The Vampire Diaries Review: Who They Gonna Call?!?

at . Comments

Paging Doctors Spengler, Stantz and Venkman: the residents of Mystic Falls are in desperate need of your number. These folks require some serious ghost hunting!

Indeed, the latest Vampire Diaries episode, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," treaded heavily - too much perhaps? - in what Vicki referred to as The Other Side. There were apparitions aplenty, from Anna's pining over Jeremy; to Vicki's devious deal with a late, powerful witch; to the return of Mason Lockwood.

Wait... what?!?

Dancing... with the Devil?

Yes, folks, Taylor Kinney has stepped away from The Edge of Glory for a bit and come back to... haunt Damon? Enact revenge for his murder? Mentor his nephew? There's no way of knowing at the moment, which is part of the frustration with this ghost-heavy storyline.

It's all rather muddled. Anna can apparently touch Jeremy. Vicki was a vision only Jeremy could see, then Matt, then she was back for quasi real, tried to kill Elena, and then was banished again. Now Mason has been added to the paranormal mix. It's a lot to take in and there's no way to make sense of any of it.

It's one thing to keep viewers in suspense; it's another to outright confuse them with one random event after another. Right now, my eyebrows are furrowed more than my pulse is pounding, but have Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec given us any reason to lose faith? I'm confident these ghost stories will come together at some point. In the meantime, let's gather around the camp fire and eat smores with Damon and Rebekah, shall we?

I have a feeling neither gender will object to that plan. Double yum.

Aside from ghostly befuddlement, two major, fascinating developments went down:

1. Is Katherine dead?!? I have to assume not, as she has more lives than Chloe King. But we definitely learned what separates Mikael the Vampire Hunter from other vampires this week: he feasts on his own kind. Perhaps killing Klaus is as simple as sucking down his blood.

2. Tyler is totally sired. And he isn't just a freaky Klaus slave minion, as properly dubbed by Caroline, he's been baited into becoming his own type of Ripper. Damn. How will the taste of human blood affect the new hybrid? And how will Rebekah use him? As a force to be reckoned with, alongside her brother when he returns? Or a force against her brother? These two Originals don't exactly get along all the time. Would anyone be shocked if Rebekah turns Tyler loose against Klaus?

She's the show's biggest wild card at the moment. She's also really attractive.

A few concluding notes on an episode that concluded with a shock, but went in many different directions - without really accomplishing much - in order to arrive at that point:

  • Poor Alaric. The guy loses his wife, then his girlfriend, now his car. And people don't even call him by his proper name most of the time.
  • How, exactly, did Rebekah get into Tyler's house without an invite?
  • I would pay good money for a Mystic Falls Timberwolves t-shirt. Even better money if it were dry fit.
  • Barbie Klaus. Buffy shout-out. Simulation of a school bell ring and a sexy lesson on how to get to a vampire's heart? Damon enjoyed a strong hour.
  • I'm the guy who's been assigned to protect the human blood bag. I mean, no offense. Offense totally taken, Stefan. You better develop a solid defense now against a newly-trained Elena.
  • Take a look ahead at next week's "Ghost World" via THIS PROMO.

Like the hunter-story aroung Mikael..kinda awesome..and i hope he just use
Katherine as a blood bag..If she ever dies ( and i hope not !!) should be more epic..maybe while saving Damon or Stefan..If she`s really dead, i will be really upset about it.. Like also the ghost-stuff, but i`m really afraid, that now every dumb character is coming back..that would be too careful perfect writers.. But now the obwious choose for a reason to love this episode...
Well even the die-hardest stelena fans must admit, God..what a unbelievable attraction and sexual tension between Damon and Elena.
I swear, i stop breathing, when he took her hand and press it against his chest..Gosh..Damon..
I`m not sure if i ever see a tension like this in TV..
This was eye-candy..
The sweet moment at the end, when both admitted that they kinda faked things, and Elena admitted that she was jealous..and faking her drunkeness..
and Damon answered..And so was i (with flirting with Rebecca)..
Well, damned..i wish this moment would never ends..
But i agree with some of the writer before...
They must build a room for Damon or Elena, or let get Damon over her..because they can`t count forever on the fact, that the fans of these couple will be pleased with just wanting them..
Things need development..and i really hope towards Damon and Elena...
The chemistry is overwhelming...
Why can`t i be Elena..I would exactly know what to do with his the funny, dark Stefan over the top..Paul`s never been as sexy as now...please no turning back for the good behave one... Love every second..
and please Katherine..
don`t be dead..

Ok # 1 I love the fact that he mentioned Chloe King, #2 that was a great episode #3 I was soooo happy with the relationship development between elena and damon, and #4 stefan was a huge jerk this episode! Go Elena for stabbing him!!!!

Lmao @maybe klaus brought back mason . . . highly unlikely, last I remember he had his heart ripped out.

Maybe, Larissa they are hesitating having Damon and Elena "hook-up" (guess that sounds better than "have meaningless sex) because some fans - not you, obviously - might not think much of Damon or Elena if they did. Stefan sacrificed everything that meant anything to him to save his brother's life and to keep Klaus from harming Elen,a and that should be rewarded by his brother sleeping with the love of his life? I guess I'm old fashion because I still believe people who do that sort of thing aren't worth a damn, be they real or fictional.

Well the only thing that really got me wondering is that Rebekah got in the Lockwood's house without getting invited in. Even Elijah was not able to get in Salvatore house neither the Guilbert lakehouse coz he had to be invited in. otherwise i was totally surprised astonished amazed fazed seeing Mason Lockwood in the end.

I enjoyed this episode.. it wasn't as intense as last weeks episode, but im glad i kind of needed a break. Really enjoying heartless stefan, I think paul is more in his element playing the bad boy.. its not charming like ian, its creepy and shocking and funny... Elena is being more independent and she is getting stronger.. both in body and mind. I like that I want her to be her own person. I think bonnie has to cool it with the jealousy a little bit, while i understand it she has to remember he didn't ask for this to happen, and he can't help it ifhe still harbors feelings for anna, she was taken from him, the feelings are there whether he sees her or not.. the touchy feeling thing is wierd tho, i was surprised when they touched.. but then at the end when mason kicked damon across the room i was like okay.. im thing that since the balance is all messed up with the hybrids being able to survive, the supernatural world is in chaos.. maybe thats why matt was able to see vicky, and other ghosts are crossing over.. damon seeing mason, makes sense, damon is technically dead so him seeing the dead.. not too much of a leap there. What i want to know.. is katherine alive?? when is elijah coming back?? and when will klaus return for more blood. its only been one ep but while klaus is the villian, he's not hard on the eyes, and he's so exciting

Loving the bad evil Stefan and his scenes with Elena. Their chemistry has increased tenfold. The Forwood sl has me interested. Caroline is always a pleasure to watch and with Rebekah complicating things and Tyler struggling with his new and old ways is bound to be interesting

I hope Mason is now an hybrid and not a ghost. Klaus could have bring him back with elena's blood.

I already miss Klaus! And I want Elijah back! But it was still a very good episode, maybe a little slow paced conpared to the previous ones but I guess it is a going back to "original" characters, since it mainly turned around Elena/Stefan/Matt/Damon...(well you see my point^^)
Anyway, I am so glad that Caroline pointed out to Tyler his behavior, him being back to his "old" self she didn't like (neither did I) and happy that the issue was kinda answered! I see troubles for Forwood, mainly because the bitchy Barbie Klaus! I though she was into Stefan but she was quick to change for Tyler!
I hope to see Caroline is more scenes without/not about Tyler. It would be great!

In love with the bad Stefan and the scenes between him an Elena especially the one when he catch her up. Their look.. grrrrrrr !

Why should I let the fact that my boyfriend was turned into a hybrid put a damper on my day?

I think you found a way to get out of bed this morning and that makes you the strongest person I know.
