Start planning your going away party, Grey's Anatomy viewers: Patrick Dempsey will exit the show after next season.

With just one year remaining on his contract, the actor made his intentions clear in an interview with the latest issue of Italian Vanity Fair. He told the magazine:

“It’s gonna be my last. I do not know what’s going to happen to the other characters, but for me it’s done," adding that the decision is “bittersweet because it’s been great and a great part of my life. But I can’t see me doing it anymore.”

Shonda Rimes has been preparing to bid farewell to both Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo after season eight, though the latter is yet to give official notification.

At least the creator now has time to plan our an official goodbye for Derek. What do you think? Does this guarantee Meredith leaves with him? Sound off now and react to Dempsey's announcement...

This show was AWESOME in the we have alot of outsiders who do not do much for the show except take over the best positions...Patrick may you enjoy life after Gray's because alot of people will miss you and Ellen !!!! if she goes with you (wouldn't have it any other way) Do not make Christina kill her baby, even if it is with Owen !!! End it with DIGNITY>...........

He should not leave. He and Meredith together are about 90% of the show.

I understand, I find myself not watching Grey's anymore. This was before Patrick' announcement.I just find the last couple of shows to be not as interesting. Just not the same as when George and Izzy were on there. I dont know what has changed with the writing, but it has.

everyone is saying they won't watch the show without derek, but seriously. you guys did it for season 7! he literally had one scene in every episode with very minimal dialogue. he wasn't very instrumental in any major storyline this season. this is what shonda does. like with george, he had a main storyline season 1-4, then season five even though he was credited as a main character he was completely useless and had virtually no screen-time. ugh this show really sucks now.

The show should just end. I hope he changes his mind.

As much as I hate to say this, if PD and EP leave the show should end. Regardless of what else is being said, MerDer was the focal point of the show and should end as such. Spin off the other characters into another show if we must, I just want a MerDer happy ending, with Zola and a McBaby in the oven.

Im love little Grey (Lexie) and her romance issues! I'd rather watch them lately. Watching Derek is nice for a pretty face, but a tedious character lately.

THIS FRICKING SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No! Damn! I know he and Ellen did say their contract ends at the end of the 8th season. But I was hoping that's not true. This just reminded me of George Clooney's character in ER. He did the show, it got him other jobs so he left and they made his character disappear off in the suburbs. But come on, there is no Grey in Grey's Anatomy without MerDer. I like Lexie but I don't think she can be the Grey in Grey's. I hope Shonda will realize that there is no Grey's without MerDer. And end the show at season 8. End it before it sucks. Just like they did with Sex and the City. I'll miss MerDer if the show continues without them.

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."
