The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

by at . Comments

Welcome to the latest edition of The Vampire Diaries Round Table!

On last night's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - follow links for review, music and quotes - Mystic Falls was overrun by a number of ghosts, each of whom craved something different. Damon and Rebekah also ate some smores. Come along with Matt Richenthal, Steve Marsi, Dan Forcella and Eric Hochberger as they analyze the episode via our weekly Q&A.

Reader feedback is encourage.

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: I continue to enjoy cold-hearted Stefan, so any scene in which he was cracking wise. Referring to Elena as a "blood bag?" Calling her "pathetic?" Playing bloody twister! Why does Elena want this guy's humanity back? He's hilarious!

Steve: Mason's return and Mikael's awakening for pure shock value, or the scene with Rebekah for other reasons... if you know what I mean. I mean she's not un-hot.

Dan: As much as I hate all the ghost stories, I absolutely loved when Vicki proclaimed to her brother that she was going to kill Elena and then smacked Matty in the head with a wrench. I've been waiting a while for that kid to get his clock cleaned. No offense, Steve.

Eric: Mason's return. That was more shocking than when I found out he was dating Lady Gaga. But Mikael biting Katherine? A very, very close second. Only it didn't let me sneak in a Gaga reference.

Vampire Diaries Round Table

Is Katherine dead?
Matt: Heck no. She's harder to kill than Steven Seagal's character in the 1990 action film Hard to Kill.

Steve: I might incur some heat for this one, but I really hope so. Katherine's role is lost in the shuffle at this point, no longer directly related to the overarching storylines. TVD is almost juggling too many characters, she's become somewhat expendable, and this would be an awesomely unexpected way for her to go out. After half a millennium on the run from Klaus, she unearths the one vampire who can take him down, only to be devoured on the spot? R.I.P., I hope.

Dan: No. I'm going to assume sucking out a vampire's blood doesn't kill them, because you know, that's what we have believed since the beginning.

Eric: Like Steve, I really wish she was. I love Nina as Katherine. She gives that role such an evil seductress feeling that's so different than Elena, but her character has served its purpose and is merely a plot hole filler at this point. RIP, because damn that would be a good way to go.

Sexier Rebekah scene: The cheerleader split or the marshmellow suck?
Matt: What about the one where all the cheerleaders showed together after practice and then got into a naked towel fight? That is what goes on in high school, right?

Steve: The former. Man, that is one limber Original.

Dan: Ummm...what? Sorry, please don't tell Caroline that I was just daydreaming about Rebekah doing both of those things.

Eric: Her flirting with Damon was hot. So was her sucking down of that marshmallow. But I'm a sucker for a flexible girl in short shorts. Wins every time.

Is this the last we've seen of Vicki?
Matt: You want me to make sense of this ghost mumbo jumbo? I'll say yes because the one constant appears to be that apparitions only appear when a character thinks about them, so how would Vicki come back if she's out of Matt's mind? Then again, I somehow doubt Damon was fantasizing about Mason. So... I don't know.

Steve: Definitely not. Now that we know how desperate she is to escape, and that there's an actual path for her to come back and stay back, there's no way we've seen the last of Vick. I just hope this stoner doesn't come up with some half-baked plan to seek revenge on Matty now.

Dan: Yes. If her own brother doesn't even want the ghost version of her around, why would she want to come back? She made her attempt, which is now leading to ghosts upon ghosts coming back to the real world, and I'm mad at her for it. I don't like all of this coming back to life. If you're dead, you should stay dead.

Eric: Gosh no. For a show I once praised for having no problem killing off characters, it seems to have a nasty problem with bring them back. We need to use some sort of Extended Control Roundup next time and zap them. Eh? Eh?!? A little homeowner/landscaping joke for you guys there.

Biggest stretch: Rebekah entering Tyler's home without being invited, Elena thinking she could run the opposite way on the track to elude Stefan or the school allowing the Spirit Squad to sponsor a keg party in the woods?
Matt: I'm going with the Spirit Squad, which might wanna change its name with all these ghosts in town. People might get the wrong idea. But what high school allows a keg party to be advertised all over its hallways?!? That's more irresponsible than condoning those all-girl cheerleader showers.

Steve: Ah, the biggest stretch question, a Gossip Girl Round Table staple. Elena likely didn't think that through, so we'll give her a pass. The kegs probably didn't come from the Mystic Falls H.S. budget, so we can overlook that too. Rebekah waltzing in is a nice catch by our critic-in-chief, though, and a blunder on the writers' part, unless there's some explanation I missed. Honorable mention: Bonnie conveniently negging the spell that allowed Vicki to cross over. I realize that Bonnie was responsible for Jeremy's return from the dead and everything that entailed, giving her direct knowledge of this predicament. Still, it irks me sometimes that her only purpose is to occasionally show up and undo whatever.

Dan: I'll go with Rebekah entering Tyler's home with an extra point for Rebekah entering the Salvatore house. Doesn't Elena still own that home? Did she invite Rebekah in last week or was that another stretch?

Eric: Rebekah entering Tyler's home is kind of an interesting point. Does that apply to homes owned by supernatural creatures? But then again, the mother does own it.  Okay, this one wins. Man, I like debating myself in a Round Table discussion. Who needs other participants?

I love VD but I do have a few issues with it this season. WTF has happened to the bravado Alpha Vamp Damon. Where is his swagger and invincibility from season 1 and 2. He seems to be the punching bag for everyone these days. Klaus, Barbie, Stefan and now even a 6 month old female vamp Caroline.
Will he ever follow through with one of his promises of protecting Elena and never leaving. Elena trapped in burning car, Elena trapped in gym hall with the ripper, Elena being stalked at school by the ripper etc etc It does seem to me that the writers are making up the rules as they go along too.
Bonnie conveniently using magic to cover up plot holes in a time when I thought the witch world was against her and her powers were limited, where is Bonnie's story actually going.
Vamp's walking into any house they want.
40 odd people clearing a gym hall because a guy they have never seen who is grabbing onto the choosen one of Elena without blinking an eye lid.
The lack of communication between Tyler and the brothers. Surely they have something to say to each other. Tyler nearly killed Damon, Tyler's hybrid creator is Stefan’s master. There loved ones are best friends. Nope, nothing!!!
A 6 month old vamp in Caroline beating up a 100 year old Damon because she's angrier......C'mon!!!
Kat being the 'big bad one', no now it's the werewolves, nope now it's Klaus, hold on it's actually some guy called Michael. Kat is one character which I just don't get either. In season 1 she was made out to be this monster character who played both Salvatore's and would seek revenge on anyone who got in her way. Season 2 she just seemed to fade into the background and now in season 3 she just pops up with no real explanation or direction. I mean, I thought they might have tried to have her involved in the love triangle in some way after all both brothers were infatuated with her and both now love her doppelgänger. Wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to think they might still have underling feelings. I do love the show and most things about it are great but I just find season 3 some what lacking. Get Damon back to scaring everyone and beating anyone in his path and let him and Elena hook up already!!

I am guessing Rebekah could come into Tyler's house because he invited her in when she provided him with his breakfast blood bag mentioned earlier in the episode (the one he was wearing on his shirt).

Important question about the promo: Why is Stefan trapped in a cave? And why does Mason Lockwood lead Damon to him?
Possibly Lexi tied him up and is trying to get his humanity back like she did the last time he went round the bend?
And I SWEAR TO GOD IF THE WRITERS KILL KAT, IMMA BE SENDING THEM A HELL OF A LOT OF HATEMAIL.

Oh and let's stop critisizing so much and just enjoy the show. This series just gets better and better after all.

I LOVE KATHERINE. I'm sorry. I just can't stand hate towards her. She can do anything. Even if she's JUST strutting around.
Ok elena died remember? So rebekah doesn't need an invitation. Tyler's house though. Hmmm...
I love the DELENA scenes!!:D and I need them. Enough said.
OMG yeay masons back. Hottest werewolf ever:))
And I LOVE the spunky drunk elena. Just saying

First of all, Elena died last season so technical she does not own the house anymore (that`s way Kathrine could enter it in the season finale). And it is possible that the Lockwood house belonged to Tylers dad (since he his a Lockwood) and we all know that he is dead, and therefore Rebecka could enter it

The biggest stretch has been the resurrection of all of these dead people. Don't get me wrong... I think the storyline with Jeremy being able to see dead people is a great twist and will make for a great recurring theme. However, Anna and the other ghosts taking solid form definitely seems a little too convenient. On a positive note, I really miss Mason and Lexi (Mason for shallow reasons) so it will be fun to see them back. However, we may as well call the show the "Afterlife" since nearly every character has died and come back to life as a ghost, something undead or something boring (Matt). But since we are bringing back dead people, I wouldn't mind seeing Jenna and Elijah again! Well technically Elijah is only temporarily dead.... There is no way Katherine is dead (at least I hope she isn't!) , but I think we've seen the last of Vicki for a while. Her parting with Matt was heartbreaking and had an air of finality to it. On that note, I also think it's time to lay Anna's ghost to rest. The whole Jeremy/Anna relationship just seems too forced. Last season, Jeremy was willing to risk anything for Bonnie and now she's barely on his radar? Also, if he were going to give up Bonnie for someone, I think that Vicki would make more sense, since he seemed to care about her a lot more than Anna in season 1. By the way, I think Bonnie's character is truly badass and of all the characters, she's the most mature. So I completely disagree with her being irrelevant. Characters like Bonnie and Alaric, just need to have their own story, so I'm really glad that the writers are introducing us to Bonnie's mom.

you made the point!! why did Rebekka enter Tyler's home sans any invitations? what i really loved this ep? witty, hilarious, a little bit sentimental ripper Stefan!! he treated himself to a party with a bunch of bloody-shattered girls!! then he caught Elena at the stadium!! totally hooked with this side of his!!

I agree with samantha...damon is now a boring character...d only thing he has going for him is d elena longing and showing up anytime elena calls. Seriously? Where is d season 1 damon who has spunk n charisma dat all critics talk abt...d epicness dat is ian somerhalder. No thanks to d delena underaged clans...think now d producers r leaning to their outcry n in d process denying ian his shine. D only good thing is now people get to see also d awesomeness of stefan who btw is my favourite character. Paul wesley is killing dis ripper character...I love him.

I think that Rebekah was able to enter the Salvatore's hose because Elena once died in the Sacrifice. And that's why Katheraine was able to enter last season's finale to give Damon Klaus's blood!
And Rebekah entered Tyles house, maybe he invited her before, didn't he tell Caroline and Elena that she was helping him!!
