The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

by at . Comments

Welcome to the latest edition of The Vampire Diaries Round Table!

On last night's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - follow links for review, music and quotes - Mystic Falls was overrun by a number of ghosts, each of whom craved something different. Damon and Rebekah also ate some smores. Come along with Matt Richenthal, Steve Marsi, Dan Forcella and Eric Hochberger as they analyze the episode via our weekly Q&A.

Reader feedback is encourage.

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: I continue to enjoy cold-hearted Stefan, so any scene in which he was cracking wise. Referring to Elena as a "blood bag?" Calling her "pathetic?" Playing bloody twister! Why does Elena want this guy's humanity back? He's hilarious!

Steve: Mason's return and Mikael's awakening for pure shock value, or the scene with Rebekah for other reasons... if you know what I mean. I mean she's not un-hot.

Dan: As much as I hate all the ghost stories, I absolutely loved when Vicki proclaimed to her brother that she was going to kill Elena and then smacked Matty in the head with a wrench. I've been waiting a while for that kid to get his clock cleaned. No offense, Steve.

Eric: Mason's return. That was more shocking than when I found out he was dating Lady Gaga. But Mikael biting Katherine? A very, very close second. Only it didn't let me sneak in a Gaga reference.

Vampire Diaries Round Table

Is Katherine dead?
Matt: Heck no. She's harder to kill than Steven Seagal's character in the 1990 action film Hard to Kill.

Steve: I might incur some heat for this one, but I really hope so. Katherine's role is lost in the shuffle at this point, no longer directly related to the overarching storylines. TVD is almost juggling too many characters, she's become somewhat expendable, and this would be an awesomely unexpected way for her to go out. After half a millennium on the run from Klaus, she unearths the one vampire who can take him down, only to be devoured on the spot? R.I.P., I hope.

Dan: No. I'm going to assume sucking out a vampire's blood doesn't kill them, because you know, that's what we have believed since the beginning.

Eric: Like Steve, I really wish she was. I love Nina as Katherine. She gives that role such an evil seductress feeling that's so different than Elena, but her character has served its purpose and is merely a plot hole filler at this point. RIP, because damn that would be a good way to go.

Sexier Rebekah scene: The cheerleader split or the marshmellow suck?
Matt: What about the one where all the cheerleaders showed together after practice and then got into a naked towel fight? That is what goes on in high school, right?

Steve: The former. Man, that is one limber Original.

Dan: Ummm...what? Sorry, please don't tell Caroline that I was just daydreaming about Rebekah doing both of those things.

Eric: Her flirting with Damon was hot. So was her sucking down of that marshmallow. But I'm a sucker for a flexible girl in short shorts. Wins every time.

Is this the last we've seen of Vicki?
Matt: You want me to make sense of this ghost mumbo jumbo? I'll say yes because the one constant appears to be that apparitions only appear when a character thinks about them, so how would Vicki come back if she's out of Matt's mind? Then again, I somehow doubt Damon was fantasizing about Mason. So... I don't know.

Steve: Definitely not. Now that we know how desperate she is to escape, and that there's an actual path for her to come back and stay back, there's no way we've seen the last of Vick. I just hope this stoner doesn't come up with some half-baked plan to seek revenge on Matty now.

Dan: Yes. If her own brother doesn't even want the ghost version of her around, why would she want to come back? She made her attempt, which is now leading to ghosts upon ghosts coming back to the real world, and I'm mad at her for it. I don't like all of this coming back to life. If you're dead, you should stay dead.

Eric: Gosh no. For a show I once praised for having no problem killing off characters, it seems to have a nasty problem with bring them back. We need to use some sort of Extended Control Roundup next time and zap them. Eh? Eh?!? A little homeowner/landscaping joke for you guys there.

Biggest stretch: Rebekah entering Tyler's home without being invited, Elena thinking she could run the opposite way on the track to elude Stefan or the school allowing the Spirit Squad to sponsor a keg party in the woods?
Matt: I'm going with the Spirit Squad, which might wanna change its name with all these ghosts in town. People might get the wrong idea. But what high school allows a keg party to be advertised all over its hallways?!? That's more irresponsible than condoning those all-girl cheerleader showers.

Steve: Ah, the biggest stretch question, a Gossip Girl Round Table staple. Elena likely didn't think that through, so we'll give her a pass. The kegs probably didn't come from the Mystic Falls H.S. budget, so we can overlook that too. Rebekah waltzing in is a nice catch by our critic-in-chief, though, and a blunder on the writers' part, unless there's some explanation I missed. Honorable mention: Bonnie conveniently negging the spell that allowed Vicki to cross over. I realize that Bonnie was responsible for Jeremy's return from the dead and everything that entailed, giving her direct knowledge of this predicament. Still, it irks me sometimes that her only purpose is to occasionally show up and undo whatever.

Dan: I'll go with Rebekah entering Tyler's home with an extra point for Rebekah entering the Salvatore house. Doesn't Elena still own that home? Did she invite Rebekah in last week or was that another stretch?

Eric: Rebekah entering Tyler's home is kind of an interesting point. Does that apply to homes owned by supernatural creatures? But then again, the mother does own it.  Okay, this one wins. Man, I like debating myself in a Round Table discussion. Who needs other participants?

Blairchick, I'm with u. Damon and Elena have burning hawt chemistry and don't need romantic music in the background and him acting like superman catching Lois Lane. How sad is it that stelena has more passion now that they ARENT together?!! Gawd, I just know they will last too. They are laying the groundwork and taking it slow. Stelena had no buildup, that's never endgame on a tv show....just saying

My favorite scene was Mason Lockwood's return. I don't want them to kill Katherine off just give her a better story arc. If I remember correctly even Originals need to be invited in because when Elena pulled the dagger out of Elijah last season he had to get out of the house because he was not invited in. As far as Rebekah walking into Taylor's house, maybe the house is in his father's name and since he is dead no invite was needed. And I must say I am liking this bad Stefan. I hope they keep him around for a while.

Okay, I will throw this out, maybe it hasn't been addressed or maybe since I'm five months pregnant my memory has temporarily gone kaput, but do we even know if Originals need an invitation? You know, since they can do things regular vamps cant? As for Stefan, He is a LOT more fun with no humanity. i hope they don't bring it back too quickly. Because you know they will. Rebekah...hmm...I've got to wonder WHY she cares about ruining Caroline's life. She's no threat to her, she knows that. I just don't get it. And duh. Katherine is not dead. They'd never kill her off. It's too fun watching Nina play two characters. But you do have to wonder if, when Stfan was getting his blood let out of him by the witch and was told "you feel that, that's your essence, you lose that and you're dead." or something like that....It does make you wonder if a vampire losing all of their blood means theyre dead. Since blood is their life. I did like how it was a throwback to the first episode of TVD, when Elena came out of the mens bathroom and bumps into Stefan. And am I the only one wishing I was the one getting the whole "way to a vampire's heart" lesson from Damon??? No? I thought I wasn't. =) Whoo hoo! Bring on Delena! They've got SO much more heat than Stelena. Seriously. Who agrees? (I don't care who you ship, just tell me if they have more HEAT)

I really like watching Vampire Diaries, but I know in the Books Damon and Elena do not really get together. I really hope they do. I do hope Kat is gone. That character is just over and done with.

Strawberry-fields

We don't really know if Rebekah wasn't invited in. She may have been invited when she hooked Tyler up with blood. More interesting is the fact that Salvatore house clearly doesn't belong to Elena anymore (it's either that or the writers forgot about it). First Katherine, now Rebekah, and not a word of explanation. Is it because Elena died? It makes sense, but it would be nice if someone said something about that. As for Vicky - I really hope she's gone for good. As for Katherine - as Steve said, her character seems lost since we have so many new exciting faces around. But I doubt she's dead, Katherine's death scene should take longer than five seconds. And I still love her bitchy comments :) Favourite scene - pretty much everything with Stefan. Now that he went bad for real, I'm enjoying him more than ever. If I have to choose one, "the human blood bag" scene on the track wins. I also loved the Delena scene at the end with Elena's "casual" comment about Rebekah drooling all over Damon's marshmallows, followed by a typical Damon-style line to Alaric: "Sorry about the car, man. Bummer." :) Jeremy-Bonnie-Anna thing is getting annoying. Being jealous if the other girl is a ghost? Not cool. The only thing truly bad about this episode was the absence of Klaus. I understand that we need a break from his awesomeness (so he wouldn't steal the entire show from the main characters), but at this point I can hardly remember what it was like before he showed up in Mystic Falls.

don't really like katherine but i hope she isn't dead.i think rebecca got into tylors house because when they where in school and we saw tylor with the blood on his shirt he said rebecca gave it to him so she probably came by in the morning and when she gave him the blood he invited her in and they just didn't show us that part.can't wait till the next episode.

I'm a huge Delena shipper, but the only character where I haven't seen a development lately is Damon. He is a vampire without sharp fangs. They tried to show the conflict within him in "Disturbing Behaviour" but never brought it to an end. I have the feeling that it's all about: Elena calls me, I come :-( The authors have been teasing Delena so hard that it feels articifcial to wait for them much longer. I hope Elena brings Damon in "Homecoming". To Stefan: I think that he may be back to normal when they figure out the words of Caroline' dad: "the mind is a powerful instrument, it can be trained"... To Caroline and Tyler: I find them to be a very sweet couple. But do they need to have sex in every episode. We're not on True Blood here - but I wouldn't mind if Elena and Damon would have at least their first real, hot and passionate KISS (is that really too much to ask?) To Mikael: When he is so strong because of the vampire blood he drinks, why aren't other vampires do the same to protect themselves from him?

I love ripper stefan his candor and humor, hilarious!I love rebekah too but it's weird her and tyler are buddies.

This is how Rebekah got into the Lockwood house: This show doesn't consider becoming a vampire a true death experience, which is why TVD vampires have hearts that beat, it also explains why a person can become a vampire and still be considered the owner of a house but not be able to enter it (Logan Fell, ZOMG not a plot hole), and it shows why vampires cannot see ghosts, because they didn't truly die and go to the other side.

I hope Kat isn't dead. Her character might have lost some of it's awesomeness but this "death" was not shocking enough. Vicki on the other hand is hopefully gone for good. Never have liked her, never will like her. The reason Rebekah can enter the Lockwood manor is probably because she and Tyler are buddy-buddies now. Remember how she "hooked him up" on a couple of bloodbags before school?
