Gossip Girl Season Finale Review: Happily Never After

at . Comments

What a tease.

After Chuck rescued Blair, she let go of their inhibitions and they both had some old-fashioned fun (followed by sex!), it looked like this was it. Chair together for good.

It took her engagement to adequate but uninspiring Louis to bring this about, but here they were. Emotionally bonded and passionately enmeshed forever, come what may.

Until Chuck had a last-minute change of heart and let her go in "The Wrong Goodbye." In his heart of hearts, he seemed to know it was the right decision. But it still hurt.

Big Chair Scene

Perhaps they're not meant to be together after all. Maybe the fire that makes Chair so electric on screen also destroys both. For Chuck, he loved Blair too much to risk it.

When Chuck pulled an about-face and gave Louis his blessing, Blair appeared resigned to the same belief - that she needed to profess her love for Chuck, then move on.

Disappointing as this was for Chair fans, it was relatively well done. My only caveat will be if Chuck reverts to his old ways and meddles in their relationship next season.

If he's going to mature and let her go, he has to really let her go.

Do you think Blair and Louis will have their happily ever after? Or will the relationship and life as a princess lose its luster, ultimately leading B back to her Dark Knight?

At this point, it's hard to want Blair and Louis to fail. The way Chuck and Blair ended things Monday night gave them both closure. Maybe now they can finally move on.

The fate of Chuck and Blair (and Louis and Blair) is something we will debate all summer long and potentially beyond, and I'm dying to hear what you all think about it.

As for the rest of the fourth season finale ... wow. That was a lot thrown at us, yet relatively little at the same time. Story arcs wrapped quickly, then new ones began.

When we left her last week, Charlie stopped taking her mystery meds. At the start of the finale, Dan is trying to find her, while Chuck is alarmed and looking for Blair.

B is trapped atop Charles Place with Russell Thorpe, who appears to be trying to set the whole place on fire via some gas leak. They sell gasoline too, man. Just saying.

Then be still my heart, Michelle Trachtenberg graces the screen as Georgina.

OM-G is Back

I have to say, Michelle had some of the show's funniest dialogue in a long time. She and Jack Bass have really made the last two weeks for me. It was great to have her back.

Why was Georgina even there? Presumably because of the alumni event? Did she even go to Constance? All unclear, but she's so shady and hilarious it could not matter less.

Watching her subtly reference her antics while clamoring to be a part of the scheme was so funny, I couldn't wait to see what happened next (not always the case this season).

What she does next is direct reeling Charlie to the nearest open window. Nice, G!

Up on the roof, Blair clandestinely calls Chuck from her pocket (he's still #1 on speed dial!!!!!) to reveal her location and the gang busts Russell in approximately 15 seconds.

Chuck and Blair decide to get a drink to calm her nerves before he delivers her to Louis, but they wind up getting it on at a Bar Mitzvah. Don't even ask. But it was awesome.

With Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" echoing in the background, Chuck and Blair pretended to be Jewish, then stopped pretending they don't belong in each other's arms naked.

This isn't just love, it's complicated, intense, all-consuming magnetism. Maybe it can't sustain itself long-term, but if nothing else, they gave us one heck of a last hurrah.

Meanwhile, Serena finds Charlie about to plunge to her doom. Charlie says every girl wants to be Serena and every guy wants to date her. This triggers something in S.

She decides she's really letting herself down by not making her own choices and decides (with a little help from the headmistress) to do something for herself this summer.

Charlie is fine all of a sudden, and Georgina, who had to have a reason for hanging around besides making me laugh, either knows or is suspicious she wasn’t ever on meds.

G was right. Turns out that Charlie is really a girl named Ivy and was being paid by Carol to ensure the Van Der Woodsens wouldn’t come after her ever again. Okay then.

The plot holes here are too numerous to count, so let's just hold off until next fall. Kaylee Defer is a cast member now, and "Ivy" has G's number. Let the crazies unite!

Finally, Vanessa finds Dan’s manuscript and calls him a sellout for not publishing it. He calls her a bad friend. She steals the book and has it published, anonymously.

"Where do I send the checks," asks an editor. Because it's that easy to get a book published. Oye. We love Dan, but wow, this is some bad writing. The show's, not his.

Then again, Vanessa did leave for Spain, so this plot line was a net positive.

Interesting Serena Scene

Fast forward three weeks and story arcs are being tied up left and right. Blair is headed to Monaco to get married, and she’s still being friendly with Dan and with Chuck.

Charlie returns to Florida but longs for NYC. Eric is going off to college, but first, to the Hamptons with Dan. Chuck and Nate are embarking on an epic global adventure.

Serena heads to California to do nothing on the beach. She needs to be alone in Malibu, only to get a job in the movies when a famous director happens to walk past her.

Oh, and there's a positive pregnancy test in the trash Dorota removes as we fade to black! Could be Blair carrying the baby of Louis ... or Chuck?! Is it even B's test?

Quite the cliffhanger to leave us with after a finale that was already pretty darn entertaining. The show went out on a high note and next season could be even better.

Who do you think the pregnancy test belongs to, and what developments are you most looking forward to next fall? Did you like the Gossip Girl season finale overall?

Did Chuck make the right decision? Is it really over for Chair? Was the season as a whole disappointing, or did it redeem itself by the end? So much to discuss. Go to it!

First, a quick poll: Did Chuck make the right decision letting Blair go?

@EmmieLee I hope you're right, i really want Nate to have an intereting storyline in the next season...hes been to quiet for my liking in this season. A hidden pregnancy would be great. Nate could be there for her, be her friend, without actually knowing the baby i his. I wont him and S together, but like they were leading up to in seaon 1 and the end of season 3, a proper romance...not just like WAM BAM we're together and now its jut sex, sex, sex. At the same time though i want the baby to be Blairs because i will never give up on chair. Throughout GG they have been my fav couple and will continue to be :)

Loved the season finale! Great cliffhangers that promise lots of drama next season. And yes, it felt so much like the Wrong Good-bye. Ah writers! When will you stop teasing the fans and finally let Chair become the power couple they'll eventually become. Loved that Chuck showed amazing growth and hope it sticks.

ok. i cant stop thinking about how crazy this episode was so i just hafta get it off my chest season 4 finale = epic. Chuck and Blair scenes were absolutely beautiful. they were understandable because they both know that there's this crazy love between them but its so mature and responsible the fact that they decided they cant be together right now. As a Chair fan, i was sad, but i knew it was the right decision. I even shed a tear when Blair said "i will always love you". they say it in shows all the time and its meaningless but it is so true here. I'm so proud of Chuck that he had the decency to let her go knowing that he had alot to sort thru with himself, which let's face it, with the way he's been acting, he's right. but the fact that three weeks later he still wasn't drowning his sorrows with women and alcohol. thumbs up Chuck. After this, my heart hurt a little but then you know, Blair's deserves a Louis. She deserves a fairytale wedding. and i say "wedding" because i'm pretty sure that's how long i think it will last. all these theories about the pregnancy test? please. Blair has sex with Chuck, three weeks later pregnancy test. Hello? who else has had sex like that. Maybe it is Dorota's but, I feel like its been done before and lets face it, in order for Blair not to be with Louis forever (he's a guest star!), something crazy needs to happen. Like a baby. Hello? It's Chuck's. i don't understand how it could be Dan because I'm pretty sure they only kissed twice. Blair and Louis are never shown sleeping together, right? It's kind of weird that Blair would leave with Louis when she got a positive test, but maybe she thinks its his and they did within that three week span, maybe right after Chuck. Also, there has to be more to this glimpse of Dair, i just know it. I feel like it will ultimately be between Dan and Chuck for Blair. Kind of similar to Ross and Joey for Rachel (and in this comparison Eddie=the prince). Or Pacey and Dawson for Joey. Rachel chose the soul mate, but Joey didn't. All this talk about "endgame" is totally up in the air. Who knows what the writers will come up with next. If it is Blair's baby, I'm excited to see Dan want help Blair out because he knows alll about kids and babies now haha. On that note! Georgina, I LOVE it. I totally knew she would be bored with a baby and i think its hilarious she found some rich guy to marry. "i've never been this bored since i believed in Jesus" HAHA. And "Charlie". ok, so first things first, i never really liked the whole Charlie storyline i thought it was annoying. i saw through the whole thing: Charlie's new, she's going to scheme then she's going to go crazy and then leave boohoo. and honestly? her acting was predictable i totally knew what she was going to say before she said it. her character was so blah they threw her in for more depth whatever. but then she got that phone call and my interest went up x1000. WHO THE HELL IS IVY!? and with the news that she's a new regular, shes def gna stir up some stuff. all i know, is that I was fooled, this was a crazzyy master plan all "charlie" went thru just to get all that money. think about it, she manipulated Serena, Dan, Eric, Lily, Rufus, and even me. Georgina, teach her some new tricks. Ivy. is. Crazy

probably eleanor's baby.

@aimeeee i cant remember if it was the last episode or not but in one charlie/ivy got a text saying her trust fund had ben activated. Well in the last scene with her and carol she opens the box which is a box of blank checks with charlottes"charlie's" name on them. so its all about money. And i don't know if anyone else noticed but when "charlie" took out the napkin with georginas number on it, you could see a couple of blank checks she kept for herself in the bottom of the purse. Crazy!

Right after watching the show last night, I was a bit heartbroken. Yes, I want Blair to be happy. But Chair is the reason I watch the show. I've been hooked since they hooked up in the limo four years ago. Blair does seem happy with Louis. But then it occurred to me that Chair is the end game because like Blair said, their love is complicated. They were happy together most of the third season. It's only when they get caught up in their own issues that everything fails. But what was great about this episode is seeing them conquer their issues. Blair wants to be happy. Chuck matured enough to let her go so she can be happy. But this is all part of their bigger journey. That pregnancy test was definitely B's and the father is definitely Chuck. How else are the writers going to bring Chuck and Blair back together? Ultimately, Chuck and Blair will mature enough to be happy as a couple.

Holy fishpaste I cried like a river because I'm a major CHAIR fan. I don't believe CHAIR will be over for good. It's a Bass Baby!! Can anyone research on pregnancy stuff? HAHA

Okay best season finale ever. Like it was epic. Eric, Kati, and Iz scene was so FUNNY. "Ooh you got cute." "I'm still gay." When Chuck let Blair go I cried. I know they'll get back together. They have to, but it was so sad. Charlie and Georgina= same episode. I guess you can fight Crazy with Crazy. Georgina was amazing as usual. "I haven't been this bored since I believed in Jesus. That was hilarious. I missed Jack Bass. Where was he? Wasn't he just in the last episode which took place on the same night! Nate actually had a storyline this week well sort of. And Dan was pretty useless so was Vanessa. Speak of the devil, she's gone to SPAIN! Yay! Good riddance V. Louis' mom bothers me. I don't trust her. Okay and biggest cliffhanger of all: Who's pregnant? Blair makes the most since, but this is Gossip Girl and nothing is what it seems. I loved the new love interest for Serena. He was great. And since when does or can Serena read?

CHAIR is the most overrated couple ever. THey are NOT good together. I hope this means the end of them for good. I so much like Blair better without Chuck.

@EmmieLee The idea that the baby could be Serena's is interesting, and definitely plausible. She did make that comment about not having enough time to find a dress that "outshines" Blair's - or should she say that she doesn't have enough time to find one that'll mask her baby bump?! The only problem with it being Serena's though is that whose would it be? I think it'll be Blair's - to my knowledge, they're not bringing Louis back on as a series regular, so the writers would have to find some way to get rid of him. And while the baby may not be Chuck's, she'd still have to tell Louis about the affair. Either way, I really don't see Blair sticking with the Prince.

Gossip Girl Season 4 Episode 22 Quotes

Chuck: You really love him, don't you?
Blair: Yes. But not like I love you. Louis and I, it's different. It's lighter, more simple. He makes me happy.
Chuck: And I don't?
Blair: What we have is a great love. It's complicated. Intense. All-consuming. No matter what we do and how much we fight, it'll always pull us in. What's mere happiness in the face of all that, right?

Chuck: There's a difference between a great love and the right love. I left the Empire State Building last year after two minutes when you didn't show. Louis waited all night. This is your chance at happiness. You think you shouldn't want it 'cause you've never had it and it scares you. But you deserve your fairytale.
Blair: We make our own fairytales.
Chuck: Only when we have to.
