The Vampire Diaries Review: Who They Gonna Call?!?

at . Comments

Paging Doctors Spengler, Stantz and Venkman: the residents of Mystic Falls are in desperate need of your number. These folks require some serious ghost hunting!

Indeed, the latest Vampire Diaries episode, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," treaded heavily - too much perhaps? - in what Vicki referred to as The Other Side. There were apparitions aplenty, from Anna's pining over Jeremy; to Vicki's devious deal with a late, powerful witch; to the return of Mason Lockwood.

Wait... what?!?

Dancing... with the Devil?

Yes, folks, Taylor Kinney has stepped away from The Edge of Glory for a bit and come back to... haunt Damon? Enact revenge for his murder? Mentor his nephew? There's no way of knowing at the moment, which is part of the frustration with this ghost-heavy storyline.

It's all rather muddled. Anna can apparently touch Jeremy. Vicki was a vision only Jeremy could see, then Matt, then she was back for quasi real, tried to kill Elena, and then was banished again. Now Mason has been added to the paranormal mix. It's a lot to take in and there's no way to make sense of any of it.

It's one thing to keep viewers in suspense; it's another to outright confuse them with one random event after another. Right now, my eyebrows are furrowed more than my pulse is pounding, but have Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec given us any reason to lose faith? I'm confident these ghost stories will come together at some point. In the meantime, let's gather around the camp fire and eat smores with Damon and Rebekah, shall we?

I have a feeling neither gender will object to that plan. Double yum.

Aside from ghostly befuddlement, two major, fascinating developments went down:

1. Is Katherine dead?!? I have to assume not, as she has more lives than Chloe King. But we definitely learned what separates Mikael the Vampire Hunter from other vampires this week: he feasts on his own kind. Perhaps killing Klaus is as simple as sucking down his blood.

2. Tyler is totally sired. And he isn't just a freaky Klaus slave minion, as properly dubbed by Caroline, he's been baited into becoming his own type of Ripper. Damn. How will the taste of human blood affect the new hybrid? And how will Rebekah use him? As a force to be reckoned with, alongside her brother when he returns? Or a force against her brother? These two Originals don't exactly get along all the time. Would anyone be shocked if Rebekah turns Tyler loose against Klaus?

She's the show's biggest wild card at the moment. She's also really attractive.

A few concluding notes on an episode that concluded with a shock, but went in many different directions - without really accomplishing much - in order to arrive at that point:

  • Poor Alaric. The guy loses his wife, then his girlfriend, now his car. And people don't even call him by his proper name most of the time.
  • How, exactly, did Rebekah get into Tyler's house without an invite?
  • I would pay good money for a Mystic Falls Timberwolves t-shirt. Even better money if it were dry fit.
  • Barbie Klaus. Buffy shout-out. Simulation of a school bell ring and a sexy lesson on how to get to a vampire's heart? Damon enjoyed a strong hour.
  • I'm the guy who's been assigned to protect the human blood bag. I mean, no offense. Offense totally taken, Stefan. You better develop a solid defense now against a newly-trained Elena.
  • Take a look ahead at next week's "Ghost World" via THIS PROMO.

I think people are a little too hard on Elena. She's spent the last two seasons unable to make her own decisions because Stefan and Damon a) think they know better than her, and b) never taught her to fight back. As far back as Season One in Unpleasantville Elena talked about being able to fight back, which Stefan simply ignored, why? Surely a few self defence techniques migh help. When Elena was kidnapped at the end of Masquerade, it wasn't Trevor who took her, it was a human either hired or compelled to kidnap her, surely that should have spurred one of her boys or even Alaric to teach her. We know Elena's smart, but so far all of her plans have involved her handing herself over to Klaus, in season two or trying to get Stefan back in season three. It's only when she is faced with her most dangerous foe, not Elijah, not Klaus and not even Damon but Ripper Stefan, that she is able to make the decision to learn to fight. Not only that, but she has a vampire slayer Alaric and big bad vampire Damon to teach her, willingly. Of course, her poor old baby bro Jeremy has been pushed to the side again. As for Stefan, yeah, he may have been a good guy for a while now, but he's actually putting Elena in far more danger than he actually realises thanks to his Ripper past. So far, Elena has been threatened by both Katherine, who's her own flesh and blood if anyone's forgotten and a supposedly all powerful Original Rebekah, who's actually quite petty for an all powerful vampire. What's with the name calling in 'The Reckoning', she doesn't even know Elena. Speaking of Katherine and Elena, even if they never make peace with each other, it would be nice to see more of THEIR family history, ie, the PETROVA family history. After all its their blood that helps to bind and unbind Klaus' curse and how are they involved with the Original family. My guess is that they are possibly blood related, wouldn't that be great. I've a feeling the answer lies with a everyone's fave Original, Elijah.

@LindsyV: Holy shnikes!!!! That's gotta be the best commentary by anyone this year. Can't argue with that, you nailed it dizzam. Word.

This is how Rebekah got into the Lockwood house: This show doesn't consider becoming a vampire a true death experience, which is why TVD vampires have hearts that beat, it also explains why a person can become a vampire and still be considered the owner of a house but not be able to enter it (Logan Fell, ZOMG not a plot hole), and it shows why vampires cannot see ghosts, because they didn't truly die and go to the other side.

season 3 tad has been amazing.every episode has left mi mouth open!! and I was a stolen fan first bt Damon and elenas sexual tension and chemistry is undeniable!! And now I know Elena has real feelings for Damon bt is ashamed to show it! Because of wat it says about her.. Bt they are amazing toghather because Damon is fun exciting and edgy where elena is nice and good goody! There relation ship can be good bt not too good and not boring and interesting!! Bt over all I am loving season 3 andeverything about it!! mi favorite skull day used to be Friday now it's thursday and friday:) I love tvd:)

I agree with JB and Maxi completely. Season 3 started off infinitely better but the ghost storyline is ridiculous and has become a sideshow. I feel like it was an easy way to tie up loose/side characters. Its unsuccessful because now I care even less about them. This isnt a tween show, its successful enough that most viewers are adults and this storyline isnt cutting it. The rest of the show is stunning and mind blowing but this crap is starting to infect the main storyline. I dont usually give much thought to couples, that secondary to me but I completely agree with Maxi. Stelena will always be cute and safe but lack the ground work that is being layed for delena. Extremely telling because couples without it are never endgame. Remember this show is still very new and it doesnt help that delena has so much more chemistry. I cant blink anytime they're in the same room, stelena shippers can say what they want but the ground work indicates this will be a lasting union. Worse for stelena is that they are seriously outnumbered and their competition hasn't even been intimate yet. It shouldn't be a fair fight in favor of stelena but the audience isn't being deceived. The books were good but tv is a different beast and the power of chemistry will always win out. A non shippers take, on the stelena v delena battle.

I am a HUGE fan of the show, but Season 3 episodes have been pretty awful....this show appears to have lost its heart/direction. Now the writers just fill episodes with dead people coming back as ghosts or Bonnie casting/undoing a spell oh so conveinently. Extremely disappointing and is it just me or is the acting even getting worse? Watched this last episode with my boyfriend and I was even embarrassed at how silly it has become. Characters like Katherine are so misused, it is sad, they made SUCH a big deal out of her arrival and now its just like yeah, whatever. Instead of fully developing her story, they just keep introducing new characters. Sad!

I still see little chemistry between stelena, its impossible to not have some when he runs and saves her from falling, romantic music blaring. Im anti ship but Delena cant be denied, the chemistry is suffocating. Its sad that the person thinks stelena has more chem now, says alot about the foundation that was never layed/shown.

This is my favorite show and it keeps getting better, even got my husband hooked and that says alot, especially when hockey seasons stasting.I love all the cast except to see a crossover with Supernatural my other fav. Love you guys, stars and writers, all the cast and crew that make my thursday nights worth looking forword to since its been such a hard year.THANKS

Isn't it weird that there seems to be more chemistry between Stefan and Elena now that his emotions have been switched off?

Ford@ - I agree with you! Stefan and Elena have a great chemistry, however i dont like Elena's character. Both guys ( Stefan and Damon ) did a lot for her in teh name of love. Hopefully, she wont mislead anybody and she will end up with Stefan. I hope that Damon will meet a girl who will love him unconditionally.

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 6 Quotes

Why should I let the fact that my boyfriend was turned into a hybrid put a damper on my day?

I think you found a way to get out of bed this morning and that makes you the strongest person I know.
