The Vampire Diaries Review: Best. Prank. Night. Ever.

at . Comments

Paging, Bonnie! Stat! After sitting slack-jawed and bug-eyed through the "The Reckoning," one thing is for certain: Matt was not the only one in need of CPR tonight.

What an incredible episode of The Vampire Diaries. Consider, Klaus apprehended Elena, compelled Stefan and snapped Tyler's neck; while Matt drowned himself, Katherine kidnapped Jeremy and the rising seniors took some serious TP to the school hallways.

And all that happened in the first 30 minutes.

Got Her Finally!

Were there a few plot holes? Yes. Let's get them out of the way now: Klaus created the hybrid he's been dreaming about for decades... and then just left him? Klaus discovered the key to building his own army of these creatures was Elena's blood... and then just left her? (Under newly non-human Stefan's creepy protection, I know. But still. Seems hard to believe Klaus would let the doppleganger out of his sight again.)

Moreover, despite all the action packed into the hour, the key points were all expository. They were just laid out to us. We were simply told that Klaus figured out the Original Witch lied to him; and it seemed awfully convenient that Pearl told Katherine that she knew about the vampire/vampire hunter... who told Anna... who told Jeremy via the great ghost beyond.

That's a lot of seemingly random telling and not a lot of showing or coherence.

But, man, when an episode takes you on that kind of ride, it's silly to pick at too many nits. Did any character's life not change tonight?!?

I'm still smiling over Damon and Stefan's role reversal, right down to the latter's drink-pouring and snarky one-liners. Oh, please, continue, Delena. Don't mind me and my utter lack of humanity hovering around the mansion. Creepy. Cool. Funny. Awesome.

I've also complained in the past about how VD was dragging out the longing looks between Damon and Elena, teasing a relationship that would never take place just because it knows how to get fans clamoring - but Damon's actions here spoke a lot louder than even his most heartfelt words ("I promise you. I will never leave you again."). The guy came back for her. He took on the oldest Original of them all for her. Bryan Adams really said it best: everything Damon does, he does it for Elena.

I actually believe there's a chance for these two now, and I'm actually rooting for one. Sorry, Stefan. I know you couldn't control it, but it's hard to maintain a relationship after killing two innocent students in front of your girlfriend in the high school gym, only to later drink the blood from her neck. It's almost never happened.

Elsewhere, it's great that Tyler is all happy and powerful and all, but, ummmm... Klaus just turned you into a hybrid, dude. Yes, you have a gorgeous, fun girl on your arm and, absolutely, senior year of high school is a blast, but you might wanna contemplate your next move against Klaus more than your next move with Caroline in bed.

As for Matt, I had completely forgotten he ever dated Elena. That feels like decades ago. Was I happy he got to see Vicki again? Sure. But when you compare his storyline to attacks from Klaus and stolen necklaces by Katherine and the resuscitation of Michael from his chained-up slumber... it's hard to be overly interested. Gotta admire the dedication to communicating with his sibling, though. I love my sister, but it's unclear if I'd risk suicide just to chat with her apparition.

Questions from the episode:

  • So Michael is a vampire and a vampire hunter (Vunter? Hampire? Hampire it is.). But what makes him so scary to Klaus? Wouldn't an Original still be stronger than any other vampire?
  • Unless Michael is also an Original?
  • Which was a more tense 20 minutes on the hardwood: the clock ticking down to Elena's death, or the second half of the Duke/Butler National Championship Game?
  • Super glue on Alaric's desk, Elena? Really? The best prank for this teacher would be to replace his name plate with one that reads "Ric."
  • Take away her thirst for blood and her lack of care over the human condition and Rebekah is pretty awesome, isn't she? Tyler is dead... ish. Loved it.
  • Is anyone else's heart still racing?
  • Can you handle a look at next week's episode? HERE IT IS.

@ Bill Damon selfishness has never been in question. However it was Elena that open that door. Kissing Damon is a bigger betrayal, than what Damon does. After all he promised his brother a life of misery. Also its clear you relate to Stefan as I do. Lets hope Rebekah is willing to fight off her brother. So Stefan has a real shot at some loyalty in his life. Also the triangle of S,D, and E needs to end as its really getting old. So Damon and Elena sounds good so the show can move forward. After last night plenty of places to go with a better view.

@Kara: I am not a Stelena fan either. I dont find anything interesting about the pair. What pisses me off is the way TVF misrepresents stuff.. Its like watching a different show and reading about a different one.

I agree with Bill completely. Stefan has sacrificed everything for Elena AND Damon and that's the reason Stefan's now in the position that he is. And you're suggesting Damon and Elena now get together and forget about the 1 person who did everything for them and he's the only reason they are both still alive???? So stupid. That would make this show really lame...

I cant believe it didnt get a mention in the review but the most noticeable part of the episode was the Stelena interaction. I loved how they showed the fight between Stefan's power lust for blood and his love for Elena. Brilliant show of the strong bond that these two share.. It was amazing. I also enjoyed how he had stabbed himself with the stake to stop himself for taking Elena. It was powerful and dynamic. Klaus' compulsion is a great trick. However, we should all remember why Stefan is doing this - to save his loved ones. The only reason he killed those two kids was because otherwise Klaus would have hurt Elena. The Delena scene was sweet but it didnt really grow on me much because I have seen it before. Damon risking all for Elena- been there, seen that! I must say I am neither a Delena or a Stelena fan. I am a FORWOOD fan.. and it was such an emotional upheaval for Forwood. I cant believe that Tyler was about to die. I would have cried if that happened. Caroline and Tyler were really good.. what ailed me was the last Forwood scene -why was he acting so happy? What about Klaus and his evil plan... Matt and Vicki were so heartbreakingly touching. Though her goodbye scene would have been great... I wanted to see that. Bonnie-Matt friendship was so sweet. Lets hope they dont hook up!

@Rose, sure your not a Delena fan LOL

It is hilarious how biased towards Delena the entire TVF team. Its your choice and its fine. But bring on some diversity. It makes a better read. I remember reading how Stefan only loved Elena because he was compelled to forget Rebecca and look how that turned out and today's Sorry, Stefan. I know you couldn't control it, but it's hard to maintain a relationship after killing two innocent students in front of your girlfriend in the high school gym, only to later drink the blood from her neck. It's almost never happened. just made me laugh. Seriously dude, are we watching the same show. Damon killed Vicki for fun, killed her brother Jeremy and she still forgave him. I , for one, am not a Delena or a Stelena shipper but this bias is really just boring.Anyway a good episode. Though there were so many loose ends... like you pointed out. I 'm sure TVD will tie them all in good time.

i loved this thing that im wondering is does matt now see vicki all the time like jeremy does.i loved the part where damon comes back and klaus was going to kill him but damon says michael knows where he is because he and katherine found himand damon said lets call it are leverage.i also loved it when damon came in got elena and they went back to the house and he said he was never going to leave her again.

Saw the episode a few minutes ago..and i swear i never see anything should this season end up for us all, when it`s just so heartbreaking by now..LOVE EVERY WORD BETWEEN DAMON AND ELENA..
When she asked him with all this feelings in her face about where he was, and he answered that he shouldn`t have left, and than go on with the promise to never leave her again..if i never sat in the Damon-Elena-boot i`m in..
Isn`t it all that we dream about..that a man, even that he is far beyond from being perfect, is fighting for us, against himself, and all the enemys around..
Please forget Elena, Damon..and go on with
Love Bonnie for telling Matt, that he`s the only one who has the chance for a normal the plot that the original with lied to Niklaus, that he has to kill the Stefan for turning in such a badass jerk..Love Damon for resisting Katherine sexual attack..
Love Niklaus, because he`s really bad and not in the need to be safe from his dark side..his dark side is breathtakin to watch...
Love Katherine and still hope for a higher order for her..Maybe she can save Stefan..
What was this in the first two seasons ?? Upwarming for cooking us on a low heat ????
Amazing..count the days till next episode.. PLEASE WRITER GO ON LIKE THAT..

Anna maria

Is Michael his dad? hmm I think so..this episode was AMAZING!! I just think he should have taken Elena and least Tyler, but oh well, he'll be back soon..and I LOVE the role reversal. FINALLY Klaus brainwashed Stefan, what I was waiting for all along! I want more klaus and I definitely want some rebecca/stefan action and some Delena lovin..I LOVE Damon, he's so sweet! I'm liking Katherine a lot too..she should stick around!

WTF...........!!!!!!!!!!! That was my reaction the entire time while watching. I was confused, mesmerized, entertained, horrified, intrigued, confused, I smiled, I laughed, I nearly fell out of my seat, and I smirked like Damon, and did I mention I was confused?! By the time it ended with Stefan and Damon switching roles in that perfectly executed scene with Damon all vulnerable and sincere and playing the doting boyfriend and Stefan snarking off one liners and pouring his drink like Damon I was impressed, excited and brings me back to how I started this post...I actually said WTF?!!!! LOVED this episode! Wasn't a fan of it last week like everyone else but damn that was good!
