled war vet helicopter pilot? I loved him!

Was anyone else actually glad when Wo Fat got away? He is such a great nemesis, I was dreading him getting killed or captured and the story ending abruptly, so I was relieved to see him trudging through the jungle.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I'm looking forward to the day Steve makes him pay for his father’s and Jenna Kaye’s death. But I want Steve to be do it personally not to have it be random gun fire in the jungle.

Finally, I have to mention my on going crush: Lori. The hug she gave Steve clearly shows her loyalties don't lie with the Governor any more, if they ever did. So, come on now. Tell me some new members joined the I Love Lori Club this week. Anyone?

@martinelli, I would love to ignore her, but I can't. She's ruined the show, possibly beyond repair. I'm not giving up until she's gone. At least there's a season one repeat tonight! : - ))

I just went back and read the review again and I don't want Jenna to rest in peace. She is responsible for at least 4 murders, the witness against Wo Fat, the 2 cops, the Japanese fighter pilot and possibly Laura Hills.

Loved this episode. Saw online somewhere they had to cut 15 - 20 minutes out so it fit the tv format. I would bet a lot of our complaints or questions may have been answered in those cut minutes. Would love to see them. In the meantime, it is not a reality show ( and I use the term "reality" loosely) but an hour to showcase both a beautiful island with some beautiful and very talented people solving crimes. I enjoy the bromance, the humor, the guest stars and the plot twists. In my ideal world, the advertisers would get less than the current 15 minutes per hour so we could see more of the show.

I'm so glad I purchased all of last season on DVD. Now I can enjoy all of the REAL actors and good plots as much as I want. This new season has its moments but leaves much to be desired. When what's her name pops up, I feel like I'm looking at a blank white wall talks a lot and doesn't really say anything...

Message for the "Lori haters" Guys, there are four amazing actors besides her in the show. Ignore her and enjoy the performance of the others. As it seems, she will be part of Five-O no matter what we think or how we feel.

@Loretto. You are right on the money with that. Lenkov was throwing us the proverbial finger with some of those Lori scenes. I dont believe theres any meaning to the hug for instance, it was merely thrown in to annoy. I think thats actually a good sign that shes on her way out. Hes probably been prevailed upon to write out his own creation by network bosses and now hes a little miffed and intent on making sure that he takes her out with as much irritation to us as possible. So buckle up people, the next few episodes are going to be rough!

@angry50fan: But it's interesting how it's apparently alright for a small group of Lori-lovers to tweet repetitively about how they think she's so wonderful (still not explaining *why*, so far as I can see) but it's not alright for people who are less keen to express their opinions. Let's just say I'm not impressed...

@azziria: yeah,I'v been following PL's tweeter, and there was one responding to the negative comments he'd received. He thought those negative comments were all sent by the same persons over and over again. He did not and will not give a shit about fans' feelings, which is such a letdown. And I don't think he'd like to listen to our honest voices about the show.Sorry for H50!

Lenkov *has* to support his character choice and his actress, I wouldn't expect any different of him (just as I would expect my boss to back me up to our clients, however things were going behind the scenes). However, what has upset him is that he's continuing to get the same negative reactions to the character posted over and over again - to which I say, so long as the same things continue to be wrong, and so long as people are getting no clue or feedback as to whether their comments and concerns are being heard, then of course he's going to get the same comments over and over. A lot of fans are very frustrated right now. Personally I would like to see Lori written out because in my opinion she doesn't bring anything to the show. Her character is two-dimensional, I have no idea who she is, what she likes or what she does, I'm not seeing either her profiling skills or her connection with the Governor, and I'm fed up with her being perfect. A flaw or two might make her more likeable. As for a romance with Steve - he's her *boss*, for God's sake. I can't believe that the Steve McGarrett we've been sold all through Season 1 would have an affair with a subordinate. But then, I didn't see Danny as an adulterer, so what do I know?

Just a thought re Lori: I've been reading that Lenkov has had some choice words for the anti-Lori folks, of which I am one. Dont know if that's true - haven't read his tweets - but it may be that the final scenes (Lori with Max's movie night and the hug in 2:10) may be his "in your face" response to the criticism. The more the complaints against his possible wish to keep her going (the actress or the character - maybe both), the more he may wish to highlight her outside of an episode's momentum. Or, I may be completely off.
