The Vampire Diaries Review: Mystic Falls Apart

at . Comments

Almost every plot was thickened on The Vampire Diaries this week.

More than any episode in memory, "Disturbing Behavior" gave each vital character a chance to shine. Or connive. Or ponder her feelings for her blood-thirsty boyfriend's brother. Or temporarily murder his best friend in town because everyone was getting on his nerves.

Oh yes, Stefan is about to re-enter a Mystic Falls with a whole lot going on. Let's run it all down, shall we?

Delena Argument

In Katherine, we... trust? Is that even the proper question to be asking these days, whether or not we trust Katherine? As we debated at length in last week's Vampire Diaries Round Table, it's impossible to keep track of this Nina Dobrev-portrayed character these days. What has she been up to? Why was in Chicago? What plot is she hatching this time around? Will it come together in a more sensible manner than her season two storyline?

There's still a fear that Katherine is being used more as a plot device than anything - appearing when convenient to shake things up and move characters around - but now that she's an integral part of ongoing arcs again? I'll believe, Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. You must have a coherent plan in mind. Don't let me down.

I'm just a girl, looking for a partner in crime. Katherine, dear, you are so much more than that.

Crossing a Caro-line. First off, how freaking awesome has Caroline become?!? Painted as little more than a bubbly blonde when human, her confidence and swagger has grown every week as a blood sucker. She's still super sweet (see scenes with Tyler, and then worry about what might happen if these two have a baby...), but she can also get angry and, forget The Hulk, you do not want to see Caroline when she's angry.

Damon discovered that fact this week via a scene that still has me cheering. What fun it was to see Caroline go after this Salvatore, partly due to her reasoning: yes, Bill Forbes tortured his daughter - but she's still his daughter. There's still love there. She still bought him that expensive shirt. Bravo to The Vampire Diaries for creating a complicated, layered relationship between parent and sibling here, although I must disagree with Bill's final assessment: Caroline and her new attitude will be just fine.

Bil Forbes

Poor Anna. That's almost all I have to say about this storyline. It was heartbreaking to watch her cry and utter about how she's "all alone" when Jeremy told Bonnie about his little ghosts-of-ex-girlfriends-past problem. Still, I doubt forcing me to admit that I teared up over a dead vampire is the sole purpose for this development.

Anna feels a "darkness" when Vicki is around? And when Bonnie tried to summon a necklace-related spell? What the...?!? I typically enjoy trying to make predictions, but I'm at a loss on this one. I can't imagine what ghost Vicki is up to. Guess I'll be forced to keep tuning in every week to find out. Oh well. That's a tad bit less painful than what Gloria did to Stefan. Speaking of which...

Silly Stefan. He may wanna leave all future scheming up to the other Salvatore sibling. Stefan was a bit too trusting of Gloria and Rebekah here, not taking enough time to feel them out and see if he really could hint that he isn't on board with Klaus' master plan. Granted, Elena was in trouble and it's hard to think rationally when trying to save your one true love, which was another development from the episode:

Yes, that would be Elena, not Rebekah. Stefan's memory is intact and he is still putting Elena above all else. Romantic? Absolutely. Dangerous to both? Clearly. Impressive, considering how Claire Holt looked in this dress? Yes, very.

Councilman Alaric. I love it as much as I still hate how everyone has shortened his name to "Ric." The guy has a ready-made tagline already if he ever needs to campaign (A Man for the People. Literally!) and a perfectly understandable reason for joining the Council: his girlfriend was killed by a vampire, his wife was obsessed by vampires, his BFF of a vampire has a tendency to briefly murder him... can you blame Alaric for realizing that someone in Mystic Falls has to look out for its actual citizens?

Those citizens will be in even more danger next week, although the official preview for "The Reckoning" makes it clear that only one of them will truly be threatened by Klaus and Stefan.

All around, a fantastic episode of The Vampire Diaries that included almost every character and left me with just four questions:

  1. Where the heck was Matt while everything was happening? Must have been a busy day at The Grill.
  2. Why doesn't Klaus just compel Stefan in order to learn his true intentions?
  3. What kind of boring name is Michael for a vampire hunter than even leaves Klaus quaking?
  4. Bill must be the first person to ever refer to Damon's technique as "lazy," right? I don't recall any women complaining.

this episode went too out insane from beginning to end. I probably predict that there will be more insane and surprising events coming up. =O

why are people saying that damon's house is elena's? I don't get that. when did that happen? and yeah, why can Katherine enter that house if it's elena's and she hasn't been invited in??

LOVE TVD. Are people mad at Stefan for killing Andy? Damon manipulated and brainwashed Andy, do you call that a girlfriend he truly cared for? Also: Stefan was in a terrible state when he did kill her. This is JUST a tv show; you need to develop a sense of tolerance for things that are not okay in real life (for example: murder in the show is not as a big deal in the show, whereas in real life murder is one of the worst things you can do). Besides, Stefan was protecting Elena when he killed Andy: he needed the message "stay away" to get through: but as we all know it didn't. I like Stefan with Klaus. He's interesting and more relatable. I wonder how his relationship with Rebekah will play out, with Elena and all. Why doesn't Klaus compel Stefan for answers? I never got that either I really like the ghost storyline! I find it eerie. I hope they continue and develop it more. I think Anna might be the evil one. How Bonnie plays out in all of this? I don't care. I dislike Bonnie, not because she's a vampire traitor, mostly because I just don't find her THAT interesting. Maybe she will be later on in the season? I really like that Damon's bad again! He can't be changed, and just because Stefan's gone doesn't mean he has to fill his shoes as the good guy. But then again, in the season 1 finale he said there were too many good guys already. Now's your chance, Damon! But about him going on a trip with Katherine. Elena better go! Not because I want to see Delena (which... I admit I do), or because Damon could have a threesome with two identical girls (wait they're related- scratch that). It's because Elena will be so BORING back home with no vampire guy to entertain her. Matt, you're up! Anyways, I have always loved this show and will probably continue to, but I'm excited to see where the series is going.

Ohohohoho! I'm a little late with this week's ep have guests and not having time to watch! But I

y r u guys trying to put all d blame on stefan and make him look like the bad boy,why r u saying dat he's the bad guy and pretending to be gud just to impress elena, stef was already a better person even before he met elena and i dnt tink he's pretending,hw can a bad boy spent over 100yrz pretending to be gud and fighting against his nature, and hw can a gud guy spent 100yrz pretending to be bad just to get his love back, its nt possible, all d ppl dat damon killed, wat does dat have to do with katherine,i believe all of them are bad,its in there nature, but stefan is better than damon in al aspect, damon can never be as gud as stef and at d same time he can never be as evil as stef,bt damon's evilness is much worse compared to that of stefan's,at least stefan feels remorse and guilty anytime he killed someone,bt wat abt damon,i knw it's very annoying, damon has changed,bt no one can see thru it,nd stefan too has changed,bt why has he changed,y is he in d situation he's right nw?Isn't coz of damon.

welll urmm no stefen is not an a**h***..wait delena fans make it sound as if damon is a pure soul..well hello remeber him killing lexi who happened to be stefen's best friend..and for what to get katherine thats pure selfish...what stefen didi to andie was to keep damon (yes the guy who killed his best fren) safe..and hello so how come its stefen's fault if he is loved by katherine more...its not like stefen had anything to do in that..he is incredibly adorable...and the main thing damon is alive only because of stefen..i love damon i really do but when i see those extremely stupid comments against stefen i just wish that stefen would not have saved least those stupid people would shut up :)

@ ps in seattle vampires can make babies with werewolves coz that happened w/ klaus didnt it
this was awesum luved it

What the hell-o is going on here?! Gloria torturing Stefan was just really disturbing to watch. Elena admitting her feelings towards Damon was good, (now we got that covered for sure). Caroline saving her father from Damon and then getting told she's never going to be ok was just annoying from her father. (I really thought he was kind of slowly over the fact that Caroline is a vampire and more grateful because she saved his life -- da-ah..) I love Stefan even though he told Elena that he didn't want to see her anymore in the last episode, you got to see that he still loved her very much, (not that I thought he didn't love her, but you know). Damon snapping again for a very long time was bad and also good. People need to learn that they can't change him, not even Elena. That Katherine first warned Stefan, then saving Stefan, suddenly in Mystic Falls pretends to be Elena at the cafè with Bonnie and then pay Damon a little visit, (when she first dissapeared from Bonnie I though maybe Bonnie was seeing ghosts or something, but then it turned out to be Katherine. Good thing actually because it's enough having Jeremy seeing ghosts.) was just not mind blowing, but shocking. The thing was when Rebekah knew that Stefan was lying instead of Klaus just compel Stefan to tell the truth he took him back to Mystic Falls. Why not compell him Klaus? It would have been the easiest way, but I'm much more happier and excited that they went back to Mystic Falls. (Not so happy about the severe consequenses that will happen, but just happy in general that this show will now get that action and spunk like it always had in the last seasons, but now seems to miss). It's just so, so, so bad that Katherine showed up at Mystic Falls.. Because now it seems that she and Damon is going on a little road trip and who's going to be there to protect Elena? I know Bonnie will be there, Caroline is a vampire, Tyler is a werewolf and Alaric will do the best he can with his human power, but I feel that Damon knows Klaus more in that kind of special way, and Stefan needs to be on his best behaviour now. And on the Jeremy/Anna/Vickie/Bonnie side, it's actually boring. A bit spookie with these Vickie and darkness stuff, but nothing more.. Can't wait till next episode!

I agree completely with what karina de los said! Wow and might I add were not in the minority at all ;)
