Gossip Girl Round Table: Season Five Premiere

at . Comments

Welcome to the first TV Fanatic Gossip Girl Round Table of the season! Below, our panel breaks down the previous night's episode (see our review from earlier this morning) from all angles.

Below, TVF shot-caller Eric Hochberger (a.k.a. Gossip Guy) and editor Steve Marsi (Mister Meester) are joined by staff writers Courtney Morrison, Christina Tran and Leigh Raines to discuss "Yes, Then Zero."

Weigh in with your take on the following topics after reading ours!

What was your favorite quote from the episode?

Courtney: "People like me don't write books, they're written about." Absolute perfection by Chuck Bass.

Christina: Chuck: "Serena, you accepted responsibility without hesitation for maybe the first time in your life. And Nate, you had more fun not being you than you've ever had actually being you. Which means you now know you need to change." Dead on. Finally, a bit of realism on Gossip Girl.

Leigh: Marshall to Chuck: "Who are you?" Serena and Nate: "He's Chuck Bass." Had to go with the classic on this one.

Steve: Courtney and Eric's choice was clearly the best, but to mix it up, I'll go with Nate's musings on weed and life. I love being reminded of what a stoner he is at heart.

Eric: "People like me don't write books, they're written about." Glad the "yes man" Chuck is still a cocky bastard.

What did you like and dislike most about the premiere?

Courtney: I liked that everyone seemed to be having fun again, a back to basics premiere showing why we all fell in love with this show in the first place. Blair was on her game, Serena looked pretty, Chuck was being hot... felt like old times. I am loving the Blair pregnancy storyline... hopefully they don't bail out of it in some way. There wasn't much I disliked... I don't see the need for Charlie/Ivy to come back and I am not so sold on the adult stories playing a huge part (looking at you, Elizabeth Hurley). Hopefully her arc works out better than Russell Thorpe's last season.

Christina: Sometimes a change of scenery can be nice. LA served as a great spot for Chuck, Nate and Serena to have a simpler than usual summer. I disliked that Blair seemed more whiny and irritating than usual.

Leigh: I loved seeing Nate, Serena, and Chuck hanging out and having some good old-fashioned fun. Unfortunately I still really dislike the Louis storyline. Blair is not her usual snarky, wonderful self around him.

Steve: I only had minor complaints, such as Marshall's lame plot to oust Serena and too much of Louis' mom. Other than that, it was a fun episode with a lot of heart and a major twist. Vintage Gossip Girl.

Eric: I loved the light-hearted feeling of the LA scenes. I disliked Chace Craword's terrible acting. Maybe it was because I haven't seen the show in months, but was he always this terrible and I was just distracted by his beauty?

Prince Louis: Boring and naive, or devoted and principled?

Courtney: Boring and naive. I want to like him, I really do. But I find myself hardly listening when he talks. He may be the sweetest guy, and he is even a prince... but that still holds no competition against Chuck Bass or even Dan Humphrey. Time for the Prince and his bossy mother to go.

Christina: How about utterly boring and naive? Prince Louis didn’t once question Dan why he would write a story about HIS fiancé.

Leigh: See above. Snoozefest.

Steve: Christina makes a great point above - On the heels of her liaison with Chuck last season, too. The fact that we're debating between THREE guys as the father of Baby Waldorf proves Louis' naivete.

Eric: Are we comparing him to the yacht-owning, building-jumping, motorcycle-riding Chuck? Then obviously boring and naive. But if we're comparing him to other princes, he's as exciting as Blair could ask for and seems ridiculously devoted to her. Shut up and take your fairytale ending, even if it is Monaco. Not everyone can be Kate Middleton and land England.

Nathaniel in L.A.

Hardest to believe: Serena showing actual work ethic, Dan's book getting published immediately and anonymously, or Nate having a moment of self-reflection?

Courtney: This is such a difficult choice because they are all so hard to believe! I'm going to take Serena showing actual work ethic because Dan has been published before and Nate is old enough he should be able to do some self-reflection. There's no way the UES princess would be that devoted to getting coffee.

Christina: Serena and work ethic just don’t belong in the same sentence. I’m so used to seeing Serena as the damsel in distress or chasing boys that it’s hard to believe she’d actually succumb to the working world.

Leigh: Nate doing anything besides attracting cougars.

Steve: Dan has an awfully easy time getting published by elite magazines, but at least that's been consistent from the show's inception. Ditto for Nate being a bit of a lost soul. Serena showing real ambition, not motivated by her love interest du jour? Or deterred by setbacks? Now that caught me off guard.

Eric: First off, I just finished reading The Help, and let me tell you, they love publishing anonymous books and those things catch like wildfire. That check will be first of many. Just watch out for those tempting chocolate cakes. Now, let's be honest, Nate having a moment of any kind of thinking, even if it is marijuana-induced, is beyond comprehensible. Can we please just get him to sit in the corner and stop talking?

Did you miss Jenny, Eric and Vanessa?

Courtney: Honestly... no. Jenny and Eric had been so MIA over the past season, I hardly noticed they were gone. The only reason I noticed Vanessa wasn't around was because no one was wearing any ridiculous outfits. These three haven't had a really good story since the beginning of the series, if at all (Vanessa...). No loss coming from me.

Christina: How about none of the above? Jenny always ruined everything, Eric is kind of boring, and I’m sure I don’t need to explain my reasoning for Vanessa.

Leigh: I don't really miss any of them. If I had to pick, I'd say Eric, but I like Connor Paolo over at Revenge.

Steve: Jenny always stirred up drama. Eric was (usually) the show's moral compass. Both played key roles, felt like family and will be missed. As for she-who-must-not-be-named, my colleague will handle that:

J: I think she just went a little heavy on the eye shadow and disappeared into the shadows. Not convinced she's gone.
E: Of course! But I know he's just on vacation in the Hamptons. Luckily we can still catch his adventures out there on Revenge. Not sure why they changed his name though. It's confusing.

Who is the father of Blair's baby?!

Courtney: Tough call. It can't be the Prince because that would just make to much sense since they are going to be getting married and all. Of course who wouldn't want it to be Chuck? Daddy Bass would be extremely hot. But I'm going with Humphrey. I'm thinking some things went on between these two that we haven't learned about yet. And hey, he probably is the most suited considering his short lived daddy to Georgina's kid.

Christina: I'm going with Chuck because I still believe in happy endings - even for our Upper Eastsiders.

Leigh: I'm gonna go with Chuck on this one. She took the pregnancy test before Monaco, and there was mention of how she and Louis spent all summer in bed. I think she knows it's Chuck's and had tons of sex with Louis to try and pass it off as his.

Steve: Dan, if only because that revelation would be the ultimate OMFG moment.

Eric: Dan. That guy is so potent even his kiss can impregnate a woman. Just ask G.

this round table is just a big 'lets kiss Chuck's ass' fest
used to love reading it in the past....

Okay, so correct me if I'm wrong but the timing of her pregnancy is a bit off.
Blair left for Monaco for six weeks, just after she took the test. Two weeks before that was Chuck, and however many weeks before was Dan. Now, in between those times, Louis has been the constant bedcover over our favorite Waldorf, so why does it have to be such a mystery?
The tailor said around 6 weeks along, so even if Blair was pregnant to Chuck - or even Dan! - she would be a lot closer to 8-10 weeks along...
Personally, I'd love it to be Chucks and have this happily ever after, but Occam's Razor suggests otherwise.

plss.... let it be chuck as a father of blair's child... it would be soo good to see chuck as a daddy-O.... and bore a child to the love of his life... pls, don't ruin a very very good love story...
what they say is true...

1. Anything from Wise Chuck was my favorite!
2. Likes: Wise/Happy/Motorcycle Chuck, the yacht in LA. Dislikes: Whiney Blair & Limp Louis (really, if he can't take his fiance/wife's side against his mother, there is no hope for this relationship), the return of Charl-Ivy, Blair never playing the 'Charlene didn't do it that way' card during the wedding planning session with her future MIL (Charlene didn't wear the granmother's dress, Charlene didn't carry carnations, Charlene wasn't in French Vogue, etc).
3. Louis = SO boring & naive! Didn't he wonder why Dan wrote a book about Blair or what it might contain? If one chapter in a magazine is worth killing, wouldn't the whole novel be worth more?
4. Serena having a work ethic is totally unbelievable, almost as much as her wanting people to like her (or was that believe in her?).
5. Miss you Eric! Not that you were around very much, but it was nice when you hung out with Dan. The guy is in desperate need of real friends!
6. Okay, so the producers told us that pregnancy storyline was going to be "shocking", and we all figured that the only really shocking thing would be for Blair to be pregnant with Chuck's baby. And then we find out Blair is pregnant so we're not really shocked because we saw this coming. The only possible "shocking" moment of this would be if it were Dan's baby. We know B&C hooked up. We know B slept with L all summer so that when she tells him she's preggo he'll think it's his. Could B&D getting it on be the mystery ending that Dan alluded to to Rufus? One can only hope!

Baby better be Dan's. Why do you think Blair went to Dan, besides the reasons she stated, and the fact she wanted HIM to whisk her away to the hamptons. DAN DAN DAN! WRITES HAVE IT BE DAN. Plus talk about DRAMA between S, B, and D. Plus, they said Dan and S will have something together this season. She probably finds out before anyone and is trying to win Dan back before everything happens with b.

this is the first time I had to skim the roundtable Whoever wrote the stuff above need to be fired. It was real snoozefest with no originality whatsover

I rewatched the episode and sorry, that wasn't Vanessa Williams, that was Michael Michele of E.R., I noticed she was familiar but I confused her with Vanessa Williams, I apologize I don't know how it happened. Also, the Dair scene, the whole Blair calling off Dan, she didn't mentioned the word farytale, still I guess it was implicit? Anyways I needed to clear that out, next time I will rewatch the episode first.

I don't like the LA scenes. It suddenly seemed like every other teenage drama that is or has been on tv. Well most. I like Gossip Girl being based and filmed in NY. That's what makes these characters and the show different from the other ones.
I don't like Nate having serious storylines. I'm quite content with him being a background character, a friend to Chuck and showing up every once in a while looking pretty. Anything more than that is too much.
I love the pregnancy storyline. I think that's great! I really hope she winds up having the baby. And it is either Louis or Chucks. Of course I'm hoping for Chuck. I'd love it if it were Dan's too but as far as I know, they have never had sex.
I'm not in love with stuntman Chuck. I k now he's supposed to be causing physical pain to himself to escape his mental pains but it'd be nice to actually see him pine for Blair the way she's done to him in the past. I also hope something does happen again with Blair and Dan but I imagine she being pregnant with another man's baby would put the gabosh on that.

I thought with absolutely no Chair interactions, I would not like the season premiere so much, but I actually like it a lot.
First off Nate, Serena and Chuck together in California were awesome!!! They were really funny. I like when Chuck was bonding with Nate and Serena when they lay on the chairs. He is so much lighter and snarkier and sexier than ever. Best quote of the night definitely goes to Chuck: “People like me don’t write books, we get written about or something like that. That is so him. Chuck Bass is Back. He is like the scene stealer in this episode because I almost fainted when he pulled up on his motorcycle and pulled off his helmet. I hope the end was the most we will ever see of Chuck shirtless. I know he’s not the most fit but I would like it if he did work out some more so we can see him without a shirt for once before the show is over for good. The limo scene in season 1 was epic but what would be more epic at this point is him without a shirt.
Nate can’t find himself? I thought that was his problem in junior year? Why is he going through like these midlife crisis so many times before he is even 25?
So Serena is staying in California to help with the movie but I want to know since when was that her dream. That guy may have been a d*** to get her into trouble but at least we know his situation. This girl really does just want everything.
Okay what is in that chapter/book/memoir/whatever the hell Dan wrote about? Is the book like completely about Blair? Umm that’s One Tree Hill- much don’t you think? I hope he didn’t write like a whole book about her. Because this storyline would feel really force if he did. They became friends like in the second half of season 4 so there can’t be a lot of stuff for him to write about with her. Sometimes I think Gossip Girl is too subtle because Louis was the one whole stopped the chapter from publishing, so I’m sure he read it, which is why I’m surprise that he did not punch Dan in the face or something in the end for 1.) writing about his love for his fiancé and 2.) went along with Blair who was able to break off the engagement. His hair is really bothering me. Are those bangs, are they not? What’s the deal?
I really like Blair and Louis together (for now of course). He is really to her. But his explanation for why he keeps agreeing with his mom is so dumb. If she gets her way now, clearly she will not stop or minimize her demands in the future. I thought it was comical that his idea of standing up to his mother is letting Blair hold the flowers she wanted instead of wearing the gown she wants. Like flowers? That’s it?
And on to Blair. She was great in the episode as always. She was lighter, snarkier and just downright awesome. I love her hair like this. I found it hard to believe that Blair would decide to break off the engagement to Louis without letting him explain his absent and telling Dan about it. She hasn’t seen him all summer and all of a sudden he’s her new best friend?? No way.
This is why I love Gossip Girl. They always manage to expose a make a cliffhanger in the most unexpected ways. I really hope Blair was the one who was pregnant (with Chuck’s baby), so when I saw it was Dorota who is, I was disappointed because that’s a waste of a good storyline. However, the ending completely took me by surprise in suggesting that Blair is or could also be pregnant too, but it was just Dorota’s test we saw in the finale. This unfolding was genius!!!!!! For some reason the premiere had a very good feel to it. It seems like the season will be a good one for real. I really hope Blair is pregnant and it is with Chuck’s baby. Chair all the way. There is no doubt that they are endgame. Dair sucks. Dan sucks. He needs to go far away like Vanessa did. Chuck and Blair forever.

@Leah: YES! Round Table has lost its mojo! Not as witty and hilarious as previous Round Tables... :( Come on guys... you can do better! Also, it was a great Chuck episode and I like seeing Serena actually working. Wow. Very interested to see where Blair's storyline will go... I'm predicting she'll call off the wedding. The guy playing the Prince has the WORST acting skills. Much worse than Nate!

Gossip Girl Season 5 Episode 1 Quotes

Dan: It's Blair's Save the Date.
Rufus: You're not happy. You guys are still friends, right?
Dan: Yeah. Friends. I wonder if she invited Chuck.
Rufus: If he's anywhere that FedEx can reach.

Dan: Dad! What are you doing here? I thought you'd still be in London helping Jenny set up St. Martin's.
Rufus: She and Eric kicked me out when I didn't know who Sierra Burton was, so I came back here early and thought I'd spend some time with you.
